Lovestruck: The Musical (2013)
Rather Okay Movie
I rather enjoyed this movie. Sure, the plot's predictable, but the songs that they choose fit the scenes so well that it kinda makes up for it. With that being said, I think they sort of overdid the songs they had in the movie; sure, the performances were great, but they literally had a song in almost EVERY SCENE, which kind of bogged down the movie. But the part with the dad turning young was fun, especially the dance her and the mom do to Usher's DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love; it's probably the best part of the movie. All in all, it was a decent and kinda cute movie, but would probably have been better off as a Broadway musical. Just saying.
Beautiful Creatures (2013)
Very Excellent Movie; Definitely not the Book
Okay, for starters, this review is for people who have read the book and wish to see the movie. Secondly, I love most book-to-movie adaptations without reason, mainly because I just think that it's awesome to see the authors' works play out visually. Now, there are some exceptions (cough-Percy Jackson-cough)that just made me absolutely furious, but Beautiful Creatures is an amazing movie. And that's just it. It's not the book, it's an adaptation of the book's story. Sure, they've changed things around from the book, the few most alarming being that they revealed that Mrs. Lincoln was Sarafine very early on (halfway through the movie), Reece, Ryan, and Boo, and Ethan's dads' absences from the story, skipping the winter formal scene, Genevieve killing Ethan Carter Wate instead of having him die from the spell not working, and that Amma was combined with Marian to save not only money but to build a stronger character. Oh, and Lena cast a memory charm on Ethan to make him forget that he ever met Lena, therefore changing how the ending played out. If you want to find out how the ending was different yourself, do not read on, but if you want to find out how it's different, read on. So, Ethan shows up with Link at the battle reenactment (he still doesn't remember Lena) and he and Link pretend to shoot each other so they can leave the reenactment and go home. Only Ridley put a bullet in Link's gun instead of blanks and Ethan is shot in the chest, enraging Lena and leading her to knock Link unconscious when she arrives soon after. Then Mrs. Lincoln/Sarafine arrives soon after and tries to convince her to turn dark. But Macon shows up and puts himself in Ethan's place to end Genevieve's curse, his last words to Lena being "Claim yourself." Realizing her destiny, Lena lets Ridley run and expels Sarafine from Mrs. Lincoln's body. Then Larkin shows up, revealing to Lena that Macon said that it was the only way and that he pretended to be Macon so that the real Macon at Lena's party could let Ethan take Macon's place. (Note: He is never revealed to be a dark Caster in this movie; they might have saved it for future installments in the series) Then, six months later, Ethan and Link stop at the library to visit Amma before they go on a college road trip and Ethan meets Lena at the library, still not remembering anything that's happened. Then, as he and Link drive away, he notices the Gatlin welcome/goodbye sign that Lena burned before accidentally, and his memory comes back to him. He stops the car and gets out of it, yelling Lena's name. All the way back at the library, Lena looks up in acknowledgement. So, as a movie, it was great. My parents came see it with me and they loved it, and my mom even read the book! So, if you really want to go see an amazing movie, go see Beautiful Creatures. If you liked the book and are willing to see the movie, go see it. If you want to see and exact facsimile of the movie, get real; there are no movies out there that are completely like their source material, even the ones that are over three hours long.
