The Last Victim (2021)
Vastly underrated gem.
This wonderful film is currently rated as under 5 stars on IMDB.
Film, like any art form, is subjective obviously, but notwithstanding this, a rating of 5 is ridiculously low for this excellent, stylish revenge thriller.
I will list the reasons this film is underrated quickly rather than bore people with a long winded review....
1) Great soundtrack ( original neo-folk female singer songwriter)
2) Fantastic acting from seasoned performers like Ron Perlman and Ali Larter from the Final Destination films
3) Absolutely gripping storyline with believable dialogue and a zinger of a twist near the end
The only conceivable negative (and it is a small one) is that it's not that original, but really, who cares? I enjoy revenge thrillers so for me it's not really a negative.
Find this on prime TV and enjoy.
FUBAR (2023)
Best Arnie project since Total recall.
Like many of us I grew up watching the Arnie movies in the 80s and absolutely loved them. That great classic run of films that combined action, drama and comedy came to an abrupt end after total recall. Since then he has appeared in nothing noteworthy....... Until Now !!
Fubar has everything we have all been doing to see Arnie in for far too long. This excellent series plays to Arnies strengths with loads of corny but funny lines, superb action sequences but more importantly (and this is what his most recent films lacked) the series is excellently plotted with great characters. I'm really hoping he'll be back.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Hugely Entertaining, ignore the haters.
This film was fantastic. Why? 1) Fantastic central performance 2) Excellent dialogue 3) Original plot. 4) Keeps you rivetted right through the duration of the film.
This last point for me is the most important. Despite being a huge fan of film ( film noir, horror, art films, sci fi, dumb action B movies, anything really) over recent years few films manage to hold my interest for the duration. This did. Watch it and enjoy it, trust me, I know what I'm doing.
The Alienist (2018)
Ignore haters, Season 2 is excellent.
I put a lot of stock in the quality of IMDB reviews but over the past few years I have seen a depressing trend of biased reviews motivated by political leanings or prejudice.
I loved the first session of this show but delayed watching season 2 due to the numerous negative reviews it received here (which, in my weakness, I am very susceptible to).
Eventually, however, I decided to give it a go anyway and can honestly say I have no understanding as to why anyone would think season two is not at least the equal to it's predecessor.
Please ignore the negative reviews of you are considering watching season 2, it is absolutely superb. Fantastic dialogue, script, characterization and acting.
Black Lightning (2018)
Haters back off
Completely perplexed by the bad reviews, I can only surmise that there is some agenda behind most of them. Of the negative reviews I have read so far, the principle complaint is about the bad acting which by any reasonable persons opinion (in mine) is completely untrue. Rather, the acting is exemplary, especially compared to the other superhero TV series, the " real world" acting here ensures this series tops other highest ready contemporaries like daredevil and Jessica Jones. The score is also absolutely fantastic, reminiscent of the blaxploitation movies of the 70s. It's early days for me as I'm only 2 episodes in, but so far for entertainment value I'm finding this to be more entertaining than most of Netflix series, hero based or otherwise.
Burnout (2013)
Underrated under the radar gem.
Saw this movie recently on Amazon Prime and thoroughly enjoyed it, so my next logical step in these instances is to read the reviews of the knowledgeable IMDb community. Imagine my surprise to find not a single written review. Now, just to put this into perspective, I despise having to cobble together some kind of semi coherent sentences but damn it, this movie does not deserve to be reviewless (I did warn you). Anyways, fantastic characters played by talented actors in a very realistic way. Beautiful cinematography, wonderfully witty script, quirky ( bleugh hate that word) indie soundtrack, original plot. What more do you want from a great movie? Watch it now, unbelievable that only ten people have rated this on IMDb years after release .
