Dung Fong Bat Bai: Fung wan joi hei (1993)
Great but not greater
This as the 3rd in a sequel is not as great as the first 2. You must 3 film in order or you miss many points.
These movies born out of the golden era in HongKong movies about Gongfu without CG. So if it is your plate you will love it. Sting over CG.
Staring in this one is the 2 women who is deemed as true beauty then and now. Comparing to the so called female actors, they are real deal both face and skill.
The 3rd one on the level of fighting is blown out of proportion of realism bit. They know the end is coming and make a blast of everything. But for this sequel , it is more for nostalgia, not really for story. I mean the guy Lin played.
Anyways, if you are new, watch the first 2 first.
Hostile Planet (2019)
The taste is stunning
Somehow I wonder the narrator voice changed from other old elderly narrator tone to this passionate tone with each word coming with a decisiveness in it. Beside the voice, the camera has the taste to linger at the moment exactly I feel I want it to be lingering. The moment of an expression of an animal. It is definitely a privilege to live at 4K era now with this kind of work being done. This is our planet yet I can tell you this is out planet at all. We are the passers.
Homeland (2011)
Way off from the season 1,2,3
Just finished season 8. Cartoon-ish plot but good actors. Carrie should smile more. Mental doesn't mean bitter face.
Failed at ending.
There is no need to kill the spy. Since no one knows who she is! Saul can record a video to claim anyone in Russia govt. What's the difference?
Saul keeps all the books/secret notes the Spy gave him?
Saul has sensed Carrie's weirdness after she's back, yet Saul is still being taken down?
The wife of Saul, what a easy to trust woman!
Then ending puts Carrie back into business and Saul seems loving it. What a great pair!
Code 8 (2019)
Could be 7 if not went retard at a blink
The whole, ok, 99% should bring you
Joy. So to kill time, watch worthy. But , painfully, and to be fair, retard as it went at the very end, in no way, a man whose personality fall out so thwarted to do what he does at the very end. This is such a downer. I feel so sorry for a movie which has most of part done right. Such a pity! Well, do not want to spoil, let me just say this, if you love your mother so much, but you can not hold the basic moral ground not to take another human life even it is to trade your mother life.
Joker (2019)
Long time no see
Movies been dead to me long time until this came up. I bet this movie will keep ringing a bell in years to come as it strikes the core conflict of western world cultural issue which rooted from the structure of the society which is to worship so-called property gaining success instead of moral value champions. Individuals are so detached intentionally by design to perpetuate the poor keep being poor and rich keep being rich. Self-endeavor will not matter. To success, you fight. Why? The system has been designed this way. Until at times, the people fed up, the people say enough is enough. And here is the "Joker".
Succession (2018)
Why this is so bad
The old man is great acting and I've seen the better him in 'deadwood'.
All the foul languages might be the only fluent part between all the conversations which make everything cheap so I wonder how unknown to me about the creator of the show. After digging him, yes, I don't know about him.
The boys are all totally far-fetch from even remotely stand-up adults. I wonder what's the point of watching the first 4 episode about the weightless characters of the boys. It seems the writer has a very simple understanding human nature in a story worth knowing which is so that it must change if it is not getting better, then worse. All the children are a complete boredom imho. The father on the other hand are reduced to such a small clips of film and I think what a waste this is.
I am offended by the lack of imagination and lack of effort to even try to make the story more realistic or more interesting by the creator so I won't be surprised at all if the creator is out of job. And 7+ score is to give the effort of the old man and the old actress which steal all the thunders from the show. Such a pity, a ruined show by screen play. Oh, also hatefully moving the camera all the time to make it more realistic, it only make it worse. I better moving camera show is "Friday Night Light". Well, you don't have that kind of blood rush story line, give it up or you only make watcher sick.
The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
it's a failure
Really. do not watch it if you love the first one. I do.
For a general movie-making, this one is also below 5 I have to say. The story is too simple. The plot feels being created within an hour. Screen writing done in one afternoon. The conversation script is blank. The characters is too boring and unreal. I regret to see that the original movie actor is on the movie. They must be regretful as well but for some other reason, they cannot refuse to take this.
Now, comparing to the original one. It's one step to heart-breaking to watch this but definitely a refund-of-my-time one.
Since I love the first one, don't remember how many times I have watched it ( and "Chinese Coffee" ). I just love dynamics between characters being built up by exchanging words. I almost like a magic. You can reason but it's not easy to reason. This is what life is. Great movie is life, is alive.
This one...calm myself a bit, where should I begin:
1. except a few English words about region, the religion/culture/human knowledge spilled out in this move is zero
2. the movie depict the young as naive as it can. I first thought the Asian girl could be somebody or at least the Christian boy, both of them failed to be someone. I can see what the writer sees the kids today ( all very naive and stupid now) but hey, that's not what interests people ). Human shines because they can no matter young or old
3. surely you can age John Oldman, beat him up, make him flee. but what's the flipping point of that? You want to say that he is still not possibly be accepted still? Or you want us to be afraid that he will be killed? If it is that he can recover from the injury, we already knew that.
4. words from John in the original is his charm. But the opponents must be worthwhile. The first one is bunch of doctors from university. This one is a kid who believes in god and finally decides to hurt. And conversation is so little in this movie. God, how interesting is that?!
My hope, before I watch this movie is actually to see John met the guy he mentioned in the original movie, who is like him, never age. And since John has budha experience. Why not let him meet a monk. Let some more religious conversion begins. Even another set of group of intellectuals with the John like the original, I would love to see that.
Hana-bi (1997)
Where words fail to do it
When someone dies, How much content does the plot make out of it? It depends on what story and how the story is told.
Given the speechless scenes and most of the time music in the background, I wouldn't expect that I can feel so much and feel even the story goes quite fast and require me to follow both with brain and my emotions.
I never experienced before that I would burst into tears after the movie was over and the cast list started rolling on the screen already.
I had to find my eye drops because my eyes hurt so much.
Life is so fragile yet beautiful, and and then, the ending of it. You and I, we shall be.
Se diu ying hung: Dung sing sai jau (1993)
This is a 10 at its time
There is a wind that blows and all the good things grow with it. After the wind is gone, the good things turn back and never come any good things alike again.
So this film is from a wind that was blowing during that span of years in Hong Kong, never again you would be able to see those director, actors, screen writers, dress designers, stunt man so passionate and joyfully getting involved for fun, for imagination, for successful results.
The same name, even same director had shot anther one with the same Chinese name in 2011. It's rated very low in IMDb and it's rated like 3 in a Chinese review site. You can see how people hated it because the lack of dedication of the actors, the ridiculous taking-audience-as-a-fool jokes and random involvements of all the celebrities from musical industries into the acting business and they are naively thinking themselves that they are doing a good job. It's a shame, as simple as it is.
But this film has stars in it, real stars. Leslie Cheung, Tony Leung, Carina Lau Brigitte Lin, Jacky Cheung...I just can't name them all here. The director is the same director who 2 years later directed the 2-squeal films (A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box, A Chinese Odyssey Part Two - Cinderella) which turns to absolute classic now and ever and make Stephen Chow an iconic star as well.
The Mandarin voice-over done by Taiwan people is superb so if you are learning mandarin, it's top Mandarin. Originally it's Cantonese.
If you like Gongfu movie, this one is a blast. It's fine nice delicate cut between a flying Gong Fu super power guy and gravity still making sense here. It's a blessing in the 90s when computer is not good enough to make all the digital stuff. I personally prefer a stunt man than GC effect, it's real fake, not fake fake.
Again, the wind was there and people had no intention for fame and fortune because there is none, they made a laugh and take great joy about what they did - this film.
Trouble with the Curve (2012)
Not very good
Under 7 scores would be a bit too low. But it really has some diversions which is not advancing the core plot which is very emotional and interesting to watch about relationship of the daughter and the father.
Full credits must be given to the old actor - West, even he looks a bit scary with this extremely old figure. But man is still man. Without him, this movie would be plain.
Given these uninteresting moments, for those heart-felt moments with West and his daughter who is very attractive and sweet actress, it is worth watching.
Baseball, father and daughter are the highlights in the movie. I feel sorry that the writer tried too hard to bring up too many story-line which I simply fast-forward. Loving baseball, Loving father is enough evidence for people to know the loving part of a human being. Another story line simply just doesn't have enough time to enrich its quality and its natural branch-out in the movie.
