House of the Dragon (2022)
Grows better for every episode
Paddy Considine is more than you can hope for. What an actor! The art of playing a character like this is... just extraordinary. Episode 8 was just fantastic from his part. Hats of, kudos, I am so impressed.
That said, I must also say that the show started of kind of slow and also felt kind of like a summary of the books. But it really took off during the last episodes, and I get why the first couple of episodes were kind of necessary. Each episode also has something beautiful or horrible. A truly great scene is when Rhanenyra rides her dragon trough the mist at Dragonstone. And in ep 8 the supper scene is perfect.
Ozark (2017)
1 & 2 near perfect, S3 unwatchable.
Let's just say that the writers of season 3 walked into every conceivable trap. And destroyed the characters.
Incoherent plot, slow pace for no reason. Wendy's annoying brother (that kind of makes her into the girl with the annoying brother in Love Actually). And the simple fact that they had no better ideas for the script, than falling into the old "Let's make the heroes enemies" trap.
A huge disappointment.
Final Space (2018)
Lovely first season. Second not so much.
First season... perfect. Great story, even better charachter development. Everyone is of importance to the story.
Second season though... my guess is they hired a group of writers that tried to monetize on what they identify as the most liked elements of first season. The sentimental stuff. Unsurprisingly they fail, as they have no real understanding for what makes these bits good as parts of the first season's story. It ends up with two things:
1 instead of good characters with real use for the story to develop, we get a whole bunch of people acting as a group, often just standing around when things happen.
2 A weak and fragmented story, where all the characters (for wich are never given any reason to care for) are only given made up, and not backed up, stories meant to make you feel for their lack of families.
It really reminds of what happened to to "Guardians of the galaxy".
But with this said, season one is very, very, good.
Son of Zorn (2016)
Pure genious
The pitch for this must have been absolutely fantastic. For a producer to buy a mix between sitcom and 80s Masters of the Universe... It doesn't really sound like a good idea. But it is. I am really bummed out it got cancelled.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Who wrote this!?
This kind of cringe-comedy doesn't do it for me. Neither does loud and annoying behaviour. Furthermore, I don't think being pathetic or incompetent or unlikable in general can be labelled satire. It's really rather bad writing and lack of originality. It reminds me of ad agencies falling flat when trying to write funny tv commercials.
Too bad, because mr Laurie is brilliant.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Beautiful but mindless
Bad script. Endless action cliches. The captain repairs the ship by kicking it as hard as he can. Really poor character development.
And all of this is a real pity, since the whole thing looks fantastic, and the acting is quite solid. How about hiring good writers? That couldn't be all that expensive, or what?
World War Z (2013)
Let down.
Apparently Max Brooks read "An oral history of the second world war" and was really taken by the atmosphere in it. And I must say that he was really successful in capturing it -I haven't read it, but I still get exactly what he means, from reading his "World War Z, an oral history of the zombie war".
I didn't think much of Brook's book, but a friend made me read it. I was blown away. I was out sailing by myself for a week, and I got really hooked. And, to be honest, a little scared, alone in my little boat, in the dark scerries of the swedish archipelago. Late august. Dark nights.
Rarely have I wished for a book to be rendered as a movie. But this time I did. And the only thing I have to say about the film in this review is that it's a massive let down. It's got nothing of that fantastic atmosphere. It is a missed opportunity. I hope some day a good crew will turn it into a tv-series instead.
The movie "World War Z" has got nothing to do with the book, and as such it's watchable, but also forgettable.
Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie (1995)
Haunting
Well, if you are looking for a thorough history lesson, this isn't it. This movie focuses more upon footage, music, the scare. And that's not a bad thing. I've had a life long obsession with the bomb and I'm already quite familiar with its history and technicalities. The footage along with the terrifyingly brilliant and suggestive music is, with a lack of better words, kind of a horrifying... treat. Each blast resembles death trying to make itself pretty.
If you want to educate yourself on the bomb, this movie makes a good trilogy together with "The bomb" (Rushmore DeNooyer 2017) and "World's biggest bomb" (Secrets of the dead, Andy Webb).
Ice Road Truckers (2007)
Unbelievably unexciting
There is absolutely no existing reason known to man to watch this. Why History Channel keeps airing this is beyond me. Typically it revolves around some trucker who drives his vehicle while saying "I'm so scared" in countless verbal variations. Maybe this is very interesting to some, but I really don't get it. Equal shows like Deadliest Catch at least have some pay-off when you get to see the catch. But here? Nothing. It's basically promoted as a show about going down dramatically through the ice. But they never do. So if you really want to see trucks disappearing through a hole in the arctic ice, this is not it. Then it's the music. Fact: dull moments don't become exiting just because you put horror/action-movie music on them. I get that it's inexpensive to produce programs like this. But that's all there is to it, really. And that it's boring. To the point that people with average brain capacity get offended. Please excuse my bad English, I'm angry and Swedish.
Kill List (2011)
No, no.
This is not in any way good. I simply have no idea where those great reviews come from. The gore isn't explicit enough to be scary in it self. Masks of straw, ku klux klan-like masquerades in the woods... no. With all the rubbish preceding it, not even the scene in the sewers is scary. And I don't care about who dies or who lives. The "twist" in the end is predictable.
The acting is pretty good. But that doesn't save the lousy script. Whoever wrote it should be ashamed in the same way the guy who wrote "Valhalla Rising" probably is by now.
And: scary music isn't enough. In this movie it's more like... cheating.
This really is a waste of time. Trust me.
Pardon my English, I'm from Sweden.
Sons of Anarchy (2008)
Telling stories...
...isn't easy. But this one is certainly written by well payed pro's and... you simply have to be incredibly stupid to buy it.
The protagonist -who I guess is supposed to be the show's hero- is totally played by his mom, his wife and his stepfather (and more). To "protect him" (probably uttered a 100 times by Gemma) from certain hurtful truths. It makes him look half brain dead. He shouldn't notice that everyone is lying to him? And the lies also causes dozens of deaths, but that doesn't seem to bother the liars. All to "protect" this and that. Bottomless plot holes are covered with "let's keep it a secret to protect" whatever.
And then there's the ongoing slaughter of... I don't know how many people. Preferrably by the use of heavy artillery and nuclear warheads. In broad daylight. And they never really get caught.
Also it almost hurts to see twenty+ gangsters firing away at each other with assault rifles and hitting nothing but air. From 15 feet away.
Last, but not least, is the inconsequences. The characters, and especially Gemma, tends to change views from episode to episode. Maybe it's supposed to look like she has a very clever hidden agenda, but I doubt it. It bums me out anyhow.
No, the script isn't good. But the show's still watchable. It looks good, and some of the scenes are really well made and well written.
Pardon my terrible English, I'm from Sweden.
EDIT: I'm sorry but I really have to add a couple of things: 1 The acting is really good 2 The characters are truly lovable 3 The directing is top notch 4 The music i well chosen. Especially "Los Tiempos van Cambiando" (cover of Dylan's "Times are a changing").
I mean: I actually did enjoy the show. The bad script just made me overly negative to the whole thing. But my rating (4/10) still stands. A great TV-series should be well written as well. Not just well produced.
