Genevieve (1953)
A very special film
"Genevieve" is a very unique film, with a rare quality that I have found in only a few films and books - there's something about it that is very appealing, and yet impossible to define. It is similar to the Ealing comedies, which isn't surprising, as Henry Cornelius directed "Passport to Pimlico" at the Ealing studios before leaving to become an independent filmmaker. I like it better than the Ealing films, though. It's so gentle and enjoyable - the ideal film to watch when home in bed with a cold!
I can't imagine anyone not liking this one. I smile whenever I think of it. It's a gem.
Enjoy!
Lost in Translation (2003)
The Emperor's New Clothes?
Why is this movie so highly rated? Aside from some interesting shots of Tokyo (which a good travel film could provide) there is little here worth seeing, and numerous opportunities to explore the central relationship are totally wasted. The acting is flat, the characters poorly developed, the story almost non-existent, and there are long, boring scenes that accomplish nothing at all. Is this movie the cinematic equivalent of the Emperor's New Clothes?

Oklahoma! (1999)
A total delight!
As exuberant and wonderful as Kenneth Branagh's 1993 "Much Ado About Nothing", this amazing production deserves a "15"; alas, I can only give it a "10". Hugh Jackman is a revelation, leaping into the film with cheerful high energy from his first appearance on the set. A must-see for lovers of musicals and for all others too. A sure cure for depression!
