Lucy (2014)
A great sci-fi concept movie
As a concept the movie is great. Well thought out. Well written. Well acted. Let's not forget about the word "fiction". If you try to take this movie too seriously you might be disappointed. If you've enjoyed movies like: Transcendence (2014), Interstellar (2014), Limitless (2011), Altered States (1980), etc., then I feel you'll like this one too.
Side note: I really enjoyed the quick cuts. Quit unique, very humorous at times, sad at others but always in direct relationship to whatever preceded the quick cut--very entertaining!
The Invisible Man (2020)
Time becomes meaningless... as each scene is drawn out ad infinitum...
Wow. Could it be more drawn out? No--not without time moving backward. SLOW. TOO SLOW. REALLY TOO SLOW. SOOOOO SLOOOOW. Rant over.
The acting was fine given the script, which was poor and defies all logic.
Why ALL the running with CONTINUAL looking back (over and over and over) for what? To glimpse the "invisible" pursuer? The movie is a true mess.
This film could have been more and should have been more. Especially given Leigh Whannell's other works. For instance, even though "Upgrade" was not a masterpiece at least the story fit together and was entertaining for bullied men.
Here the writing is lacking and caters to bullied women. Truly a disappointment. Suspenseful at times... but nothing more.
Annihilation (2018)
Weird and inexplicable isn't enough
I've read the trilogy written by Jeff VanderMeer which by comparison makes the weirdness in this movie seem tame. There are very few parallel story lines but at least the movie stuck to the inexplicable nature of the entire teams encounter. Reading the first book may shed some light but there's a good deal of plot deviation.
Unfortunately, as a standalone work of science fiction the movie itself isn't very interesting and not overly enjoyable to watch. Good cinematography, great visuals, mostly fine acting, but the script just doesn't carry it. Bottom line: if more of these get made count me out.
Wayward Pines (2015)
Season One: What the...? Season Two: I'm Out.
Season one, OK at best. Season two, two episodes in and I'm done. Season one deviated from the books in ways that were not necessary and only took away from Blake Crouch's original vision. I know nothing of the process or motivation employed to move the books to television but without a doubt it's not what I was looking or hoping for. If you enjoyed the books, as I did, then I recommend caution if you're looking to enjoy parallel story lines. There are few at best. Since Blake Crouch is currently listed in the series writing credits (for 20 episodes as of this post) I can only assume that this is his intended direction for the TV adaptation of this book series. Simply put: It's not at all what I was hoping to watch. (Only as a side note, I highly recommend reading the three books from which that the television show is loosely based.)
Zero Hour (2013)
Most Seem to Dislike, I Like
I've watched the first 3. I, unlike others, like the characters and it's nice to see Anthony Edwards in role again--since his days with Northern Exposure (I never watched ER). The young cast, most notably, Scott Michael Foster and Addison Timlin I find to be refreshing, both of which had a stint on Californication among other projects not leaving out that Scott worked on The River. Michael Nyqvist has chops...here in Canada he's been on Millennium but back home he's well known. His character is well acted and I feel that he brings the best out of Jacinda Barrett, she's no slouch herself.
Carmen Ejogo; she's been around and can act. Here's where I have to complain; the writing she has to deliver is poor and her role could be a bit more stereotypical--but not much.
Is the show going to win awards? Not yet for sure. But reading the other reviews made me want to say this: "Let's wait and see where this is going...". I truly believe that there is a lot more in store.
Reading my own review I got thinking that I look like I work for a studio or some such--I don't. I simply don't find the show all that bad and it's staying on my record list for now.
