Sykt lykkelig (2010)
Not enough going on and a bit predictable
I knew after the first 10 minutes that it was going to be pretty much like this for the entirety of the film. Sometimes, that's a good thing. In this case, no. Unless you enjoy uncomfortable domestic situations and people who are insecure and story lines that offer no relief. I'm sorry, but it's not entertaining, for one thing - but it's also not making a grande statement. It's just not pleasurable to watch. I guess, if I would say one thing, I feel bad that very fine actors were involved in this effort, mostly because the script left them nowhere interesting to go. It's definitely not a comedy in the sense that I was hoping for. Maybe Norwegians think this is hilarious? I'm not sure. But as an American who loves mostly foreign films, this one struck me as one to put back in the DVD box before I could make it to one laugh.

A really excellent film and one I'll watch again
I wish there were more films like this that are entertaining but explore cultural elements that are truly priceless for those who are not living day-to-day in similar religions or cultures. This film was multi-generational, and touched me deeply, even as I know I would not be likely in the typical marketing group. I have to say, it's just well-written, superbly acted and directed and compelling in a unique and interesting way. I felt I was learning and growing but also feeling the emotional upheaval that goes on in these types of compromising situations with family, with love, with societal norms. But the film isn't preachy. It's sexy at times, it's educational and the cinematography is sublime and smart. Hollywood would not diss this film, as it follows many qualities of a commercial, popular film that would find a mass audience. The music, which should always be mentioned, was perfect for the scenes. The timing of actors was impeccable, and story was full of truth, even if the situation could seem far-fetched; it never felt overly produced or concocted from some means to make the story more exciting or commercial. The actresses deserve big kudos. Amazing work - all of them. I will likely want to buy my own copy of this film. Hope the director can find his way to make another and use these actors again.
