Interesting idea, but impossible to do right
18 January 2023
I was interested in this show because of the episode viewing order or lack thereof. I immediately thought it couldn't work - you can't build tension and create proper characters and storylines if you want them to work in any order. But I thought I should give this a chance - it might surprise me.

Nope. It is exactly what I expected. I started with yellow and it was incredibly boring. I didn't know any of the characters, I didn't care about them. So I dropped it all.

I guess they managed to hire so many talented actors based on concept promise alone. I hope they were paid well for this waste of time.

Unworthy of your time

I started watching the movie, because I was intrigued by the cool visuals and atmosphere of the trailer. I did expect some weirdness, but within a tolerable and understandable level. Imagine my disappointment, when the movie turned out to be sluggish and nonsensical.

Then there was the second disappointment. I thought maybe there are hidden meanings behind every mushroom-filled halucination that happened on screen, there is something to the original story that I don't know and that's why I don't understand in the movie. I spend half an hour trying to find an explanation of what I saw, reading positive reviews to find out what people liked in this movie. I couldn't find anything. So maybe it's not that I'm too ignorant and stupid to understand the movie, there is just nothing to understand - it's just decent visuals and acting, but no story, no meaning, no message, no point.

Horribly wasted 2 hours for one of the worst movies of 2021.

Weak
13 January 2021
I understand the love for horror movies and cliches, I understand the need for Eastern Europe to catch up to Western cinema, but this attempt was just lame. It's one thing to reference and pay respect to the classics in the genre, it's another to build a movie on cliches and nothing else. Add to that annoying actors and boredom.

The only reason why this gets 2 stars is because it accurately mocks the bad sides of Polish (and Eastern European in general) society such as clinging to obsolete old ways, being afraid of technology, sticking religion to everything and more.

Terrible

I'm only giving it 3 stars because of the beautiful landscapes and action. The screenplay is horrible. It's made for children under 6 or for imbeciles. Characters are flat and often plain stupid, certain story details make no sense, it is super obnoxious in propagating its outdated values. Every second line is "loyal, brave, true" or "family is most important". Blah!

Final Space: The Other Side (2019)
Season 2, Episode 4

WOW!
1 May 2020
I very rarely write reviews here, but this episode deserves it. I watched it a year ago and it I still remember how impressive it was. And how much better and surprising it is, compared to the rest of the otherwise ok series. I'm shocked it isn't rated number one, but I guess it's because the audience this show is aimed at is more immature, so they value the action episodes more.

This one has a very clever concept and an amazing twist at the end. It left me crying, just as much as the dog episode of Futurama. It's so impactful and thought out. It concentrates on the s1 characters that are the core of the story, it is less ridiculous than normal (but still funny) and it's much smarter. I don't want to comment on the story, because I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but I would definitely recommend it in a top 5 time-traveling episodes list of any show.

Dracula (2020)

The first great series of 2020
9 January 2020
I binge-watched this and I'm amazed. The first episode is outstanding, it immediately hooks you up and doesn't let you go. It ends on a cliffhanger and then suddenly the second episode is something completely different, but still great. And then the third changes the game one more time. People seem to dislike the third episode, but I disagree with them. It is a little bit slower and more phylosophical, but still has great horror, great drama and nice comedic touches.

If you have seen Moffat and Gattiss at work, you kinda know what to expect. They have some flaws in their writing, they are a little bit too self-indulgent, constantly trying to overdo themselves with twists, turns and character studies, and by doing that - going overboard with realism and plot holes. But it's all forgivable, because of their bravery to do something different, something deep, something complicated and something truly engaging.

Furthermore, the actors here are great. True, they have great characters to them, but they did a great job as well, especially Dracula. Menacing, funny, terrifying, somewhat charming in a horribly scary way - super effective.

The final is somewhat abrupt, but I still think it makes enough sense and I don't think a season 2 is needed. Thank you, BBC and team (and Netflix), for doing this wonderful show and bringing back my faith in good television!

Rellik (2017)
3/10
Great idea, terrible execution
4 May 2018
I don't normally watch series like this - I find the crimi series predictable and repetitive. But I read that Rellik had a story told backwards and I thought "hey, maybe this will be interesting and different". I was wrong.

The idea was great - to concentrate not on story development and character actions, but on their motives and the reasons they did them, and at the same time not reveal the killer until the latest possible moment. I also liked that it was relatively realistic in terms of real police work and how long some things take. I liked that the main character was a broken man and his lover was quite sexy. But that's about all the good things I can say.

The killer was obvious from the start. It's very disappointing to find out you were right with your suspicions all along. It's good to give certain clues, but by episodes 3 and 4 they were basically shouting it in the audience's faces. There were many subplots that went absolutely nowhere. Certain reveals were so poorly written, as if by a 5-year-old. The killer was supposedly smart and careful and yet acted like a lunatic after the reveal. The backwards watching prevents you from caring about any of the characters and the amount of characters makes the watch confusing (and not because I'm dumb an unable to follow it, thank you very much - it's simply poorly written). Also, it took only 6 episodes to create so much family drama, that it would feel like an year of The Bold and the Beautiful, and by that I mean it goes over the top towards ridiculousness.

I struggled to watch past episode 3 and I only watched to the end, because I had passed the half and I didn't want to believe that this series has absolutely nothing surprising or worth my time at least in the end. How naive of me.

The Parade (2011)

The best gay & the best Balkan movie I've ever seen
16 January 2016
I don't care if you think the movie is "cliche riddled". It represents an idea, a society, a culture, a philosophy... You can't do all that with super original characters. It's not about these specific characters, what counts here is the message to us as a society and our choice for our roles in it.

I rarely find movies, which can make me laugh hard and cry my face wet with tears - often at the same time. This one succeeds! I rarely find gay movies which are worth watching - this is not the 10000th drama about the doomed love of two young men. It is so much more than that. I'm saying it as a gay man - I'm sick of boring dramas. Also, this is a movie that is for everyone - not just gays, or heterosexuals, or Serbs/Croatians/Albanians/etc. EVERYONE should see this.

I rarely like movies from the Balkans. Being a Bulgarian, I've seen plenty which are just a waste of time. This is not. This is among the brightest gems that our countries here (we may be different nationalities, but we are the same in the end, as the movie shows) have ever produced.

Of course, the plot is not 100% realistic - the ex-war-enemies come together too easy, they are made too open-minded and accepting, which is not the case. But as I said, here the message counts and it's great and it's given in a splendid way.

I can only home that some day someone from my country produces a movie as good and meaningful as this one. If you are from Eastern Europe - watch this. You already know this world, the movie will simply expand your mind a little more. If you are not from this part of the world - watch it anyway and see how our people think and live and how they deal with gay themes. The characters are clichéd for a purpose - to represent how different ordinary people from the society think and react. In that it succeeds brilliantly.

If not for the meaningful message, watch it for the comedy and the amazing actors. Kudos to everyone involved for acting so well, so humanly and so different from what the communist acting schools have taught us :)
