Taxi Driver (1976)
Unimpressed by the story
I was surprised to see the high ratings for this movie, in comparison to my own view on it. I am one of those who found this movie unexceptionally boring, and even almost felt like it was missing the plot. And no, I did not expect an action movie or huge thrills, I just wanted a story or a morale, and this extremely slow paced movie did nor really give me that. I've seen other reviews state that the lack of 'events' reflect the main characters life, which probably is true. But however cool the thought is, I'd rather watch a story that drags me into a world, rather than one where I can hardly focus on it.
On top of that the written plot describes a 'mentally unstable' person, and then he goes on getting his hands on a lot of guns, and you expect - or maybe I just hoped - that here was a smart way to introduce a morale to the story that encourages gun control in the U.S. But in the end Travis goes out, almost attempts to shoot a senator, runs away, and instead shoots a lot of "gangsters" and is proclaimed hero. A mentally unstable person, who has stalker tendencies, anger issues and a twisted sense of judgment end up being prised for a shooting massacre, and he didnt even have registered guns... Is that really a story worth telling?
Umi ga kikoeru (1993)
A pointless love story, that started out well
During the first scene, I was intruiged and excited to see where this would go... Guy sees girl - a 'when and how will he see her again' kinda story. That's what I thought
We go back in time and we realise he knew her from years before and I was more intruiged. His friend has a crush on her - yet again, I'm still caught up.
And then we meet the character. This is where it all falls to pieces for me. As a girl myself, I found Muto to be the manifestation of all that is bad about girls(or people). She's manipulative, she's selfish and self obsorbed, she's mean and she 'hates' all these country people. And on top of that the main character wonders several times about her manners and (bad) upbringing. And when her classmates gang up on her (not cool tho, but you see where they're coming from), she's yet again defiant, mean and selfish. But Taku sees her as this person who really stand up for herself, and is 'something else' - I disagree.
I wonder why Taku and Matsumo fall for her. Except for the fact that she's pretty.... and perhaps because Taku feels bad for her background story, but really you're not even taken through that story in a way that makes you empathise with her.
I love how Studio Gibli always have a morale in their stories, but I lack to see what it is in this case.
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Where's the actual ragnarok?
Can't agree with all the love and the praise this movie received. As with all Marvel movies I have high expectations, and on graphics they really do deliver. But the storyline and script of this movie does not go into my taste. Ragnarok? Where the heck was the actual ragnarok? You can't just call a movie ragnarok and have it be only a '10-mins-in-the-end' experience! And maybe the idea of integrating more humor is nice.. but at most times it was just too corny, and of low quality. Fight scenes cut weirdly so you see the attack begin, but not really end.. Hela is so powerful in Asgard, yet Thor still got to her. Loki deceived again and again, and then all of a sudden with no real reason he helped..
Too many things were a bit too easy for my tastes and for my expectations of a Marvel movie
