90 min instead of usual 30
26 August 2011
By the time François Ozon released this film he was better known for his short movies and the "Les amants criminels" definitely lacks both quality and intensity to last for 90 minutes. Jérémie Reniers' character was mighty unconvincing and contradicting. Natacha Régnier, on the other hand, has delivered but her effort is diminished, due to the fact, that her role is not central.

On the bright side, film contains pecularities and details only attentive and thinking person can spot and analyze.

Overall, in my humble opinion, I think that 30 to 45 minutes is more than enough for that particular movie, due to the fact that, acting is not great, details are scattered too widely and outcome is predictable.

NOTE: I did not read or watch "Hansel and Gretel".

The Swindle (1997)
If you adore Huppert, avoid this film

Warning: Spoilers
I always adored Isabelle Huppert acting abilities but "Rien ne va plus" is one of those films you want to avoid watching. Plot is trivial and full of lengthy and absolutely empty conversations providing no entertainment whatsoever.

In my opinion, it would be much better to scare the viewer somewhere in the middle or pass 2/3 of a film but yet again we are presented with lousy and long scene of small time criminals versus sharks in business resulting in most unlikely outcome.

By that time I have lost interest in the film and did not finish watching it.

Film not for everyone
24 August 2011
Film not for everyone. Very slow, intimate and deep. With a lot of static camera views allowing you to drift in your thoughts. Character of Pharaon De Winter (Emmanuel Schotté) reminds me about Ingman Bergmans' "From the Life of the Marionettes " Peter Angelmann (Robert Atzorn). They are both very troublesome introverts with effeminate mindset in the world dominated by men, thus creating distortion somewhere deeply in their mind which eventually leads to abnormal behaviour.

I do recommend this film to those who enjoy deep psychological and philosophical cinema.
