Englemageren (2023)
So disappointed
I rarely see a Danish movies these days, but then I get persuaded as this one was trending on Netflix. 20 minutes in I hate the script, I hate the actors, I hate the plot. I'm so disappointed that this garbage gets through editing, reviews and post without anybody saying 'stop'.
There is not a single moment in the story where you feel the characters are real humans, having real emotions. There's not a single moment in the story where you feel this is something that could have happened in the real world, anywhere in the world for that matter.
My unasked for recommendation for the director/writer would be to spend more time on getting details about how people interact, relationships and emotions, how police work, how computers work, how dialogue works, how acting for that sake works, and less on how to show explicit strangulation scenes and bondage fetish - which adds nothing to the drama, but only seems like either a fetish or a pathetic attempt to be shocking.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Everyone says slow, I say thoughtful
A lot of music and television is produced so you get your relief when you expect and demand it to come. This means you are consuming the same product in new packaging again and again and never take the time to really enjoy and think about what you are doing.
I've been a long time fan of Stålenhags art and only acquired a amazon prime subscription to finally see my long time idol become a moving picture (so yes, I am biased). But seeing the tv adoption only made me love his work more and love the people behind and in front more. Stålenhags art has deep reference to 80's lifestyle in rural Sweden and the series extend these references to 80's tv-shows like the twilight zone and 90's x-files. Plus! the intertwined swedish and american rural lifestyle just adds the cherry on top.
The show camouflage a deeper look into human nature around envy, love, loss, desire and choice and serves it in a beautiful and mesmerizing picturesque scenario.
Do your self a favor; don't watch this with the expectance of getting your routine paced show. Pamper your self to a show that you can enjoy on many levels; great stories that ecco fairy tales in the likes of H.C. Andersen and Brother Grimm, picturesque scenarios that blend rural suburbia and great nature with sci-fi classics.
I can't imagine how you cannot enjoy this.
