The Puppetman (2023)
Moves way too slow for the story it's telling.
It's a bit of a meh movie. The pacing was just way too off in my opinion. The main character had this weird intensity to her sleepwalking and birds, yet no emotion attached to her childhood and fostered upbringing so was really hard to get on her side.
Plus the fact that all 3 female lead characters (out of 5 = 3F + 2M) had androgynous names felt forced: Michal (pronounced Michael), Charlie and Jo. Not only does it create confusion at the start when they're referring to people that aren't in the room, it feels like pandering whilst trying to teach us a lesson on gender norms. It takes you completely out of the movie and it was the first thing others said when I was asking what they though of the movie. We get it, names are not gender specific! Problem is an 90min movie is not life and not a book, so it doesn't work well having all your female characters named that way.
Hypnotic (2023)
Weird to bad to good to ok!
Way too far fetched at the beginning but really picked up towards the mid to end. Then, they ruin the whole thing at the end by explaining it all. I get some explaining helps, but as usual it feels like a pandered explanation for the dumb people in the US. Totally ruins any credibility the movie can claim.
It seems Hollywood either doesn't trust that their viewers can add 2 and 2 together, or know their audience is dumb.
Aside from that Ben Affleck does pretty well in this. I do agree with a previous reviewer that this feels like a Nicholas Cage movie. It does leave a lot of questions unanswered, but nothing too detrimental.
The Nun II (2023)
Random mess of horror ideas
The original Nun was a bit overhyped and boring so I thought they had a low bar to rise above; they lowered it further.
The demon can supposedly kill people randomly from a distance, yet can't find a small girl hiding behind a barrel. Needs to possess Frenchie to kill some people but also can kill on its own. Is the greatest evil they've faced, yet is deathly allergic to alcohol.
Don't even get me started on the fact that a tiny Nun could track down a person who was at every place a death occurred, but the police were baffled.
It's upsetting that people prioritize jump scares and special effects over continuity and cohesive storytelling. In horror the biggest no-no is making the 'bad guy' unbeatable at the start and then too easily beaten.
Red Letter Day (2019)
Good concept, Bad movie
The glaring problem is there is no incentive for anyone to act on the red letters. You'd have to think regular people were one veiled threat, in a letter from an unknown person, away from killing a stranger. So since it's hard to fathom that, it highlights the ridiculousness of the plot as well as the terrible acting.
American Vandal: The Brownout (2018)
Good story for season 2 but not original
At first I couldn't remember where I'd seen this story, then it came to me....Bob's Burgers Season 3! Ha ha.
This season of Vandal is much stronger in suspicion and crime than the first, but it does suffer from a little bit of predictability. Some eps in the middle also feel like filler trying to stretch it out to 8 episodes. Other than that, I'd still recommend it. I mean, there isn't much originality these days so we're used to feeling like we've seen it all before. It's more about the journey anyway.
Pacific Rim Uprising (2018)
Terrible!
Terrible story! Woeful acting! This coming from a viewer that can usually put a positive spin on a lot of mediocre movies. This has no redeeming qualities and the plot hole are bigger than the final monster. Just watch the first one again, or Transformers, or Rampage if you want to see big robots and monsters fighting.
