Shake, Rattle and Rock! (1994)
A very bad movie
About the only thing going for this movie was the music. Not only was this movie disappointing, but the ending was very unsatisfactory. I'm surprised Rene Zellwiger's career recovered from this. Howie Mandel was at that point in his career to actually turn down roles. This one, he should have turned down.
Hairspray, (original) was way better than this disappointment. At least that movie had a satisfactory ending.
Shake Rattle and Rock should be retitled "Shake Rattle and put this DVD under the tire of your car and run over it. "
This movie was a low point for everyone involved.
Overboard (1987)
Forget the Vow! Overboard is way better!
Unlike a certain RAchel Mc Adams movie that has just come out, Overboard is a classic. After falling off her boat, a young woman suffers amnesia. She's abandoned by her husband at the hospital, but she gets picked up by a handyman, who cons her into thinking she's his wife.
When I first saw this movie, I was kind of curious to find out how long Kurt Russell Was going to get away with what he was doing. Well, I found myself enjoying this film.
Kurt and Goldie had a wonderful chemistry together. (Too bad they are no longer together in real life.)
You want a good movie that deals with amnesia, this is the one to see. Not 50 first dates, not The Vow, but this one!
Dark New World (2009)
Lousy at best.
Just because a film is low budget doesn't mean you make it look low budget. (Unless that's the look you are going for. (Example Tapeheads, Terminal City Ricochet.) The special effects were really bad, the cinematography was worse, and the audio at times was poorly recorded. From a technical standpoint, it stunk.
The make up job on the zombies were okay, but that was about the only good thing I can say about this movie.
Sadly, whoever edited this movie did a hack job of it.
The story was decent, but it would have made a better comic book or animated film than a live action movie.
Arthur (2011)
Better than expected, but still doesn't hold a candle to the original.
I have to admit, when I saw this movie, I was expecting next to nothing. I was wrong. I agree, Russel Brand is no Dudley Moore. (I mean, come on, nobody else could have played such an iconic character.) But the Arthur had a good story. Here, Russel Brand's Arthur is far more reckless than Dudley Moore's Arthur. (To the point that Russell Brand's Arthur get arrested.)
Jennifer Garner's portrayal of Susan is far more extreme than the original. Here, Susan isn't just some spoiled rich girl, who is somewhat clueless, but rather this Susan is a gold digger.
And then there's Hobson, played by Helen Mirren. As it is, I love Helen Mirren, (Excalibur, 2010, etc.) I loved the way she played the part as a stern, yet compassionate mother figure to Arthur.
While this movie is in no way better than the original, I think that this is one of the better remakes as of late. (Way better than Clash of the Titans.)
Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003)
Painful to watch
First of all, I think it's a bad idea to make a sequel of a sequel. (Seems redundant.) Second, the premise is very weak. The character of Cousin Eddie was very memorable in both Vacation and Christmas Vacation, but he's only good as a supporting character, not as a lead. This is just another prime example of Hollywood trying to milk something that has already run its course. (I felt that the original Christmas Vacation was the swan song to the Trilogy. (Yes, I did say Trilogy!)
If they were serious about making this movie, how about hiring writers who actually put time and effort into a good script? it seemed that the writers just threw something together, submitted it, and the movie got made.
No wonder this movie was made for TV and released direct to video, instead of being theatrically released.
I think Randy Quaid should have passed on this one.
