Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein (2019)
Worse than something two high school kids threw together!
I think this short was supposed to be an absurd, funny spoof on Orson Wells, and I frequently like this sort of thing, but I did not find this one funny or enjoyable at any time except when the assistant continued acting after they were "caught". The premise was not very clear in the beginning. The people in the office scenes should have been at least a little believable, but were not. The acting in those office scenes was awful. I could see what the play scenes were going for, but they didn't quite get there. The scene with the mother was particularly bad, and that scene had the potential to be hysterical if done properly. It was hard to tell when David Harbour was acting as himself and when he was acting as his father. There should have been something noticeable to clue the viewers as to which person he was at which times.
It was mentioned in another review that this looked like something two high school boys threw together. My own son, Will Lugar and his high school friends, did a spoof on Ed Wood's films that they called Blu Tabascoe and another spoof on Metal Gear called Metal Gear Solid: Fight of Metal Gears. On a zero budget, both are much funnier than this short (they are located on YouTube under user ID megaritz).
Watching Frankenstein's Monster's Monster, Frankenstein was a half-hour of my life that I will never get back. I decided to spend another half-hour in an attempt to warn others to not waste their time as I did.
Clash of the Empires (2012)
Skip this one!
The casting and acting are awful! I only made it about half-way through before I had to turn it off. I turn off less than 5% of the movies I start. The only good thing about this film is the location; it has beautiful scenery!
Sherlock (2002)
Not faithful to original characters but still has merit
This movie is not faithful to Conan-Doyle's characters. Mycroft is a disabled recluse instead of a strong-willed, mover-and-shaker in the government. Dr. Watson is a mortician instead of a physician. Sherlock is a drunken womanizer (I suspect that if a person were to really drink all that he did in one evening, that person would end up in the hospital ... or the morgue). Vincent D'Nofrio's performance of Dr. Moriarty comes across as stilted and silly, not at all the brilliant and witty character we are used to seeing; although, I suspect that may be due more to the script than to the acting.
That said, I tried to view the movie on its own merits rather than comparing it to the original stories and other depictions of Sherlock, and this movie still has value as entertainment. The canes doubling as swords and one-shot guns was clever. The sword fights were interesting. Dr. Moriarty as the inventor of a new drug was ingenious.
It wasn't what I'd hoped for, but I'm still glad that I watched it.
The Count of Monte-Cristo (1975)
Amazing prison scenes, but wanting in certain other scenes. Overall worth watching.
There are several scenes that should have been re-shot. The "arrest that man" scene was done in a clumsy and fake way. The scenes in the prison were marvelous, especially after the two prisoners meet.
Overall, the movie felt rushed and incomplete. Most of the important scenes from the book were left out. Of course, the book was very long and involved and intricately woven together, and a movie of normal length really couldn't do the book justice.
Anyone who loves the book should see this movie anyway, especially for the prison scenes.
Sherlock Holmes and the Shadow Watchers (2011)
Great story, good effort by non-professionals, but not ready for the big screen
I loved the story line! This was a brand-new story, not written by Conan Doyle. The script needs a little more work though to make the lines flow better. There seems to be an error in the number of murders that were done prior to the one in the opening scene. At one point, it said there were two, at another point, it said three. I would like to have seen more deduction in the story rather than explaining afterward.
The first scene was so badly done that I almost turned it off, but I'm glad I resisted that urge and watched the whole thing.
If I were reviewing this with professional actors, I would be rather cruel about the acting, but since they are not professionals, the performances were reasonable. In the beginning Holmes was overacting and his eyes certainly got too big in one early scene, but he got somewhat better as the story went on. I really wish they had dubbed in the violin music; it was bad. Dr. Watson's performance was great! The newspaper man was very good, and his lover was also good. I did not like LaStrade's accent at all; it was very distracting. Everyone needs more experience in acting on camera. Many of them would be fine on the local stage, but the camera is unforgiving because it records every little thing.
The murder in the first scene continues for much too long and is rather ridiculous on the overacted knife scene in the shadows. The camera work in that first scene is also very much overdone in looking up at the watchers. After that, the camera work gets better.
I am glad I watched this. Those who expect perfection should not watch it, but those who love new Holmes stories should definitely see it.
