The Hillz (2004)
1 star for... participation?
I was SO bored on a Sunday afternoon. That is my only excuse for watching this horrid movie. I am not the type of person that would pick it up in Blockbuster, I swear. But it was on, and nothing else was so I watched The Hillz.
The acting was terrible, which was particularly sad considering the script seemed SO bad a 4th grader could have memorized it. However, one would hope a 4th grader would not *say* that much profanity. It is hard to give this waste of time even 1 star out of 10, but there is no zero option. I suppose the 1 is given for participation. Camera guy, you get a star for putting film in the camera! (Wish you hadn't, though.) Paris and other actors (using the term *loosely* here), way to go! You showed up for filming! *sigh*
I was bored on a Sunday afternoon. I watched the Hillz. Now I am *more* bored. I think I may watch one of my little brother's high school plays my dad recorded on the family camcorder. Better acting, filming, etc.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Nothing to Prove... But Funny as Heck.
Yesterday my friends and I decided to go the movies to laugh. We picked Napoleon Dynamite because one of us "heard it's pretty funny." And you know what? WE LAUGHED. At the beginning of the movie we looked at each other and whispered "do you wanna stay and watch this? We could leave, I guess." But somehow things changed. We laughed. We laughed at his moon boots. We laughed at his sayings. Duane about bust a gut because so much of it was filmed in his home town of Boise, Idaho and he kept recognizing everything, including the thrift store, Deseret Industries... a favorite place of ours. We laughed till we cried in some parts. We quoted it back to each other under our breath. We went to the movie to laugh. And this film succeeded wildly at that. Was it an academy award winning masterpiece? Nope. And we didn't care. We cared that it made us laugh. And by the end, we loved Napoleon. We wanted to hang out with someone like him. He was still a nerd at the end... and that was just fine. He didn't need to change, and I hope he never does.
Saints and Soldiers (2003)
Surprisingly Good!
Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but I admit I am a bit cynical about "churchy" movies. But this was excellent. The "Mormon" aspect was tastefully done. Anyone could go and not feel as if it is didactic... it wasn't pushed on you, in fact, some may not even notice aside from a reference to being a missionary. This blows "Other Side of Heaven" away, and if that got mainstream play, this one had better as well. Granted, if you hate war movies you won't like this. But if you are interested in the history you will be pleased with the quality. Corbin Alred did better than I have ever seen him do, and other cast was also fantastic. I didn't love Kirby Heyborne, but even he pulled it off. It was sad... WAR is sad. Anyway, marvelous.
How Rare a Possession: The Book of Mormon (1987)
Probably my favorite...
church movie that I had out in the mission. I just really enjoy the story, and there is even a little humor. Much better done than most of the videos you can get at the Distribution Center. Not nearly as boring or cheezy.
The R.M. (2003)
Truer than it SHOULD be!
This movie is silly, ridiculous... and a bit more true than we would like to think! I just got back from serving a mission in Texas and found the movie HILARIOUS. Of course it is stupid, so was Single's Ward... but I laughed out loud the whole time. My family DID move while I was gone (of course, they TOLD me), my parents were confused until right at the end as to when I was coming home (My mother was CONVINCED I should be home in March when I came home the end of April!) and I feel like adjusting to the "real world" has been among the hardest things I have ever done! I guess I like it so much because I relate to it. I think that this one is actually MUCH funnier than Single's Ward, though I liked Single's Ward soundtrack more. Over all, The R.M. was just stupid... and I loved every minuet of it.
