The Last Man on Earth (2015)
Explosive Dysentery
The Pilot aired on Australian television this week. Aired... aired nothing. Not for one second did it look like taking off, instead, it dug a hole and then just kept digging. There is is no chance that I may well ruin the plot, because there was none. Really, it was a child's finger painting that should have remained on the refrigerator and yet some-one in their infinite wisdom committed it to celluloid or video instead of the sand box. I am sure that you get the euphemism. It was about as much fun as explosive Dysentery and I would have had a better time with my 'Orchestra Stalls' jammed into a vice. It was one of the worst 20 minutes of my life. Yes, that's right, I cut the advertisements out... silly me. I watched it stone cold sober and then the next night, I watched it again with a moderate amount of 'singing syrup' on board... it did not help. Lastly, the 'soft soap' scene at the end did not save it.
The Producers must have had more money than sense and I am surprised that it was not Directed by Alan Smithee. If you are unfamiliar with the reference, please look it up.
For this commentator, the highlight was the Kinks song 'Ape Man', played at the beginning and sadly not credited. Curiously, the lyrics in this song mention, not wanting to die in a nuclear war... Well this program DID!
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Fasten your seat-belts
The nay-sayers and the precious little angels will find fault in every aspect of this movie. If you listen carefully you can hear their bleating and whining from here. There will be those who would have you believe that this movie is like a dagger that has been plunged into their collective chests and offended all their sensibilities.
NOT TRUE!
If you have a clear conscience and a good heart you will laugh out loud through the entire movie.
On the DVD ensure that you take the time to watch the extra scenes that were cut out by the censor. This time invested will be well rewarded. Like a fine port after a good meal.
Death at a Funeral (2007)
Juan and Fozzie
From beginning to end the ride was as smooth as if it was on a bed of pearls. The opening credits were atop a clever animation that left the viewer with a wry smile and pondering 'what next?'. The terribly sombre opening sequence was fractured by a rather unfortunate mishap, and from that point, honest and genuine laughter burst forth.
So as not to spoil, let it be said, the movie ties in an intricate series of unfortunate mishaps as tightly as the weaving of a microfibre.
The various characters in this movie are grieving, fretting, stressing, ripped, angry, dead, nude, suicidal, disabled, anxious, stupid and in urgent need of a toilet.
When one experiences any of these phenomena, one finds it not only less than amusing, indeed, somewhat stressful however the writers of this screenplay have magically succeeded in making all of these unfortunate circumstances hilarious.
This wonderful movie vicariously allows us to tap in to "Murphy's Law"; that which can go wrong, will go wrong.
Forget about political incorrectness - cut lose and enjoy a belly laugh! It's fabulous!
Supernova (2005)
Stellar
The show is set around a deep space observatory in Central Australia and the personalities of those who work within.
The facility is staffed by Aussies except for one English interloper and it is he who adds a delightful twist to many a circumstance.
The eclectic group that staff the facility is highly intelligent, extraordinarily dedicated and personally insecure.
The facility is located not too far from a small outback Aussie town. ( A Pub, a shop and a couple of houses )
This creates a beautiful dynamic between the staff, internally at the facility and the staff with the locals of the town.
This interplay makes for much light hearted humour, very little seriousness and a jolly good time.
The Aussie outback shines almost as much as the delightful performances, the whacki humour and the night sky.
