The War I Knew (2014)
Disappointing
I you expect all the fear and wondrous suspense this kind of plot/theme could bring you, you will be largely disappointed. A journey like this could well have been an emotionally terrifying personal experience, yet it became a continuous parade of semi humorous and would be heroic encounters by a bunch of unyielding shallow characters, which left me totally unsatisfied and - after a while - starting to skip scenes. I applaud any attempt to get a movie project together - not a easy task and I must say that technically this movie has a nice continuity, but, nothing gets to me more than having to listen to well-meaning attempts at speaking a foreign language that fail miserably. At least hire real Germans and French or use native voice overs to do the job. What also sort of perplexed me was the lack of realism. In a particular scene, for example, our heroes are sharpshooting moving German targets from quite a distance - one shot - one hit... I must admit never having seen the end of the movie - I could not come up with a good excuse to stay with it.
Stranded (2014)
Nothing much there...
Why did Tom Berenger lend himself to this obvious low budget film? One can only guess. Early indicators for me were the cheap effects that were meant to set the historic context, but blurred faces and two bit actors shooting at each other for minutes in brown-tone? Tom appears first as if in a documentary talking with a badly done - ghost like - cut out effect that sets him against a 'western' landscape, introducing more of the context - later on the same effect is used in a court scene, making him look even more like a ghost. These wishful attempts to give the story substance fail and only amplify the minimal acting and storyline. 2 points for the effort.
The Cafe (2011)
Not Bad at all....
Having read the present reviews beforehand I must admit that I had mixed feelings when I started to watch the show. I think the viewer will be pleasantly entertained instead. I've watched the characters unfold in the first two episodes and could appreciate the 'underbelly' humour that is continuously present in the lines and performances of the well-cast actresses and actors. This is not meant as hilarious entertainment; rather, it is the subtle dynamics of close acting that does the trick. The environment is set up very nicely. This is not a decor. Not at all, this is almost a reality show in its set up. So, let's see how this series develops in time.
