Coming 2 America (2021)
Fun and Nostalgic as hell!
The movie even pokes fun at itself, saying how sequels are unnecessary and ruin the originals. In this case, that's not entirely true. Yes, it was unnecessary, but overall, I found Coming 2 America to be fun and nostalgic as hell! I grew up watching Eddie and Arsenio perform, so getting a chance to see them be their hilarious selves again (in several roles), was a real treat! I don't care what the critics say, I loved it!
Christmas in the Wild (2019)
I'm all in!
Looking for a feel good movie? This is it, folks! Fun, positive and full of good will, not to mention solid performances by Lowe and Davis. Don't look too deep, but rather enjoy watching something that's just going to make you smile and feel the holidays.
Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun (2020)
Everything's a drum!
From the intro song "Everything's a drum", in episode 1, to also evicting their dishwasher
in that same episode, to everything else the other shows in this series have to offer....ONE BIG HILARIOUS MOMENT AFTER THE NEXT!
Did you know even this pot is a drum?
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Most excellent movie, dude!
I love nostalgia, and this film checks off all the boxes for it! So much fun to see Bill and Ted rocking out to their air guitars again, and great to see strong female leads take the helm alongside them as their daughters (whom also happen to be extremely important characters in a pretty well devised plot). Most triumphant film, dudes! Party on, and be excellent to each other!
Tenet (2020)
Huhhhh?
4 words - I...don't...get...it. Great sound effects, excellent soundtrack, fantastic acting, breathtaking action, but such a confusing plot that you feel like you should have studied temporal physics (if there is such a thing) before walking into the movie theatre, so you can actually follow the story without scratching your head. I'll have to watch this again to really think about what's actually happening in this film. Maybe then, I could rate it as high as everyone else is on here.
Joker (2019)
MASTERPIECE!
"The Shining", meets "Taxi Driver", meets "Split", with a little dash of "The Fly" and "Alien" (you'll see what I mean by these last two when you get a look at Arthur Fleck's strangley contorted body movements in the film)! Need I say more. Yes, in fact, I do need to say more. I haven't walked out of a film this stunned since "The Dark Knight" and "The Matrix", before that.
The opportunity to see the most evil/psychotic/diabolical character in DC/Marvel history, morph and evolve from lonely medicated sad sap to absolutely insane unmedicated criminal icon, was a pure uncomfortable and breathtaking experience. So extremely well acted by Phoenix. And then there's the music. Holy F#$k! You'll be amazed by a mesmerizing soundtrack that is more like a trip into the Joker's twisted mind, than it is as supporting music for actions in a scene.
Phillips did everything right in creating a believable history to explain Fleck's evolution into madness and gives us an absolute symphony that elegantly blends Phoenix's Joker into Ledger's, basically leap frogging right over "Batman Begins" and slamming us directly into "The Dark Knight". It's art, it's madness, it's chaos, and it's, in true Joker-like fashion, darkly, darkly funny.
There is absolutely no way that the current presentation of Batman could ever exist in this movie. "Joker" has set a very high bar, that the campy Justice League movies can never aspire to. I'm not sure how DC fits their PG superhero movies into "Joker's" R-rated world, but if they could find a way, something magical could happen here.
How the current Meta-Critic average score is only a 58, is mind blowing to me. I would take this film over any Marvel movie, any day. Disney could never pull off what "Joker" has accomplished here, and that's what DC needs to keep doing if they want to offer something that is unique to our typical superhero outings. Well done...well done indeed!
Otherhood (2019)
Otherhood is heartwarming fun!
Loved it! As a son, and only child, I had no problem identifying with the boys in the film, and laughing at how balls-on accurate their uncomftorability with their mothers is! And, as a parent, I can also identify with that feeling of raising a child to be so independent that they are able to succeed and fend for themselves, but how that also leaves a void in a parent's heart when they no longer feel as depended on, as they once were. The movie really connects with mothers, obviously, but more generally parents, as well as sons who might cringe a little if there mom was just to pop up at their home unannounced, and say "I'm moving in for a few days"! Yowsa!
Shazam! (2019)
SHAZAMTASTIC!
Truly funny and entertaining film! Some very humorous scenes reminiscent of a similar film, "Big", if not actually sometimes an homage to it. Equally, there are wildly entertaining clips of Batson testing what powers he actually has and how he reacts to such tests. And then there are some pretty beautiful heartfelt moments between Billy and his foster family, not to mention, tons of action to fill the rest of the story. Well done DC! Another bonafide hit, and a welcome break from Disney formulaic Marvel films.
Darth Maul: Apprentice (2016)
The Phantom Menace should have began with this!
Okay...here's what you do...imagine that this short film is the actual intro to The Phantom Menace. Now, you have that well deserved screen time that Maul should have had in the original, and an action packed beginning that is way more exciting than 2 Jedi resolving a trade dispute. In fact, I'll make it even easier for you Star Wars fans; here's a new crawl I wrote that you can read before watching this masterpiece and then following it up with TPM:
The Galactic Republic is now secretly under the control of a Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, and his apprentice, Maul, who is completing his training. His last task, to kill a group of Jedi.
At the same time, Sidious begins his manipulation of the Republic by employing the greedy Trade Federation to block all trade to the planet, Naboo.
Although its people and leader, Queen Amidala, are peaceful, the blockade serves as a political device for Sidious to gain power in the Galactic Senate. Two Jedi Knights attempt to negotiate with the leaders of the Trade Federation
Now all you have to do is try to ignore the Jar Jar antics, and you'll have a much richer and more adult oriented film. Try this out; guarantee you'll enjoy TPM more than you did before.
Aquaman (2018)
Aquamazing!
Great movie! Excellent cinematography, to start, and amazing action scenes as well. Really loved Aqua's sense of humor and enjoyed watching the development of Mantis as one of the series' main villains for futures to come. I believe that the DC extended universe has been panned a little too harshly by critics and that despite that, it can recover. Aquaman is the sure fire hit for WB, that helps the universe reclaim itself! Well done!
Venom (2018)
Venom, an underrated hit!
Loved it! Being a product of such fantastic 80s movie's as Aliens and Predator, I felt right at home with this flick. It was like watching an homage to these two great franchises, with a healthy dose of King Kong, wrapped up in a badass Venom costume, way cooler than the one Topher wore in Spiderman 3. Also, I ABSOLUTELY loved the hilarious banter between Eddie and the symbiote, and the fact that they both were losers in their own worlds, and it is that bond that convinces the symbiote to not destroy Earth. It was not a typical Disney Marvel film, and thank goodness for that. It is more of a monster/horror flick and a hell of a lot of fun!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
SPIDER-VERSE ROCKS
Phenomenal movie! Exciting, funny and action packed. I used to collect Spiderham as a kid, so loved his presence in the movie. Smart move to use the multiverse, as it still keeps Tom Holland's Spiderman alive, with the possibility of branching out with the other characters in more films. A real nice year for Sony, with the success of both this and Venom.
