Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Americocentric
I am still watching this as I write this. There is some good stuff in there, except the perspective. Phil keeps going on about the importance of meeting people from all over the globe...and then he end up with an American who moved abroad or he is reflecting on things from a very US perspective. Just a couple of episodes in it starts getting painful.
Good try! But please do better.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
Beautifully following the line of the unexpected.
I noticed some people getting upset about this ending, but I must say I loved it!
What do people expect from this series? A happy ending? All's well that ends well? Of course not, it is Game of Thrones.
It does follow the line of the series, and some things are just too perfect. Cercei and Jaime leaving the world the same way they came into it. The Gods flipping a coin. Drogon melting that horrible throne, he knew what was to blame. Bran with all his knowledge, unwanting, the new ruler. Tyrion, unwanting, his Hand. Even Samwell mentioning democracy.
I guess that's why I loved it. It is sobering, yet hopeful.
The Graham Norton Show (2007)
from someone who doen't care about celebrities...
Well sit down and open a bottle of wine ... or two. Because when you start watching this, you just can't stop or get enough.
When artists create movies, albums, plays or books, they usually have to go on a tour to promote it, right? I say 'have to' because this process seems extreeemly boring to me. So many journalists have been asking the same bloody questions, and now you have to go answer them on TV. Very uncomfortable, because...really the host usually doesn't care, really you've just spent so much time of your life on this and you have been focussing on something else for months now, and reallly you don't want to wear the elaborate clothes... ugggh. That doesn't bode well for a show trying to promote shit.
Enter the Graham Norton Show!
The Grahman Norton Show Team knows this, it seems. So they have gone with a unique angle:
1. An actually interested, hilariously blabbermouth host. (quite gay of course).
2. Ply the guests with drink.(Although 'denied' on Stephen Colbert, we all know this happens. Britania rules the Waves! ...Waves of Wine that is ;) )
3. Briefly mention what you have to... and then go on to the celebrities': funny Tweets, illegal exploits, shoe laces, circumcision that never happened, insults of other celebrities, wanking off soldiers in parks, looking like otters and then get said celebrities to pose on photos like some other otters, duel with light sabers, ride a unicycle, break dance....
For short, this show is as great as it is because it's fun for everybody involved: the host, the team, the public, the guests, and people watching at home.
And this from someone who doen't care about celebrities...
Black Mirror (2011)
Scare me silly.... sometime in the future?
After my cousin and cousin-in-law showed genuine freaked-outness and enthusiasm about these series I decided to watch it.
The series is indeed quite original. And the fact that all the episodes deal with some negative side-effect from technology makes it relevant.
But even though I definitely believe the technological possibilities proposed in the episodes, I certainly can't believe the human aspect. The behavior of the characters is farfetched, unbelievable. Exactly in that sense: I don't believe them.
I guess this would categorise the series as 'horror', scary things happen and the characters overreact and do silly things, things that people wouldn't do in reality. And there's the snag for me: the series seems to want to use something from reality, technology, to scare us, yet fails to do so because of the characters' responses.
There also is a strange focus on certain themes that seem to be the biggest horror to the creators of the show, and they are usually very sexual. Mostly men having to deal with the woman they love not having sex with them.
I'd like to see this show grow. I'd like it to become more 'thriller' instead of 'horror'. I want to actually believe these things could happen. Well... only for an hour or so ;)
I'd like to see this show grow and create storylines that involve more variant fears, and I can see they seem to be doing this. Hear, hear!
So yes, please, go on. I cant' wait for the creators to really scare me silly... in the future.
The Mist (2007)
Not all's well that ends well
I thought I'd watch this movie after Jacksepticeye mentioned he liked it. Also IMDb gave it a 7,2, not to shabby. So let's get a beer and a snack and give this one a try, the trailer looked good!
I liked the idea, like in some of my favorites as "the Cube", get very different people stuck together in a nasty situation and see what happens. Yay! love psycho horror stuff.
But you know... I'm older now... so the stupid Christian bitch again? Is this an American thing? Must someone like this always be present in these films...boring.
Then a lot of other stereotypical stuff happens, let me not spoil it for you, but you'll be sitting on the edge of your seat screaming at the characters for their stupidity, not for their safety.
In the end the main character will even be so stupid, you won't believe it.
An then it happens... the movie becomes good. In my opinion, most people seem to hate the end (has to do with reading the book I believe) , I love it. It's the only thing in the film that gives it meaning and perspective.
So watch it! Get annoyed most of the time and enjoy the end.
Paranormal Activity (2007)
not what I was looking for...
I wanted a nice old scare. But no... I didn't find it here. It sounded nice: Couple haunted by a demon. But to be honest, there wasn't a lot of haunting going on until the very end. And by that time you are really craving for some haunting, I can tell you!
Why? well because a Douchebag somehow manages to get nice, but meek, girlfriend. She is haunted all her life, but he very much feels in control anyway. He won't let his house and his girlfriend be bothered.
I was hoping for the Neanderthal idiot to get killed , and he did!
So really, it has a happy ending!
How scary is that?
Next please!
Downton Abbey (2010)
Soap series in chic clothing
Started watching Downton Abby, after hearing good things about it and noticing it gets an 8,8 rating on IMDb. At the end of season two I have to admit, it's just a good looking, properly done, beautifully acted.... soap series. Mary and Matthew are the equivalent of Brooke and Ridge if you ask me. Miraculous recoveries, people disappearing and coming back, and disappearing and ...well you get the idea. Adultery, murder, people dying during sex and girls being left at the altar...I mean really. 8,8?! It must be a hit, because certain people who would normally claim to not want to touch soap operas with a ten foot pole (but really always wanted to watch) now finally have something to watch. So I'm giving it some credit, but I will also recognize it for what it is. And I can't stand these story-lines, I've actually started shouting at the characters out of anger and annoyance! Farewell Downton Abbey
