Doppelgänger (1969)
Really Cool!
I had never seen this movie before it aired on a local cable sci-fi network. It reminded me of the Irwin Allen TV series of the late 60's (Time Tunnel etc). Excellent effects (they beat Star Trek 5 done 20 years later, but then that wasn't very hard to accomplish).
I found the script very intriguing and mature for this type of production. They would have needed a few touch ups to tie some loose ends on the characters' level, but for a kid movie its surprisingly interesting (especially the the glimpse at futuristic euro- politics, surprisingly similar to today's European Union!)
The plot is indeed reminiscent of Twilight Zone in general (as other users have pointed), but in this case it's a compliment.
Great sets, by the way!
7/10
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Not very good
I have seen this movie at a horror festival in Montreal. From the publicity, I thought I was in for an original adult-oriented horror movie. I was very disappointed to discover that Jeepers Creepers is a SCREAM disguised as a demon movie.
I would also agree with some of the other reviewers who pointed out that a demon who owns a truck and travel around in it is ridiculous... Even more so when they themselves makes the point that the demon can fly faster than ANY car/truck in the movie! Anyways, the director lacks imagination (so does the scriptwriter): everything you see in Jeepers Creepers, you've seen done A LOT BETTER elsewhere, and often too, none of the most important plot points/characters holds up to someone that has seen more than half a dozen good movies before... Just not worth wasting 2 hours of your life for!
Ying xiong (2002)
Impressive, yet flawed
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** This movie is simply beautiful to watch, it is probably the best looking martial arts film ever made. The music is also very impressive. But where I started to lose interest was 2/ 3 into the movie after re-watching the same events over and over from the different point of views. I don't feel that the multiple flash backs held as much interest as those in Rashomon did over the long run. When you watch the 2 lover skilling each others the first time it's poignant, after 3 times you become desensitized, and after you realize even the LAST flash back was false and they both commit suicide (sort of) on the mountain top, you don't feel as much as you ought to. This being said I still loved it and it's highly recommended for any fans of Chinese culture (even more so than for fans of martial arts; this movie has a very peaceful, zen-like philosophy that I found very appealing).
Die Alive (2001)
Fun little movie!
I was lucky enough to see this movie during its midnight premiere at a festival in Montreal called Fantasia. Although all expectations were for a really gory movie, it turned out to be a funny comedy not unlike Bowfinger, but with a documentary feel to it! There is a dose of fear in this (which builds up especially near the end) but it's all in good fun. See it with the idea of watching a fake documentary with great improv by the cast and you'll have fun.
