Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Star Trek - The Boring Picture
Of all the Start Trek Films this was the least entertaining.
The fact that no established writer wanted to write the script should have been the first sign to producers of a pending disaster. The story was choppy and appears to have elements of several of the TV story lines twisted within the script.
The actors we stiff. That has always been the norm for Shatner, but even Nimoy, Doohan, and Kelly just didn't seem to have the chemistry that they had in the TV series or even the later films.
And this film, coming off the heels of Star Wars, had to make the special effects even more special. Unfortunately, without a good story, the special effects are meaningless and Trumball and Dyskstra just couldn't carry the whole film.
It's a good thing the had better success with Wrath of Khan or we may not have had the Star Trek culture that we have today.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Good performances. poor script
The performances by the cast were good considering the weakness of the script.
It seems Kurt Russell has found his niche in these westerns. His character in this film was similar to his role in "Tombstone" and his more recent performance is Quinten Tarentino's film "Hateful Eight".
I found Mathew Foxes performance as Brooder to be done well, but the costuming was inconsistent; a debonair Indian fighter?
Richard Jenkins character of Chicory was well done and in some ways provided comic relief.
And although Lili Simons character was the catalyst for the main storyline, I felt that she was almost a through away character because the story didn't explain why she came into the story. Maybe she was the token woman for the film?
The problem with this movie is the story. It dragged at times and did little to develop the characters or tie ends together. It seems that it traded in script for unnecessary gore although the basic storyline had a lot of potential.
Around the World Under the Sea (1966)
Entertaining for an 7 year old
I remember seeing this as part of a summer movie program in 1963. I got to see 11 movies for $1.00. One movie was shown each Tuesday. So I paid nine cents for it. That was fair.
It was great entertainment for the 7-13 year old crowd. Lloyd Bridges was known for Sea Hunt. Keenan Wynn had been in some TV Westerns so he was a known entity. Flipper (Kelly), Daktari(Thompson) and Man from Uncle(McCallum) hadn't even been broadcast, so most of the cast was unknown.
Bad acting, bad science, great special effects. Everything a 7 year old boy looks for.
Rio Bravo (1959)
Mildly entertaining, formula, John Wayne film
This was a mildly entertaining John Wayne film that fits the typical "Duke" formula.
With a good supporting cast, John Wayne plays a character that he's played in so many of his other films. This film was a good vehicle to introduce Ricky Nelson to the big screen. Rio Bravo also offered the first appearance of Angie Dickerson with Dean Martin, a future member of "The Rat Pack". Walter Brennan plays his regular crusty old coot that provides the comic relief and fits right into this formula film.
This film will make you think that John Wayne might have said "Well, it's time to make another movie". The he dusted off an old script (Eldorado), called the gang together, and made a movie.
I found this film to be entertaining while reading the Sunday newspaper.
