Day of a Thousand Screams (2012)
Unusually restrained.
One of the perks working for a website dedicated to independent Horror filmmakers is that I get screeners of soon to be released movies. Sometimes I get a great movie, sometimes an awful one and sometimes I get something I'm not sure how to classify.
I don't think this qualifies as a body count movie as there aren't that many characters to bump off. Can't say it is a scare-fest either as it isn't scary or suspenseful at all for most of the proceedings. Lets call it: Horror lite.
There is some on-screen violence, nothing graphic or gory. If you are expecting tons of hysterical screaming coming from the would-be-victims as the title implies, you will be disappointed. It was only after I gave it some thought I realized why the movie is called DAY OF A 1000 SCREAMS.
As expected in micro-horror movies, mostly amateur acting from the cast, including the more seasoned cast members: Lucien Eisenach & Reuben Rox. Only Cara Mattern as the screamer of the group impresses.
Despite a trite plot (newswoman and others stalked by madman in the woods), this has a somewhat likable cast, unexpected funny moments, it moves at a very brisk pace, and features some interesting editing and camera work.
Reportedly they ran out of money before completing it properly. By no means what I would call a good Horror movie. Not the worst either. It was a little different. Definitely not your typical Slasher movie.
The end credits promise a sequel featuring zombies and bloodier deaths. I for one, will be looking forward to it.
1313: Cougar Cult (2012)
Strictly for Michelle, Linnea, Brinke and shirtless men fans.
I have watched almost every David Decoteau movie he made in the 80's to the early 2000's. From Dreamaniac to Leeches. COUGAR CULT is really nothing like those. Yes, he got our beloved Scream Queens back, but sadly gave them very little to work with and spent too much time filming shirtless guys taking showers or sleeping in the middle of the day in nothing but underwear for no apparent reason. I like eye candy as much as the next gal, but the only reason I bought (yes, BOUGHT) a copy was for Michelle, Linnea and Brinke. Don't get me wrong, I will continue watching DeCoteau movies, especially if he casts the ladies, just give them more to do.
Linnea gets the more screen time if I remember correctly than Brinke and Michelle. There really isn't that much dialog or action. Just the would-be-victims whining about not knowing how to give a massage, clean a pool or cook.
"Cougar Cult" wasn't that bad really, only 2 things bothered me: the very silly cougar effect used when the ladies turned into cougars and the repeated shower/sleeping scenes. I know this was shot in 2 or 3 days so maybe that's why those scenes seemed to linger forever (to add to the running time).
I hope this this sells enough units/downloads, for a sequel with less barely dressed boys and more of the trio.
