The Breakfast Club (1985)
Classic movie, puts you in touch with yourself
Five very different high school kids wind up at Saturday detention for a various reasons. The educator pulling Saturday duty isn't the nicest guy around, and the kids immediately begin carving out their niches according to what they believe their social status and place in life demands. By the end of the film, you understand that this day, they've learned a lot about life and who they are, and that they will not allow their lives to be determined by what their parents, teachers, and other students think they should be. This is a wonderful film, and a powerful lesson in life, love, friendship, and free will. What happens in between the start and finish will make you mad, sad, and everything in between. The actors do a superb job of pulling you in and making you care, between raw outbursts of emotion, or displays of self sacrifice, this is one of those rare films that just touches you.
Prometheus (2012)
I was stoked to view some epic film. Fail.
Okay, so this is a big budget movie that purports to be some epic event, but ten minutes into it, I wasn't sure if by accident, I was watching some made for sci-fi channel low budget piece of garbage by "The Asylum". Their mission is the most expensive, the largest undertaking in the history of mankind, and these guys wake up from years of deep sleep to immediately disobey orders, run around a completely uncharted alien planet without taking even five minutes to study the damn thing. Did they not hire any technical advisers? I just get really irritated when Hollywood types, producers and directors, have zero clue about how things would have gone, and simply have the characters act like a bunch of idiot mitten screwballs, believing that the kid doing the special effects will make up for the really, really bad direction and complete lack of technical advice.
Monster Ark (2008)
A must not see
One thing that really peeves me, and it's prevalent with these made for SciFy channel movies, is the complete lack of knowledge of the subjects that they're doing. In particular, the military, but in the case of "Monster Ark", they managed to humiliate themselves with their lack of archaeological knowledge, as well. I know that these people can't be expected to be actual scientists, but it would be nice if they could be portrayed as a little more professional than a carnival barker.
As far as the military goes, this is great insight into the minds of the writers / director. If these people write characters that are so completely incompetent, what does that say about how they would confront a similar problem? Poorly written, bad acting, zero technical or military advisers, and a monster that makes Godzilla look real, and you have a big time flop. I hope those guys filled their backpacks at the craft services table, because this is a dog, plain and simple.
