Naked in Ashes (2005)
Interesting and Informative!
If you've ever wanted a deeper understanding of Yogis and sadhus, this film will take you there. It's incredible to experience these Yogis daily practices and self-discipline, and gain insight into their beliefs. The film is beautifully shot and written, and takes viewers on a journey through a world that we wouldn't normally have access to. A unique and fascinating story about the deeply spiritual, highly committed world of the Yogi, it is a truly interesting piece of art, and even if you're not a yogi yourself, you will still be mesmerized by this world. The filmmaker made sure to spend a quality amount of time with each person, in order to bring the viewer a full understanding of their beliefs, rituals and practices, so that viewers have a first-hand account of what it takes to be sadhu.
Song of the Dunes: Search for the Original Gypsies (2009)
A fascinating journey
I knew very little about the Roma Peoples (Gypsies) before watching this film. Through thoughtful narration, colorful scenery, interesting characters and desert music to tie it all together, you're taken on a journey to gain a much deeper understanding of an entire people, through centuries of history to present day. Thoughtful and well presented, it's a must-watch for anyone interested in the true story of the gypsies, and the origin of the stereotypes that often follow. This film would also be great for educational purposes; classrooms, community centers, and youth/senior groups would benefit from this extensive knowledge, while enjoying the artistic expression of the filmmaker.
No Asylum: The Untold Chapter of Anne Frank's Story (2015)
A powerful film that brings us face to face with ourselves
No Asylum tells the heart wrenching story of Otto Frank's desperate attempts to seek asylum in the US in order to save his family. Knowing the horrors that await as he is turned down over and over again is difficult to bear, but necessary to remember, as sadly we face a similar refugee situation today. The language and xenophobia used at the time leading up to the holocaust was eerily familiar. Through narration, photos, and interviews with holocaust survivors including those who knew the Frank family personally, this beautifully made film helps us to remember our past, so that we can do all that we can to try and prevent repeating this tragic history.
