It Chapter Two (2019)
Doesn't build on Chapter Ones momentum
I have been desperate to see this for months having not been able to catch it at the cinema and now I have finally seen it I think all the negative reviews were unfair.
Brilliant casting of the adult characters, they all bore a resemblance to their child counterparts. I initially thought Bill Hader would play his part to comedic and be out of place but I thought he was one of the best performers. Although this was a film for the adults, the kids didn't get much screen time and what scenes they did get felt more like a nostalgia trip than flashbacks. The film definitely lacks what made the first film so good because of this.
The film itself it a bit of a let down after the intensity of part one but they only had the source material to work with so they can't be blamed for not living up to the previous film.
The ending sucks, but we all knew that!
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
There and back again
I was dubious heading in to the cinema to see this, I just couldn't see how this last segment of the book could fill a 2 hour film. It started off right where it needed to and Smaug flying over the town looked spectacular. Nice to see Christopher Lee too, even if it was his face superimposed! The battle scenes were epic and the cinematography during these scenes was perfect. There are still a few elements I'm not sure have been depicted as in the book and the battle certainly filled up screen time where there was no dialogue. Overall it was enjoyable and I felt the same as I did when I got to the end of RotK in that I was wanting more as you do feel like you have been on a journey yourself with these films, but my opinion has not changed that they could have made two really good epic films without any filler, or Orlando Bloom.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
From despair to where
I recorded this off Sky quite a few months ago and I was always waiting for the right moment to watch it given the films theme and contents. Channel 4 recently showed a documentary about psychopaths and this film was featured in it. Experts deemed the performance to be very like that of a real psychopath and it made me even more reluctant to watch it. I finally watched it last night and initially thought it was a bit miss jointed and wondered if I had missed some of it. The film is shown out of order with flash back and current intermixed. From a film making point of view it didn't look as good as films like The Fighter or American History X which would have added to the films bleak storyline, and playing up beat music like Buddy Holly further added to the confusion (I guess this was deliberate) Tilda Swinton's despair was portrayed very well and although Kevin's psychopathic tendencies for the most part are just mental, I remained tense throughout sensing something was going to happen. The climax, although you never see it on screen is quite powerful.
Highlander: The Source (2007)
MacLeods quest for the Source ultimately fails to deliver
Considering the makers of the film joined a fans forum to research what the fans wanted from a Highlander film they didn't do a very good job, either that or this is what the fans said they wanted the film to be like!
The film is essential viewing for fans though, if anything just to confirm how good the first really was! The effects aren't as bad as reports and reviews actually suggest and its only the quickening scene that looks a bit cheap. The quest for the Source is an acceptable storyline and the film has an interesting ending.
If this film were to be made properly it could have been quite good.
The Business (2005)
Classic British film
If you think Scarface in Spain but with cockneys you're half way there! From the beginning its clear that this is a first rate British film. If your not hooked from the frantic opening then the 80s music will definitely get your attention! The film tells the story of Frankie, a Londoner with no prospects. After he kills his mothers abusive boyfriend he flees to Spain to lie low and so begins his new life. There he is taken in by Charlie, a club owner and local gangster. Frankies now living the high life, but with power comes greed and danger, and you could so easily lose it all...
There really is nothing to fault about this film. I was hooked from start to finish.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
A fitting end to a brilliant series????
I went to see it last night and to be honest i was disappointed. The opening scene was spectacular to say the least, partly down to the big screen no doubt! There were some very good moments that make Star Wars such an event, but ultimately the film seemed very rushed. Anakins change to the dark side almost seemed like an after thought ( i know it wasn't by the way!) and should have been dealt with in more depth. The massacre of all the Jedi also seemed rushed, what was George thinking? "Damn forgot to kill them all, ah well" As for the giant lizard riding. As usual though the special effects were spot on.
The film should have been a lot darker like The Empire Strikes Back though. Given the films content. it should also have being at least 3 hours in length.
I totally agree with the 12A rating though :!
The Abyss (1989)
Under water sci-fi thats confusing from start to finish.
I finally managed to watch this film from start to finish last night, and i was bored witless all the way through. It seemed very slow until the alien lifeform as the strange water arrived. Micheal Biehns fight with Ed Harris also seemed confusing. In my opinion when Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonios character would not have been revived that long after taking in so much water!
I also read that the breathing with liquid scene was actually real and the mice really did experience it, which led to some versions of the film being cut due to veterinary complaints.
The ending with the aliens just seemed cheap and rushed to me, and reminded me of the simpsons episode where they think there's an alien but it turns out to be Mr Burns on medication!
All in all one very long winded and confusing under water sci-fi farce!
Blade: Trinity (2004)
Has the blade finally gone blunt?
I saw this last night and in my opinion i don't think it was worthy of being called a Blade film.
Don't get me wrong but it wasn't a patch on the others. Blade was and is a cult classic that will never be copied because it was so unique, even though it was a film about vampires. Unfortunalty Blade 2 ( originally subtitled Bloodline btw ) didn't really carry on the theme of Blade. It had the action and the veichles but i don't think it was a worthy follow up and the ending seemed a bit rushed to me. Blade Trinity seemed to be trying to milk the Blade franchise for all it was worth and didn't seem like a convincing sequel to me. Even the thought of having Dracula in the film lowered the tone. On the plus side the action was there, boy was it there! and it was good to see the Dodge Charger back in action! What let the film down though was the introduction of the Nightstalkers, which for me made it more of a collective effort like the X Men which isn't what Blade is about. There was some comedy moments form Ryan Renolds though which were genuinely funny but seemed out of place in the film. As with the second film the ending seemed rushed and probably could've being a lot better.
Apparently there's going to be a spin off series with the Nightstalkers which is going to cheapen what Blade was/is even more
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
The ultimate showdown??...
Was really looking forward to this after seeing all the nightmare films when i was younger and reading two good reviews of the film. It started off really well with Freddy recounting what happened in the past and how he died. Jason is revived to gather up the kids so Freddy can resume killing them. Thats when it turns into another Scream type movie and not a lot really happens thereafter. Until the end when Freddy and Jason finally get to do battle which was pretty cool and dark. Overall pretty disappointed as i expected more.
I wont say who won apart from it was either Freddy or Jason!!
It would also have being better if they had used the ending where they were made to do battle in hell in front of a million red eyes for eternity...
Army of Darkness (1992)
Good but its no Evil Dead 3....
After the ending to Evil Dead II i was expecting something pretty special, and when i rented this film years ago the opening carried on where the last film had left off. It got pretty disappointing thereafter though. This film blatantly didn't take itself seriously and went for more of a horror comedy, or should that be comedy that contains horror?! Once you get past that its no Evil Dead III though you can actually begin to enjoy this film for what it really is. A light hearted spin off from the original films. I personally didn't like the original ending to this film and I'm yet to see the alternate ending but at the same time it was also a fitting end to the series.
Saw (2004)
Interestingly frustrating!
This film left me mad and frustrated, if that was the intention then well done! But i didn't like the fancy camera work, it didn't fit in with the rest of the film i thought. I also thought the two guys acting was a little suspect. As for the comparisons to Seven i couldn't really identify it. Although this was a psychological horror of sorts it wasn't in the same vein as Seven. It definitely wasn't particularly gory or as scary as it was hyped up to be either, i went in expecting to see some pretty horrific things and didn't. It was also full of flashbacks which weren't confusing but it added to my frustration with the film.
The little twist at the end though did leave me a little stunned for a second, which was obviously the intention!
I just feel it could of being a lot better than it was, but it definitely left an impression on me so they did something right!
Layer Cake (2004)
The British film weve being waiting for...
From the opening credits with The Cults She Sells Sanctuary you know this film is going to be special!
Daniel Craig is a drug dealer and is hired to find a buyer for 1 million pills plus find his bosses daughter. But its not that easy, the original owner of the pills wants them back and his boss wants him dead.
This film is a lot classier than Lock Stock et al and you know from the beginning that its in another class, and with lots of little twists it really does keep the viewer involved.
Definitely worthy of repeat viewings. Recommended.
The Village (2004)
If this film doesn't make you jump nothing will!!!
OMG what a weird film!!!
This has to be one of the scariest films I've seen, I'm being serious here! Forget your Nightmare and Friday 13th films. I jumped on several occasions and so did a good number of the audience!!!
Every time i see a M. Night Shyamalan film i end up leaving the cinema freaked out, and it was only The Sixth Sense that was a 15, the rest were 12s!
I think its the fact they're more psychological than horror films, but they seem to do the trick!!!
I haven't bothered describing the film as, with all his work there's a twist that needs to be seen!!!!
