The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
In a word: lacklustre
Granted I only watched the first ep but I doubt I will be watching any more. As everyone else said, Hill House was excellent. Pretty much the only horror thing I've ever liked. I recall after the first episode being super compelled and I binged that show with great excitement. And of course I'm going to compare this show to that one. First of all the acting is worse or at least the casting. Like what is up with the gardener being a thin and attractive girl? Makes zero sense. There's nothing about the first ep that drew me in. Creepy kids and a lady in the lake yeah yeah. I'm being pretty harsh, it actually seems like an ok show, but with so much incredible tv out there I don't think this is worth my time.
Medical Police (2020)
It goes wrong by trying to make every moment funny
Every millisecond of this show is trying to be funny, which doesn't quite work. It's like that one girl you know who tries way too hard to get people to like her.
Some really great laughs mixed in there, but the majority of the jokes are bad. So overall it feels sour.
I say it's worth a watch if you're super baked. Or if you really click with this sense of humour, cause I can see some people loving this show.
Unbelievable (2019)
There's a lot of 'good' tv right now, this is 'great'
Endlessly compelling and very emotionally intense. Never have I felt more compassion for a character than for the main girl. Perfectly acted and they did an exceptional job at showing the girls internal turmoil and helplessness. I just wanted someone to hug her and tell her it was going to be ok.
And another thing I kept thinking about was how the two main detective women are major female role models. If Hollywood wants tips on how to nail the 'strong female' role, they need to look no further. This crushes the bechdel test. Also hopefully proves to everyone that you can have a mostly female cast and not have it be a gimmick.
Adrift (2018)
Really resonated with me
My dad recommended I watch this about a year ago and I ignored him until now. I made a grave mistake! Maybe my own father does know me after all? Really, I consider myself to be the male version of Tami in this film. I left Canada when I was 24 and bought a 1 way ticket to Australia. The opening scenes brought up some good memories. I felt more connected to the characters because I see such a large part of myself in them. Maybe more than any other movie I've seen. But of course, my reaction to the film is personal and I see how it might not help the average review reader, so...
Worth watching? Absolutely! Just hit play. I think most people would like watching this film. Maybe it won't hit you as hard as it did me, but I don't think you'll find you wasted your time. It did exactly what it set out to do. It's a film about a real life tragedy and it tells that story perfectly. I guess whether you're interested in that story or not is up for you to decide.
Inside Jokes (2018)
If you are interested in comedy at all, just watch it
This is the perfect reality show, cause it fairly accurately shows real people in their version of reality. No one is really acting for the camera or anything. It's genuine. You begin to root for every single one of these comics because you see them as people.
And these people are trying so goddamn hard to get somewhere as comedians and I really thought it was amazing to watch. It inspires hope I think.
The Ides of March (2011)
Better than expected
To start off, I'm not into politics in any way. I don't really know much about the different parties etc. . Because of this, I thought I would despise this movie. I decided to watch it ultimately because of the award nominations it has been receiving.
For the first 30 minutes or so I was struggling to find anything in the show that I cared about. The story was a bit dull and generic to begin, just another political campaign movie I thought. The story then took a sharp turn and it became very exciting to watch. Until the end of the movie it was very intriguing. There was never a time where I questioned a character's actions. The seemingly good characters introduced at the beginning of the movie start to show more and more of their bad side. Eventually everything collides and ends with the protagonist (Gosling) questioning what his next move should be. The ending is actually quite good, it reminded me of the end of inception, where it is left upon the audience to think about what might have happened.
I think Clooney did a wonderful job directing this movie. I give a 7/10 because it started so slow. The story is brilliant though. Makes you think about what could be happening behind closed doors in the real political world.
