Planet Terror (2007)
fairy tale and pure garbage
Mr Rodrigues, please remove thyself from the movie business, you are ruining good film for reasons i will never comprehend, nor do i wish to, shame on you Quentin for even putting your name on this rubbish, this movie is a series of fragmented violence of blood and pure gore, how do the Weinstien sleep at night, if there was a minus score, i would willingly and gleefully give it, and by the average rating, i would suggest that your viewers get a real brain, omg, this movie and i use that term loosely, is a perfect example of the American healthcare systems, poor bastards, i am now willing to concede under protest that No Country For Old Men is a spectacle compared to this screwed up offering, Robert, please do us all a favour and squeeze a couple of rounds in thy mouth, quickly oh one last word, i do not need an American spelling count as an error, bloody savages!
Shane (1953)
so sad this movie is rated so low
each time i review the latest leaders in great movies, Shane keep sliding into the sunset, who in their right mind could possibly do this, this epic western has it all, landscape, acting, realism, set decorations, cinematography, sets, you name it, this one delivers it all, i find it so sad, that the younger people cannot appreciate a true classic, and keep supporting the cynical works of Tarentino, and The Coen boys, i guess my opinion does not matter, after all, i am well over 30, so what do i know eh? This movie has a lot more substance than the remakes and the silly rubbish that is being made, and we call this progress? God help us all,and one might want to check out all the fickle changes in the ratings, what a crock, pay attention to the movie, and stop being a simple witness at these quality movies, i simply do not understand, but then again, that is only my humble opinion, YIKES!
The Prestige (2006)
a mind bender
Christoper Nolan impressed me with Batman Begins, and more so with this movie,i believe we have a new great director and writer, not to mention the outstanding talents of Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, needless to say,MIchael Caine and David Bowie turn in outstanding performances,Mr. Nolan,I salute you,i will be thrilled to see real movie making for a change, excellent.i was just informed that my comment is not long enough,i do not know what else to say, enjoyment of this movie and the twisting plots and surprises are truly mind benders, and i forgot to mention the lovely Scarlett Johanson,i would walk on 10 miles of broken glass to give her a hug,she is a visual delight in every sense of the word.On a technical note, the editing and cinematography were excellent, and the script is something to behold, keep up the good work Mr.Nolan and no doubt there is a bright star shining for Christian Bale,he has been outstanding since the Spielberg classic,Empire of The Sun,i love the way he toys with accents,a great deal of talent there
Top of the Food Chain (1999)
i believe in torture
this is not a comedy, this is not a spoof, whoever titles it as that should have corrective brain surgery asap, this is without a doubt a movie that was shot in the running time, with no script whatsoever, why i am wasting so many words on this turkey is beyond me,oh my god people, this rating i see is so sad,Slither was funny, but this amateur home shot movie is an insult to even amateurs, and this movie proves beyond a doubt, that man has not stepped on the moon in light of this turkey, good lord you people are terribly bored or lacking in oxygen,i wish there was a rating below 1,this rating owes us a few points,a spoof? on what?
Don Juan DeMarco (1994)
once in a thousand movies
with all the rubbish that flashes on the screen these days, what more can one say about such a refreshing dorky concept,it lightens and brightens the day,it gives us all hope that love is never ending and spontaneous and precious, with that type of premise, how could one not want to take a ride in fantasy? this movie was well paced and totally charming, needless to say why Mr.Depp has become so popular and to play beside Brando and pull it off is another accomplishment on its own,see this movie, your heart and soul will thank you,it is hard to believe that such a harmless fantasy can be wrong, and the humour that follows with each situation is magic to the eyes and ears,i thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted and cheerful story, and the music seems to fill the seams very well and often, corny? perhaps, but nevertheless this movie has a soul and fills the spirits with hope and affection,i love this movie,we should all take a break from the everyday heart pounding pace we set and escape for a little bit,and this movie accomplishes all that,so,i am sentimental, sue me already!!!!!!!!!!!!
Slither (2006)
just pure fun and no pretense
I saw this movie by accident, and was totally surprised by the flow of the movie,it keeps your attention very well and manages to mix in timely and very funny scenes and quotes, good acting all around considering the subject matter, profanity is done with style and timing,a good time for all,and it is hard to conceive anyone taking this movie too seriously, considering the subject matter, one good thing which makes it work, the movie does not take itself too seriously, which is why it moves along so well, and perfect pacing with the subject matter,i have not had a good laugh in a long time, but this one hits home, most sci-fi's take themselves far too serious, pure entertainment which is the name of the game, epics are OK,and a nice change from the glitzy special effects far too prominent in far too many movies, has the good sense to laugh at itself throughout, and the mayor is a hoot
The Godfather (1972)
Glamorizing Scum and Vermon
For certain,my review will be regarded with great disdain. Before I viewed the movie,I read the book by Mario Puzo. The similarities are right on target.Coppolla accurately conveyed the book to cinema in an engrossing style, however,I honestly believe that these bigger than Life characters were more suited for a documentary. The movie itself in a technical sense is excellent, but It's stature is overstated in the archives of movie history. The Mafia, never referenced,oh really,do we really have to struggle with this enigma,in light of the fact that Michael goes to Sicily,to hide from u.s.authorities,and the mob,He kind of got a surprise there.I find the adoration of the Don,Brando to be sickening and offensive. He is displayed as an arbritator of honesty and intergrity,a model to admire? Did this group forget the concept about when in Rome.A unique culture can effectively be blended into any society, providing they play by the rules of their host country. It is amazing to me,that such a small island nation, could have such a dominating influence or admiration in our western culture. Moreover, these thugs have done absolutely nothing in aid of their native home of Sicily, such a charming snake pit that has still not joined the 19th century. We now see a myriad of Mafias all over the world. If this is to be put in proper context,it is troubling to me,that we adorn and admire such cultures.I find the tributes to be troubling, not just in the movie making sense, but in it's implications to family values, and morality.I'm certain that the commercial revenues from this movie, could have assisted areas of the world that do not enjoy the privileges of our generation. On the movie again,I found the soundtrack beautiful, however, certainly a contradiction to the henous overtones and behaviour of the plot line and characters. There is even some morbid undertones that express love and loyalty. The only emotion I detected here was greed,violence,self-gratification,hideous marriages. The most contempt is explored in this group's demands for respect, that is an oxymoron. The mindset of this movie has caught up with today's corporate mentality of greed and power.Did this movie require more sequels,so that we could start reading a book from the last page and work our way to the beginning,Like "Memento".Your user ratings are engulfed with shallow praise for barbaric cultures. After this movie was released, every clown italian or not,was emulating the behaviour of these thugs,as if to pontificate their significance in the real world. There are a ton of movies past and present, that are more significant and artistic.I see no artistry in corruption,I only see an endorsement of bizzare behavious fabricated on a shallow premise.Whatever happened to love and sensibility? Are we compelled to view the ugliness and darker sides of our nature, and,if so,there is indeed no hope for future generations.I guess I will have to check under my hood every morning now, well that kind of say's it all!!
The Man in the Glass Booth (1975)
One of the most intense movies of all time
This 1975 production caught me off guard. The only reason I took it in was because of Maximillian Schell.Well let me tell you,WOW!! I thought Max was deserving of his oscar for Judgement at Nuremberg in spite of the intense competition that year. This is a movie that starts slowly, and your taken on a ride with Mr.Goldman,a surviving jew from the holocaust, who,is haunted by the stigma of why he survived, and his cynical outlook,on lack of action from the jews against the nazi inquisition, and absence of meaningful resistance. He uses mixed metaphors that his associates don't understand, because of his lack clearly explaining his torment. He delivers one liners, that no one knows what he
is referring to,and keeps this a dark secret, which,he has a morbid museum that is restricted to himself only. The intellect and knowledge of this rich developer is astounding. He expresses everything in outrageous terms, which forms part of his gregarious and likeable personality.Because of the death of his father in the camps,he feels responsible, and also blames the jews themselves, for this outrage to have happened.Max was nominated for this movie, which was not well distributed,in spite of this, his performance is stunning, captivating, and intensive. His humour is chillingly funny.Max gives a whole new outlook on analysis on every conceivable subject.During the trial stage, which he perpetuated,he defends himself in a unique way.He defends his admiration of Hitler, and, his contempt for the jewish people, who went away like sheep. His impersonation of Hitler,is astonishing and riveting. He nails down the body language to a chilling crescendo. He has set himself up as a colonel from the concentration camp,to mock and persecute his fellow jews for their lack of protest. The conclusion of this work by Robert Shaw, was certainly not predictable,I will not give it away.If you like razor sharp scripts and an incredible performance by Schell, this is a must see!!This movie is not for everyone,as the plot is rather complicated, perplexing and confined to 3 sets.Arthur Hiller directed this gem with solid fortitude and conviction. It is unfortunate that the present edited copy, not widely available, was changed, because the original I viewed was flawless.Mr.Shaw who we remember as Quint,in JAWS,retracted his name from the screenplay adapted from his play, because of the editing which cut scenes which had enough change to alter the personality of Mr.Goldman.Mr.Schell's Austrian accent has limited his parts, what a shame!!This movie is very cerebral, and is not for every taste. 11 out of 10
Canadian Bacon (1995)
Michael Moore is not Canadian!!!
One of your users indicated that Michael Moore is Canadian,Michael would like to be,but he is not.I find this movie a bit of the wall, but fairly accurate in its assessment of American knowledge of Canada. It seems we know more about our U.S.pals then they know about us. You have to take this movie in it's true context,SATIRE.America for certain are very paranoid about any culture that does not measure up to their concept of morality.I find Mr.Moore did indeed do his homework from both sides of the border.Americans might not find it funny, because of the image of rednecks portrayed by of all things a Canadian! The Canadian CN Tower was used as a symbol of culture shock, considering that the rednecks did not miss one step going up 1200ft.and the Delta force were depleted after a few storeys was tongue in cheek. This movie was a message from Michael, and I think, the message was clear.Insofar as the remarks being conveyed about a war with Canada lasting a very short period of time,I say this,Go for it,you could not possibly win a credible war with a
peaceful nation to the eyes of the world.Aside from the geographical considerations, other nations would take a dim view of such an action. We do not have nuclear weapons? Are you sure? I believe we do possess more than enough resources to accomplish such a simple technology.Look up our research into nuclear technology,it is rather impressiave.Take the movie for what it is,not insulting to us,just very funny. The idea of laughing at ourselves,is the key to not being affected by humour. Relax, the CN Tower is just an engineering feat, not a threat!!
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
winning the hearts and minds
Good movies always have a few memorable scenes that linger in your mind for a long time.Mr.Kubrick has crafted a gem here, every frame has a purpose. In almost every scene from basic training to Vietnam is deliberately crafted with visual and auditory anecdotes. Most of the one-liners scatter across a spectrum of social, military, political tones. The movie is cynical, and,it should be.Kubrick's double illustrations are typical of his unique style.Like his classic, "Paths of Glory",Kubrick enriches the screen with the most memorable scenes that stick in your mind, forever. The relatively unknown cast all deliver under Kubrick's direction. The use of period music is custom made to every scene, and since "200l" nobody times it better. The military lingo and jargon was well thought out and delivered with gusto. After the final conflict,Mr Kubrick sets the tone with the classic closing, the platoon marching away from the scene, with their rendition of the Mickey Mouse theme song.Only Kubrick could be that profound about the message of the futility of war and the lost of innocence.I wish Kubrick was around to do a movie on the Iraq war, circa 2003,It would bring down governments. Give this masterpiece a perfect 10.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)
This is moviemaking on a unique scale, never equalled
Shocked that your database ranks this classic at #23,I suppose that its a generational thing again. This movie gives a whole new definition of perfection.I was fortunate enough to attend the premiere of this movie at the Odeon Carlton.Because the movie was shot in Super 70,the theatre reconfigured the screen. This movie's epic scale is unprecedented. The incredible cinematography, film editing, script by Robert Bolt, brings magic to the screen.Back in 1962,the cynical critics in Toronto,New York, acclaimed this movie with adjectives and metaphors that felt inadequate. The Theatre had to install 8 new pop machines as a result of the massive and overwhelming desert scenes. On a scale of 1 to 10,this movie is a 15.I saw a review that was critical of Peter O'Toole's acting ability,as the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket said,I don't believe you said that.I also watched this movie on the IMAX screen at Ontario Place in Toronto,if you ever want to find faults in a movie, watch it on this 5 storey screen,it shows no flaws.Today, the irony of this movie,is its historical perspective.Does everyone remember the scene after the takeover of Damascus where all the various factions of Arab Leaders were meeting to discuss the resolution of the aftermath.Does this not remind you of Iraq circa 2003? I find it chilling! Most notably was the political wrangling is only too glaringly familiar as we watch the same events unfold in the middle east Anybody who believes there is a solution for changing the mindset of that region is truly naive.Mr.Lean the world of cinema will miss your keen insight and talent.Politics of Hollywood and americana held this movie back in number of Oscars awarded. When you consider the awards given to Titanic, there is no justice.Peter O'Toole was robbed in spite of Gregory Peck's performance in "To Kill a Mockingbird, but alas,Greg is an American. They need to create a new category for movies like Lawrence, because it is indeed,in a league by itself. Thank you Sir David
Shine (1996)
I hope that Spleen from Australia, penal colonies,is a concert pianist if not, your comments are irrelevant
I have watched this movie 3 times, and my opinion has not changed.Scott Hicks is demonstrating a sensitivity that is refreshing in our cynical times. The characters and writing are far superior than most movies of today. A good insight of eccentric artists are difficult to convey to a book or screen.I believe that Scott Hicks, has delivered us to a new level of understanding of human emotion.Insofar as Rach 3 is concerned,The complexity of this music is transformed intentionally by Hicks to illustrate the complexities of this particular piece of music. Most concert pianists, historically have avoided performing this concerto in their repertoire. The movie displays the audio in an obscure manner,to fortify and illustrate the difficulties and challenges of playing it without a flaw.Reviews on this, will support my opinion, since I have witnessed first hand one particular rendition by Arthur Ozolins of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, who is brilliant, but respects the concerto as a formidable one. I think the movie is brilliant, and Mr.Hicks nomination for an oscar would have been awarded if he was american. Mr.Hicks, has given us 2 more gems since.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Considering numbers of reviews, with a lot of confusion, severely underrated
some of the caustic comments I've read, reflect a certain proclivity for the irrelvance of some critics. I cannot imagine anyone, with an adequate I.Q. not admiring the genius of 2 great creators and innovators. the negative comments usually come from watchers who cannot figure out roadrunner plots. They rely very shallow on special effects and do not appreciate a movie, where they have to think. Increasingly, we are seeing a vast difference of opinions between IMDB and AFI list of the greatest movies ever made. the difference is simple, generational and lack of taste. The great masters offered tremendous entertainment over the years, most of the comments are part of our cynical confused society. The common complaint by your users is usually critical of the lenght of the movie, which confirms their intellect and lack of attention span. you cannot teach piano to someone who is not gifted, It is sad, that Mr. Kubrick, and Mr.Spielberg, were not able to co-direct this movie, However in the absence of kubrick, spielberg, got it and the style of one of his heroes is reflected.this movie was made for the big screen, and, t.v.doen't do it justice. the negative reviewers, would probably find fault in the Bambi movie, get a heart folks, because that is what the movie is all about. the dismissal of our humanities, which is an ongoing process. Machines, that have more passion and genuine goodwill. I believe what makes most viewers dislike this movie, is the illustration of the darkest side of our ultimate destiny, and, that makes them uncomfortable. The conclusion of the movie is not corny,it is a summary of our cruelties and frailties. Pretty sad when the I.A.'s have more humanity than us. A similar message was expressed in Soylent Green and that made a few people squirm, the human condition is illustrated only too well, that is why the users comments are negative, like looking in the mirror,eh!

Titanic (1997)
A 200 Million Dollar Flop
As a Canadian,I should be cheering for the canadian director James Cameron. James, for sure is a better writer than a director. I have seen every James Cameron movie, and,at best, they are large budget B movies. What I find careless about this movie,is that it won as many oscars as William Wyler's BEN-HUR. Thatis an insult, and I'm quite sure willey is rolling in his grave.Titanic only redeeming factor is timing and,our morbid pre-occupation with disasters. This story has been told in many movies, which were better directed, with much lower budgets. Hell, with the budget Cameron had,Ed Wood Jr.could have done better,Roger Corman, the notorious cheapskate with that budget would have probably made it better.James, stick with "Arnie",and you may do a movie about governors!!!!!!!!!. That ego you developed after the movie was making zillions does not putyou in the same league as Spielberg, more like Tobe Hooper!!
