Once Upon a Time in London (2019)
Barely deserves 2 stars
I very rarely switch off a movie midway through but this mess left me with no choice. 2 stars is generous and is mainly for the sets which looked pretty decent. Very poor script and plot is non existent. Avoid.
Paris qui dort (1925)
Parisian sci-fi roots
I caught this as part of the 2021 Virgin Dublin International Film Festival and I really enjoyed it. Hard to imagine it was made almost 100 years ago and the quality of the print used was top notch.
It's a simple enough story of a small group of people roaming through a silent Paris. It's set over just a few days and there was a lot packed in for the relatively short running time (by today's standards) of about an hour.
Be Good or Be Gone (2020)
A decent effort but....
I've just watched this film as part of the 2021 Dublin International Film Festival and it's a decent effort but despite the best efforts of all involved it's not great. It's pretty much what it says on the tin, a film about 2 cousins on temporary release from prison trying to avoid trouble but finding trouble at every turn. Watch it anyway, maybe you'll appreciate it more than I did.
Rose Plays Julie (2019)
Are you sure you know who you are?
Although the theme of this film is so dark and intense that it's impossible to use the words 'I enjoyed it'. Having said that for the bravery of the story, the acting and filming it is worth seeing. I was at the Irish Premiere during the Virgin Dublin International Film Festival at the weekend and was present for the all too brief Q&A afterwards featuring the directors, producer and stars Ann Skelly, Aidan Gillen & Orla Brady. The amount of effort it takes to get a good quality Irish movie made is unreal so get behind this movie, go see it even if it makes you uncomfortable.
