Ying zhao tie bu shan (1977)
Best Kung Fu movie of the 1970s era, lol :)
This has to be the Best martial arts/ Kung Fu movie of the era! It can be hard to follow though so you must pay attention. There are 3 major guys who look alike and have similar sounding names even and then there are 2, 3 or 4 old master types who all look identical and in fact 2 of them are brothers in the film... LOL. I have to rewatch it of course to see if I have exaggerated too much for this review but as far as bad guys go, this bad master is one of the toughest I've seen in these kinds of movies. There are many fight scenes and most of the fighting is pretty realistic if you can suspend your disbelief of course and all are well choreographed.
The Cokeville Miracle (2015)
The Movie athes hate Because it's a TRUE account of God's Intervention
No athe will like this movie because it will shake his personal belief about God to his core. Worse, these athes will rate the movie poorly to discourage others from seeing it and hearing the Truth when in fact, if the movie was fictional, it is still a well made movie. Definitely not a B movie! There are no A-listers but still good acting and writing. But the movie is NOT fiction, it is a true story so I recommend all believers in God and others who are spiritual to see this movie. It will reaffirm your beliefs or previous beliefs if you've lost hope or experienced any doubts about God. Just knowing the things revealed in this movie are for real will give you hope and restore your Faith. In this evil world around us, we need all the hope we can get!
Five Fingers (2006)
Every Tourist's Worst Nightmare
I only gave this movie an 8 because it was just a hair too slow paced. Just a hair though, in my opinion. The writing/the concepts were first rate. The performances of the three main actors, Fishburne, Torres and Phillipe were the best of their careers probably. I was totally convinced they were who their characters were supposed to be. They owned their respective roles so any fan of these three will love this work.
This 2006 genre movie was preceded by the 1976 "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman and itself preceded one of my favorite movies, the 2010 "Unthinkable" with Samuel L. Jackson and Carrie Ann Moss. If you liked either of those two you will like this one also.
Anyone who's never traveled to a third world or Muslim or Arabic country before will have no trouble believing that this is exactly what could happen to an American or European tourist etc. That's part of what makes this movie so real. It's believable.
Miss Potter (2006)
Briallant and Realistic Zellweger Performance
Renee Zellweger owns this role! Her interpretation, look and acting of Beatrix Potter, is nothing less than spectacular. Her portrayal of the real Miss Potter is exactly what you'd imagine the author of Peter Rabbit to be. I'd be amazed if the real Miss Potter was any different and would really love to know how accurately she was in fact written and portrayed.
A bonus is also that this is a period piece that seemed very accurate and my mother pointed out the curlers in young Beatrix's hair explaining that her mother used to do that to her when she was a young girl.
Perfect Stranger (2007)
Great under-rated movie!
Boy what a find! Critics only rated the movie 5-6 but what were they thinking? I gave it a 10 just because it's overall average rating was so undeservedly low. I've never done that before but what an injustice to the writers for a 9-ish performance. Halle has never been more beautiful, wow! She also did a 10 performance I thought. The only reason I gave the writers 8-9... is the computer hacking guy's skills were too unrealistic; if he's so good what's he doing working for a newspaper etc? And the online interactions were a little confusing to me but I was able to overlook all of that and enjoyed the movie. I got it cheap as it's so old now and and I don't know anyone who would regret watching it and quite the opposite. It's a minimum of an 8 and should be rated even higher in my opinion. Halles undercover roles to me were very convincing. I could actually see her doing those roles in real life...
The Insanity of God (2016)
A tear jerking Christian epic for the 21st Century
This is a true story told in a documentary style about a real life, modern day missionary and his wife who venture out to places missionaries will not usually go. He actually entered into a live war zone in a Muslim country and never hid his Christianity. Nik Ripkin is a trail blazer who sought to answer God's calling and bring the Word of Jesus to the most desperate places on earth. The film reveals unspeakable human atrocities and torture and death to those whose only crime was believing in Jesus Christ. The shocking part of all of this is that it is actually happening today, in China and Russia, let alone Muslim countries in Africa. Many Americans are not aware of any of this. Christians in America have no clue of the life of ease they have as compared to Christians around the world who are tortured, imprisoned and even killed, for simply believing in Christ. I urge all who see this movie to also read the book of the same title it is based on. It is one of the most powerful books I've ever read!
Quantico (2015)
Best writer since BSG or LOST
I didn't think I'd even like the show but somehow expected/hoped it would be like or as good as "Pensacola" (about the Air-Force Academy...) was.
To my utter surprise and amazement the pilot far exceeded my expectations. Although I usually hate flashbacks in movies etc, their use here is done very well. I like intricate writing and plot twists and to be shocked by things I've never seen coming and this show delivers them all. My favorite TV show of all time is Battle Star Galactica and then LOST. It was the writing that made those shows great and I can see that kind of talent here. I can only hope the writer(s) can keep it up for the entire season.
Aftermath (2014)
Reality TV-ish film reminiscent of the TV movie "The Day After"
I probably should of rated this movie an 8 instead of a seven but it wasn't an "A" movie ("A" movies start at an 8 rating for me or else they're not "A" movies... ) If you, as well as I, love: B-movies, independent films, low-budget movies, documentaries/docu-dramas and of course the "post-apocalyptic" genre then you will like this movie. It has a reality TV feel to it and is along the lines of the made for TV movie "The Day After" but with a smaller cast and budget etc.
I've been watching the "Doomsday Prepper" shows on TV for the past season or so and know much about the survival situation that is to come after the bombs drop, esp now with us letting Iran get nukes and ICBM missiles to deliver them, in the next 5-10 years (as of 7-14-2015) and only a fool or extreme optimist can't see this coming. Well this movie has one leader who sort of knows some of the the things needed to survive at least the initial onslaught...
By watching this movie I've learned that I'm not as prepared as I thought I was. I learned various things about not only vulnerabilities to exposure but how essential medical supplies and training are.
This movie should be a wake up call for civilians to learn about how to survive large scale disasters. It's more a "warn-a-mentary" than an entertainment pill.
Day of Wrath (2006)
Good Post-Jewish Spanish exile period piece during the Inquisition
The Jester character was very talented, although his was a small bit part I felt he deserves an honorable mention for his performance and also the writer who created this unique character did something cool that I've never seen before; a new twist on the Jesters range, if you will (for lack of a better way to express it)...
Christopher Lambert did a superb job for his character as it was written. His char was tough and realistic but not Superman which means he didn't have it easy...
The backdrop of this fictional story takes place after the Jews were driven out of Spain. Having previously read the historical novel "By Fire, By Water" I was already familiar with the time period and true events that took place concerning the Jewish exile from Spain and so I understood this movie better than the person I watched it with (although you don't need to know this)
The scenery and costumes were period pieces that added a lot to the flavor of the movie but the best part is the well conceived plot and the twists and secrets that aren't revealed so easily...
