Documentary in it's best
5 August 2005
One of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen and one of the best documentaries as well.

The customs of western Georgia are really amazing!!! I was holding my breath and simply couldn't move! And though I am Georgian I have never seen anything like this! The condolences ceremony shown with a great vision of the director makes you feel terrified.

I was trying to get Nino Kirtadze's previous work 'Chechen Lullaby' - no luck but I really look forward for her next work as 'Dites à mes amis que je suis mort' made some unforgettable impression on me!

btw - I'm a lucky person, Nino Kirtadze was my Schoolteacher :)

Crimson Gold

"He motorbikes every evening to neighborhoods he will never live in, for a closer look at what goes on behind closed doors. But one Night, Hussain tastes the luxurious life, before his deep feelings of humiliation push him over the edge."

It's sad to see reviews - saying this is a boring movie... This movie is so good, that I totally forgot about WATCH or even Time. Hussain is one of the most interesting characters I have ever seen... and with no doubt Jafar Panahi with his 'The Circle' and 'Crimson Gold' one of the most talented directors of our time...

thx for this movie... I really enjoyed watching it on Tbilisi International Film Festival (just today)and I hope the movie gets the main prize...

Repentance (1984)

Repentance
7 September 2004
Warning: Spoilers
The action takes place in the USSR province of Georgia, today. Varlam Aravidze's funeral has been a very solemn ceremony. And yet, the very next day, his body is dug up and dumped into his son Avel's garden. Buried once again, the body is once again unearthed, as if this man's corpse was destined not to rest in peace.

The culprit is soon found. Ketevan Barateli is dragged to court where a long flash-back shows us the persecutions her family had to endure under the dictator. He persecuted her father, her mother, who have since both disappeared and then Ketevan herself, with a cruelty sadistic and pervert.

The trial brings to light the truth about a man who was but the mayor of a small town but whose personality and behaviour bring to mind both Mussolini and Hitler, as well as Stalin and Beria.

Varlams Grandson commits suicide when he discovers the truth about his grandfather and denial of everything by his father.

And still the dictator's corpse cannot rest in peace...

Varlam & Avel Aravidze is played by Avtandil Makharadze. Brilliant performance - one of the best dictator faces ever done.

Top of Georgian movies
8 August 2004
Georgia is a little country with a population of 5 million people and its quite amazing, that we could produce such a great movies... (Unfortunately COULD is the key word here)

This is a touching story of a father who takes this long, sometimes very funny and at the same time very sad journey to find his son... his tall, handsome son...

maybe one have to know Georgia and people of Georgia to understand this movie and especially understand this old man...

And though I give credit to the director, I must admit the movie is great because of Sergo Zaqariadze... this is one of the best actors performances you can find... not only in post-soviet countries... I recommend to rent this movie as well, and maybe get a bit of Georgian Soul...

P.S. I don't see why it is recommended 'Ivanovo detstvo' (1962)... GREAT movie from GREAT TARKOVSKI... but nothing in common with 'Father of a Soldier'

Post Soviet Cinema Space Still Alive...
2 August 2004
Vagif Mustafayev is one of the most talented Directors of the post soviet space... he was noticed by critics in 1988 with his movie THE SCOUNDREL... in year 1991 he did even better with the movie VNE aka(OUTSIDE)... though I think his best work is a short movie ALL FOR THE BEST - Fantastic movie which won 4 main Prizes at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen...

In NATIONAL BOMB stylistic and artistic features take over. This is a great Comedy, but a very sad movie at the same time. It's a very familiar story, about shooting a movie which has to stop because of lack of money. The story comes alongside with the life-story of an old studio editor, who is fired for the same reason...

I can call it a sequence to old favorites - from great Georgian shorts to Fassbinder and Wenders... it's all there and at the same time unique...

The only thing I didn't like in the movie is - THE SCRIPT... I get the feeling the movie isn't sustained by a powerful one.

however, the main actor - Avtandil Makharadze, who once shocked audiences with superb performance in "Repentance" (one of the best soviet time movie), is strong enough to hold films meaning and structure together. once you get to see this old editor, you fall in love...
