Smallville (2001)
Started off good but gone downhill in the end!
In regards to the show "Smallville" it was a case of having a show off to a good start then as time passes the show slowly loses it's potentials by jumping the shark more than a few times where it just gone downhill all the way up to the final season, aleast to my prospective.
If I recall the premise of the show suppose to involve a teenage Clark Kent discovering his powers and where he's is really from while in the process dealing with typical & not-so-typical issues/troubles through out his teen years as he slowly start his journey to become the future hero that he will be destined to be along with the trials that he has to endure on the way.
On a personal note I watch the show from the start of season 1 all the way to the end of season 7 and there's good reasons why I stop watching before the last three seasons came along.
I'll start with some good parts of the show... Clark discover/develops a new power in almost every season. Clark & Lex started off as friends before becoming future enemies. Clark slowly discovering/learning his Kryptonian heritage. Clarks learns to be a hero and uses his powers for good before taking on the mantle.
Now here are some bad parts of the show (One's the made me stop watching)... The villain of the week routine, in a Superman origin show. Kryptonite effects people differently and gives them different powers depending on how the were exposed. Supporting characters frequently gets victimize by the villain of the week (While civilians also get killed by them). Too many Homages to films that were release around the time of the show's run (And a few films that came years before then) such as "The Fast and the Furious", "Hocus Pocus", "Face Off", "Twilight", "Saw", "The Bourne Identity" and even "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (In a Superman origin show). Meeting Justice League members before taking on the mantle (Bruce Wayne/Batman NOT being one of them). Meeting famous rogues gallery also before taking on the mantle. Clark already being Superman minus the costume. Jor-El (Aleast his A.I. anyways) being portray as somewhat antagonistic. Lois presented as a punching bag in a number of episodes. Clark & Lois engage before Clark toke on the mantle. Some plot moments from episodes are left unresolved. Almost every episode is center on action/suspense rather than the story (Probably just for the sake of gaining interest).
I think this pretty much covers everything I feel towards "Smallville" and while I do acknowledge as well as appreciate what the show is trying to be and what it did to open the door for future DC based shows I believe that it should have stick to it's original premises through out it's run rather than going beyond that not to mention alter the Superman mythos from what was originally viewed or known for. Which was something that "Smallville" definitely blow it for me.
While I don't recommended it to any hardcore Superman fans/DC Comics fans but they are still feel free to experience it themselves but just to see it as a somewhat of an else-world version of the Superman mythos rather than a unique interpretation of it.
Step by Step (1991)
Not THE worst but one of the worst!
Not sure where to even begin but I'll try to get right down to it and point out some, if not all of the details of why this is my least favorite of one of ABC's former sitcoms during the once lived TGIF lineup. But also to finally get the opportunity to let out the frustration that I had been building up in my system for so long and to finally let it out.
First off this show is nothing short then a clicheish modern style "Brady Bunch" parody that does not (Or ever) even deliver. It's basically a sitcom (Or aleast is trying to be one) that is trying to be funny (Which is saying a lot) but to no avail. Whatever the show display something that is supposively funny it ends up being something that is not only absolutely not funny but just something that ends up being nothing more than classless, distasteful and just downright obnoxious not to mention annoying. Can't possibly imagine anyone in the live audience even with only limited amount of common sense or a severely short amount of an attention span would laugh at the supposive jokes or even thought they were even funny.
Plus the show has practically in almost every episode through all seven seasons or just the entirety of the whole series in general is nothing more than an insult fest and it's nearly impossible to find let alone, watch through an episode without hearing a line that relates to insults, name-callings, berations, and put-downs that got so overly done it instantly becomes redundant, again... Going back to not mentioning it being annoying.
But the show's biggest flaw of all was it's stereotypical nature that is especially in regards to the characters. The plot of the series or what was revealed in the pilot episode is two single parents each of them with three kids of their own and when they tie the knot without any of their kids having any knowledge of it things get chaotic real fast much to the UNDISMAYED to the parents.
And here are the main cast in stereotypical order:
Frank Lambert: An assertive joe kind of guy
Carol Foster: An enabling and somewhat passive type of woman
The Foster/Lambert kids:
Diana Foster: An overachieving feminine activist of some-sort
Karen Foster: A materialistic drama queen
Mark Foster: The socially awkward nerd
J.T. Lambert: The fun loving slacker
Al Lambert: The tomboyish tough girl/bitch
Brenden Lambert: The carefree type (I think)
Lily Foster Lambert: The cute kid and the youngest
Supportive cast:
Cody Lambert: The valley dude type and the supposive "Steve Urkle" of the show
Jake Gordon: The goofballish short lived replacement for Cody
Jean-Luc Rieupeyroux: Some french guy
But they are other flaws this show consist on such as trying to explore, borrow elements and living up to the decade the show was aired in it's entirety which happens to be the 90's in the most clicheish fashion possible. Even trying so hard (Apparently to no avail) to be like other dysfunctional family style sitcoms during that time such as "The Simpsons" and "Married, with Children". And like other sitcoms the show even try to dwell on everyday issues that actually end with moral lessons but inspite of the best attentions those moral lessons are quickly forgotten within the next episode along with those same moral lessons being repeatedly established in later episodes. In other words... An episode give a moral lesson for the characters to learn from and after learning from that lesson it becomes forgotten then in later episodes that process is repeated over.
Oh, and one other thing... I should also mention that (And brace yourself for this one) live action versions of Beavis & Butthead actually show up on this show like three times in a row. Yeah, you may want to let that sink in for a moment after reading that last illustration!
Bottomline... This show is not really worth watching, taking a look at or giving it any chance whats-so-ever is out of the question. It's not only a show that's nothing but a full on insult fest but also a full annoyance that would instantly insult the intelligence of even the most average of viewers.
So there you have it... Take it for what it is!!!
Man of Steel (2013)
The Superman Film We All Been Waiting For!!!
All I can say is this... Finally a kick-ass Superman film (Literally) that lived up to it's hype and everything we wanted & waited to see from! After everything that made "Superman Returns" a let down and a disappointment this one ("Man of Steel") made up for it and help re-establish the Superman franchise again.
Cavill nailed the role to a Tee and he's now officially this generation's Superman. He also shows a conflicted side to the character from his upbringings to his status as a protector/savior. Adams's portrayal of Lois was persistent, clever, proactive and if I dare say... An improvement to her past portrayals in films. Shannon's portrayal of Zod is exactly how it should be... Zod being a general, for real this time! And with a questionable motive to come to earth not just to look for Clark but also to re-populate the Kryptonian race and have Earth terraformed into New Krypton. Crowe's Jor-El was also proactive in this one as well.
A few other things about the film that got my highest praise was the visuals which I know it has been discussed a lot especially involving Krypton which look like an actual living breathing inhabitable technologically advance planet. And don't get me started with the overly done action/battle scenes which was more than enough to make up for everything that past "Superman" films was lacking and what we have seen in the modern media.
The only few things about the film that rub me the wrong way was the logics behind Kryptonian technology which was at least less complicated than the Kryptonian tech from the Donner films. Jonathan Kent's death even though I kinda wish he was kept alive aleast until in upcoming sequels but on the other hand it was understandable since Jonathan actually choose this path just for sake of preserving Clark's secret. And Zod never says "Kneel Before Zod" but I guess we all can't get everything!
And as for the critics who bashed the film simply because of... Having too much action, being too sci-fi-ish, Superman reluctantly killing Zod and those "Lacking Character Development" statements (Which I call bulls**t on that one) they're either Donnerites, Marvelites, Superman haters or just down right apologists who still think "Superman Returns" is the better movie. (Rolling Eyes) I say F**k them all!!!
To add my own verdict for "Man of Steel" I'll give it my highest score, 10 out of 10 with hands down! And huge props to Zack Snyder and co.
Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z (2006)
A disappointing adaptation of the original
When I heard that PPG was going to be turn into an anime I was like "Oh hell yeah!!!" cause I could already imagine what a PPG anime would have been like and how cool it would be compare to the original show but after the show premiered and after 26 episodes into it my enthusiasm had went from skepticism to disappointment because honestly... PPGZ isn't what I imagined nor was I expecting as an anime style PPG series.
Compare to the original this version is nothing short but childish, ridicules, illogical and well, once again... Disappointing! It ignores the traits & essence that made the original series great in the first place to the point that the show was more on comedy and less on action rather than being a perfect balance of both as the original show. For the main characters themselves, they were portrayed very different than the original counterparts in terms of characteristics/personalities not to mention they came off as being less powerful than their original counterparts.
I highly wouldn't recommend this to anyone who is a hardcore fan of the PPG, it won't be worth the look! In edition, I would advise to just stick with the original show because this one will only make the one that it is loosely based on look much better in comparison.
Superman Returns (2006)
Seriously Singer why, why you screw this up?
After 19 years of development hell with the executives Warner Bros. trying to find a director to bring Superman back to the big screen they hired director Bryan Singer after his previous approach with another comic-based-film franchise "X-Men" the execs of Warner Bros. thought Superman was in good hands, but little do they and us viewers & fans know... They were wrong!!! With Bryan Singer in the director's chair this is what we got for a "Superman" film...
Being a modern/updated rehash of "Superman: The Movie".
This somehow take place after "Superman II".
The Supersuit design and color scheme looks off.
Superman having a illegitimate son.
Superman being a stalker and a dead beat dad.
Lex Luthor plans the same real estate scheme, except with Kryptonian technology and replacing most of the Unitied States.
No super powered villains.
No epic or climatic battle through out the film.
Loop holes that defies logics: Nobody can tell Clark Kent arrive around the same time as Superman indicating that their two of the same, Lois being pregnant and Lex finding the Fortress of Solitude after Superman reverse time again and destroys the FOS earlier then in "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut", Superman lifting up a crystallize island made out of Kryptonite.
With all of this being said this is not what I or any viewer & fan wanted to see in a Superman film. If Bryan Singer wanted to do a continuation after "Superman II" then he should have done it in a way that Richard Donner could have done it... Have the film look, feel & sound like the first two films, have actors who can look and portray the characters just like the original actors did, further the storyline that is complete different & original and introduce another comic book villain into the mix.
As much as I respect Bryan Singer as a film director he just wasen't right for a "Superman" film and should've rebooted the whole franchise from scratch but unfortunately we viewers & fans will have to wait aleast another five years or so until we get another proper "Superman" film that starts itself over and be done right just as it should have done in the first place when this film was green lighted.
Thanks a lot Singer!!!
The Dark Knight (2008)
"The Dark Knight" Delivers!!!
Wow!!! That's pretty much my reaction towards this film... Wow!!! I knew the film has been highly anticipated but I didn't know the film would live up to it's anticipation! As a hardcore Batman fan there's no way I cannot adore what has been presented in this film. The film definitely continuate where "Batman Begins" leaves off.
The Joker was almost exactly the way he should be portrayed, as a calculating, murderous, psychopath all thanks to the late Heath Ledger, (God bless his soul) it's a shame that this would be his final film and ironically this was the first film I seen him played in. No one thought that Heath Ledger will top Jack Nickelson's portrayal, but eventually in the end... He prove them wrong!
Hervey Dent/Two-Face was finally portrayed in a way he was meant to be portrayed as far as dignity goes, from a district attorney fighting for peace for Gothem to a disfigured vigilante in a way that you'll almost feel sorry for him!
Batman himself definitely shows that he had the city of Gothem on his shoulders and how he once again struggles to keep the balance of Gothem in tact as well as struggling with his duel identity. There's some twice n' turns in every direction in this film that'll probably won't see coming or expecting (Like the old saying... Expect the unexpected).
It also makes you wonder what the third film will have install and how will they be able to top this one? Oh well, only time will tell! In conclusion, Christopher Nolan hit another big one in his Batman film franchise and wish him the best of luck on the third installment thats if he stays on board of course!
The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002)
You'll won't see animated movies like this one!
When I first heard that this film will be a prequel to the series at first I thought it wasn't a good idea to go with that direction but after seeing the trailers & TV spots I figured that the staff maybe on to something! We already know about the PPG's origin but what this film reveals is something more, it reveals what happens after the girls were born, how everything gets in center staged or come into place and see how the characters that we know develop and becoming who they are today as we know them! Also the film delivers action which made the TV show so appealing to the eyes of viewers! Something we viewers get to see rarely in animated films now-a-days along with the fact that animated films rarely get PG ratings. Practically the film is basically cleverly aimed for both fans & non-fans who don't know PPG since this will give non-fans an introduction of what PPG is all about, kids & adults alike! And as the title says... You'll won't see animated film like this! Not by a long shot you won't!
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
"X-Men: The Last Stand" should have been better!!!
After watching the first two X-Men films (Three times in a row) I had high anticipations for the third installment but after watching the film yesterday I was left in limbo and I still wonder if all that anticipation was worth it! I was hoping the film will be as good as the first two if not better, but it turns out that the film (Aleast in my opinion) is only 50% good and 50% flawed. And Here's why... Spoilers: The only things I like about the film are the action and the special effects! And the storyline involving the Dark Phoenix and the Cure is certainly a good idea (I'll give Brett Ratner credit for that), if only it was well executed than it was already been handled! But here are some things that I don't like and I bet everyone will agree with me on this one... And this involves two characters... Cyclops & Rogue.
First I'll start with Cyclops... First of all Cyclops of all people suppose to be the leader of the X-Men and as mention in the first film Cyclops told the Professor while he's unconscious that he will lead them if anything happens to him. Yet in the third film Professor ask Storm to lead the X-Men and run the institute if anything happens to him and she reminded him that it was suppose to be Cyclop's position but he reminded her that Cyclops toke Jean's supposedly death too hard to even lead the team or run the institute for that matter. Later during the film Cyclops return to Alkali Lake where Jean supposedly died in the second film after hearing her voice in his head and blasted his optic beams in the lake out of frustration which seemingly causes a whirlpool and a burst of light flashes infront of Cyclops and thats where he saw Jean alive and well. Before he embrace himself on to her she ask Cyclops to remove his shades and told him that she can control her powers and his. After he remove them he open his eyes and no optic beams were shot from them and then they kiss which almost look as if Jean was absorbing Cyclop's life energy. When the Professor told Wolverine & Storm to head to Alkali Lake not only they found Jean laying on the ground but Wolverine also found Cyclop's shades floating in the air. Which soon reveal that Jean seemingly killed Cyclops with the power of the Phoenix (But dosen't directly show it).
Now for Rogue... Since the first and second X-Men film Rogue seem to have a relationship with Iceman but in the third it seems Iceman was more interested in Kitty for some reasons and obviously Rogue is feed up with it. Later at the end of the film it's been reveal that Rogue has taken the cure probably because she wanted to have a chance to touch another being without absorbing their life energy. Okay first of all, and it has been mention that this was suppose to be the film where Cyclops has a bigger role than what he had in this one but I'm assuming the fact that the man who plays Cyclops (James Marsden) has scheduling conflicts with the upcoming film "Superman Returns" and if that is the case then maybe the film would of turn out different and a whole lot better than what was already done since this is Cyc (****ing) Lops we're dealing with here, leader of the X-Men for crying out loud!!! The man barley went done with a fight! And another thing... This the same story with Rogue who not only has been appearing in the first & second film but this is suppose to be the film where she become a full fledge member of the X-Men and learning to harness her powers and like Cyclops suppose to be joining in with the others in the final battle and extend her relationship with Iceman but apparently that didn't happen.
Also it would have been fantastic if there was a Colossus & Juggernut fight. However I digress... Everything else negative about the film that I didn't mention are off of my negative list, in other words... There okay, aleast by the film's standards!
In conclusion there are some good parts in the film which probably saved it from being a total failure and the flaws within the film is equally percent as the good parts that were shown and I for one feel that this third installment could have been done a lot better and Brett Ratner have & should stick to the original plan instead bastardizing a particular character just because the actor who plays that particular character was having scheduling problems with another film. Also it's been noted that this film has the shortest running time than the first two films and I feel that this film should be alittle longer, aleast completely two hours! If there's a chance somehow in the future that this film can be redone then I hope it's sooner but in the meantime, I'll stick to the first two films!
Green Lantern (2011)
The "Iron Man" of DC Entertainment!!!
Just came back from the theater and now I'm going to give my two cents on it... After reading the negative reviews that were posted by the mainstream critics (If I should dare call them critics) I actually had my worries but I decided to stick to my guns and go forward with what my opinions were going to be and to my surprise everything turn out exactly as I predicted... And that was the critics were wrong!!! Possibly exaggerated!
The film was as good as it's worth and actually lived up to the trailers and hype that eventually lead the film up to. Of course it did had it's flaws aleast just a few but could easily be over looked and one of the flaws was that it was abit grounded in which I don't find that a bad thing since I for one was expecting it to be since this meant to be the first among many films to come. It's understandable that viewers and fans were expecting a more space opera like theme but I believe we might get more of that in sequels since thats what there for! I for one started enjoying it as the film goes on till I finally come the conclusion that after the end of the movie that I had three words lurking in my head and those words were... I, LIKE, IT!!! The Good: Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, the visuals, the action, the other Lanterns (Abin Sur, Tomar-Re, Kilawog & Sinestro), Hector Hammond & Parallax and the forge of the yellow power ring.
The Flaws: It's slightly grounded, not much screen time for the other Lanterns especially against Parallax and short of a space opera like theme. This is one film that even hardcore fans would & should enjoy and appreciate for what it's worth and the execs of the WB should be patting themselves in the back for actually taking the time from keeping their heads inside their asses to actually taking them out and do what they should have done in the first place and that is giving other DC heroes (Aside from Superman & Batman) their chance to shine on the silver screen and hope the same can be done for other DC heroes to come!
Rambo (2008)
Great homage but could have been better!
Okay, after hearing about the new "Rambo" film before it was released in theaters I was siked up about it! I even watch the last three "Rambo" flicks on youtube.com in order to get pumped for the fourth installment and after the day finally came to watch for what I thought will be the best action film to date with full anticipation and expectation... Well, the film actually delivers but not much, the film was actually good but I expected better and it had a lot of potentials aleast enough from keeping the film from being a complete disappointment and were only a few flaws in the mix. First off I was expecting the film to be on the same level & on the same league as the last two films if not higher but apparently it's just not there! Warning: Spoilers The film puts John Rambo in the heart of Burma where it's been said that the Burmese war has been raged on for 60 years, the Burmese army have abuse their authority gunning down villagers, kidnapping their women & children while killing some of them and warned them that they will be consequences of they defy them! Mostly raping their women and forcing their children to become Burmese soldiers! I including many have expected John Rambo to be put into a different new environment but instead Rambo is once again put into an Asian jungle, but I'm okay with that! Burmese army are so ruthless as they are despicable, in fact you'll hate them so much you'll be urging to see Rambo kill them all! The action was undoubtedly violent and gory at best which was the point of the film! The only flaws were the film felt so rush through but above all there was no climatic style battle not even in the end, instead you just see Rambo using a truck mounted machine gunner most of the time decapitating Burmese soldiers and stabbing then slices the Burmese leader in the end, and that was it!!! We see Rambo get into a Helicopter vs. Helicopter battle in the second installment then a Helicopter vs. Military Tank in the third installment but in the fourth installment instead of something spectacular we get what was stated earlier! Personally I hope this isn't the last we see Sylvester Stallone portraying his role as John Rambo! But still the film is a great homage to the previous "Rambo" films aleast thats all it's good for anyways!
This Is It (2009)
This Is It: As it was visioned!
Just when I was looking forward to see "Michael Jackson's This Is It" there were a few things that I was expecting... We get to see what Michael has planned for his canceled "This Is It" concert and a fully crowded cineplex which enables me to pretend like was act an actual concert with the clapping & applauding at the end of every song but unfortunately I only receive half of what I have anticipated. The cineplex was less crowded than I was expecting and the audience watch through it like any other movie (Although I didn't expect everyone to share my enthusiasm) in which I too had to endure and only applauded after the film! But despite all that it was a good documentary but not a concert film as it been considered or as I hoping for it to turn out to be, it gave us a glimpse of what Michael has been preparing if the concert ever toke place and even show the viewers how much he's more than just an entertainer, it shows he's also a visionary which pretty much makes him for what his fans has seen him for and should be seen for. But still, the experience just reminded me and probably others who have view this even as bittersweet that Michael was truly gone and everything we see is just rehearsal but not what we should and could have been seeing! Non the less, the only good that came from this is aleast we get to see Michael perform one last time and what he have been preparing for what could have been greater than what we have seen so far. Nuff said!!!...
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Score another one for the Web-Slinger!!!
Okay here's my two cents on "Spider-Man 3"... Well, what can I say? "Spider-Man 3" was awesome in fact, the film once again kept itself on the same pace as the first two and at the same time push the boundaries even further! It's no wonder that the "Spider-Man" film franchise is at a all time high! The only gaps I have with the film was that Venom was only shown as the grand finale (Or the main event) but in any case better to have him period than not having him and also the film didn't end with Spide-Man web-slinging like in the previous films but then again it wasen't really necessary anyway! It'll be too much like the 1967 cartoon series, always ending an episode with Spider-Man web-slinging.
And now some highlights from the film...
"Peter fights Harry (In his Goblin persona)"
"Birth of Sandman" "Spidey saves Gwen Stacy" "Spidey fights Sandman"
"Spidey's suits becomes jet black"
"Spidey (In his black suit) fights Sandman again"
"Harry forces Mary-Jane to break up with Peter"
"Peter fights Harry again"
"Peter acts like a pompous jerk"
"Spidey rips the black suit off and onto Eddie Brock"
"Spidey fights Venom & Sandman"
"Spidey & Harry (In his Goblin persona) fights Venom & Sandman"
People originally wonder if this is truly the final "Spider-Man" film and since it did turn out to be so then I guess it really did end with a bang thus Sam Raimi did a great job bringing the "Spider-Man" film franchise to light after a long development hell and hopefully it'll never by forgotten except remembered.
Astro Boy (2009)
Astro Boy delivers! Anime fans rejoice!!!
For those who thought Anime-based-films weren't getting nowhere in the film industry put your frustrations to ease because this film may have finally put an end to the infamous Anime-based-film curse especially after all the mediocre and even dreadful treatments we had to endure like "Speed Racer" & "Dragonball Evolution" but this film changes everything people thought about Anime-based-film... It was actually good, faithful and appealing as the franchise itself that it was based on! The film followed closely with the moral lessons that Osamu Tezuka (Astro Boy series creator) tried to exploit in the manga series as well as in multiple anime series involving prejudisim between humans & robots along with civilians who resided in Metro City and civilians who resided below the surface. There's also political corruption involve and they all fit perfectly well in the film so far. The humor has abit of a slapstick & typical style but with a modern touch to it which also fits well with the film since thats what the franchise is also best known for. The musical score by John Ottman was truly uplifting and that it also flows well with the film. The ending was kind of similar to how "The Incredibles" ended although they could have come up with something alittle more professional but still, it's all good! In conclusion, "Astro Boy" is what could very well be the first of many upcoming Anime-based-films that could actually be good & traditionally faithful (Aleast hopefully) in a way that film makers should take notice from and recognize it as a fine example of what an Anime-based-film should be. One thing is for sure is if only Osamu Tezuka lived long enough to see this film, for he would of have been so proud!
