Unfrosted (2024)
Shockingly bad
Let me start out by saying just last night I watched the Steve Martin documentary on Apple. Watching this, I was struck thinking back to the shame and embarrassment he felt at the failure of Pennies From Heaven. He thought it was going to be a hit and it was a flop. He truly felt bad about it. I can only hope Jerry Seinfeld feels the same way after this disaster. I got to about the 34 minute mark and stopped it to see how was left. ANOTHER HOUR?! I just could not do it. So then I thought, "I'll fast forward to the end" but stopped myself because WHY WOULD I DO THAT?! I give it 3 stars for the unexpected (to me, anyway) cameos. So many BIG names and yet still so bad. I've read the "Get a sense of humor" reviews, and I'm here to tell you, I have a great sense of humor. This movie is not funny! I was alive in the 60's and the nostalgia aspect of it was not lost on me, but that's good for maybe 2 or 3 minutes. These 10/10 reviews have got to be fake. Accepting for the fact that maybe some people really did like it... 10/10?!?!?!? There is just no way.
Franklin (2024)
It's a shame about Michael Douglas
Awful. Just awful. I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes. I suppose there comes a time in every big name actor's career where they just can't act anymore and basically just play themselves. I think Tom Hanks might be at that stage. But I'm okay with that because I love Tom Hanks. That being said, I've always enjoyed Michael Douglas in roles, most recently The Kominsky Method. He was really very good in that. I did not get the "I'm just me playing me" vibe even though he was playing an actor. THIS however, was just painful to watch. His voice, his delivery, all of it, was just off. I learned the little I know about Franklin's stay in France from HBO's John Adam's so I was looking forward to learning more! Not from this show.
In the Cut (2003)
Save yourself
Oof. Where to begin. There is so much wrong with this movie. I honestly don't remember hearing or reading about it when it came out in 2003. When I saw Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo, I thought 'how bad can it be?' The simple answer is VERY bad. There's just too much that is just so unbelievable and weird. Maybe its a "New York" thing. Being told by a cop that someone's body parts were found buried in your garden and not even a 'gasp' or look of shock. Franny seemingly acting like her insane half sister's behavior is normal. The 100% creepy Kevin Bacon stalker character. I'm trying to remember back to 2003. Was stalking not a thing yet? Oh wait. He was just "intense." The horrible, nauseating (to me) shaky camera thing. What did Jane Campion think this added to the movie?! And finally, the gratuitous nudity of Meg Ryan didn't add anything to the story imo but maybe it made Meg feel like a grown up. Reminds me of when Julie Andrews showed her breasts in S. O. B. (I had to look the name of the movie up) in a desperate attempt to break her 'type casting' as someone sweet and lovable. Caused a stir for 5 minutes and then that was that. I fast forwarded through a lot of it but I am pretty sure the parts I skipped would not have improved my rating/review.
Chocolat (2000)
Gets better every time
This is a movie I can easily watch once a year and never get tired of it. There are so many stories within the story and so many lessons to be learned.
The chocolate itself is one of the major stars. The way it is filmed is beautiful and the reactions of the people eating it are perfection. And that hot chocolate?! Someone PLEASE tell me where I can get some of that!!!
Johnny Depp is at his peak Johnny Depp-ness in my opinion. So perfectly cool and aloof yet SO sexy. Not quite sure what accent he was going for but honestly, it makes no difference to me.
It is a story of life, love and redemption and I highly recommend this to all!
Der Name der Rose (1986)
1986 - it was a simpler time
I am always annoyed when I read reviews and people say "I do not understand the "high" or "low" rating, because they have a different opinion. But here I go - I cannot believe this movie has a 7/10 rating. It is really bad. I mean, laugh out loud funny bad. And at over 2 hours, about 40 minutes too long. I am not researching it, but I have to believe this was Christian Slater's first 'lead' role. That he ever got another acting job again based on his performance in this is amazing to me. And what was with the lipstick that kept appearing and then disappearing on his character. I am not sure what that was all about. The casting of Sean Connery in the lead is another head scratcher. Again, if it was even worth the time to investigate I would, but for now I am just glad to be done with "Sherlock Holmes - The Monk."
The Nest (2020)
Ridiculous
First time Jude Law has ever steered me wrong.
I give it 3 stars instead of 1 only because the 1st half of the movie did have me interested. Once they got to London, things went downhill, and I don't just meant for the family. I understand the whole 'smoke and mirrors' plot, but that she didn't immediately call him out on his b.s. After the big party where Andrew told everyone he asked to come back, vs. His version of why they moved back to London really annoyed me. The whole horse story is a bizarre distraction. When he said he paid "$5000" for the horse, I have to admit, I forgot this was set in the 80's and had to Google what that would be in today's money.
One of the most hysterically funny things to me is how the daughter has this party and gets totally blasted on drugs and alcohol and has not the teeny tiniest bit of a hang over in the morning. "Let's make breakfast" after seeing her mother clawing at the ground to dig up the dead horse. Again with the horse.
As I sit here typing, I realize there are SO many things that just don't make sense, or were not explained well enough to make sense. And then there is the ending. (Fade to black)
Somewhere in Time (1980)
It was a simpler time
And by that I mean 1980, not 1912.
I am 65+ years old so was a 20-something when this first came out. I love romantic movies then and still do now. I assume I liked it when I first watched it, but it isn't on my list of old movies I still like/love. Seeing some posts on TikTok lately made me decide to watch it again. OMG. What a mistake! This movie is SO bad. The acting, the writing, the ending! It is laugh out loud funny to me. I know it's romantic fantasy but all I could think about was how bad he must have smelled. One shirt, one suit. Even normally this would be a problem for a guy in a swanky hotel but he spent the night bound and gagged in the straw in a stable. And by knocking the lantern off the hook we are to presume he cut through the ropes with the pieces of broken glass?! Comedy at it's best. I can only assume Christopher Plummer had gambling debts to pay off. Of course, the late Christopher Reeve is so handsome and Jane Seymour radiates beauty but other than that this nonsensical movie has nothing to offer.
French Kiss (1995)
Why is this movie no where?!
That is the only reason l am here.
Yes, l love the movie. I own it in DVD form but WHHHHHHHHY is it not available to stream anywhere?!?! Not Netflix, not Prime, not Hulu, not Apple+, not Paramount etc. Since the 90's on New Years Eve, I have what I call my Meg Ryan film festival. When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless, You've Got Mail and French Kiss. I own them all but with the technology now available, I much prefer to just watch them with a click of my remote instead of playing around with a DVD player. What is the reason this film is not available?!
This 'required characters' idiocy is so very, very annoying.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Giving it 5 stars for nostalgia only
Easily 1 hour too long. Waaaaay to many 'chase' scenes: car, motorbike, truck, boat, train and oh yeah, plane! I am pretty easily amused. Not one to expect 100% realism in an action/adventure movie but you could have made a drinking game out of "Oh, come on!" I can't believe I have 321 characters to go before I can submit this thing. OK. Something else. This movie is VERY violent. A lot of characters get killed who are not main characters - like the 2
professors at the college. And Teddy handcuffing the guy to the gate under water??!! Yeah, I know he was a 'bad guy' but he was a thug. Just some muscle. To have this young kid basically murder him was awful and unnecessary. And I saw this with my adult son who has ZERO qualms about violence in movies, video games etc. And even he said "That was cold." And the ending was very...anticlimactic. A+ for the last 5 minutes but the actual end... WTF was that after 2-1/2 hours?!
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
The Love Is Gone is BACK!
For anyone who cares, Disney+ has released the FULL LENGTH version which includes "The Love Is Gone."
It makes me so mad every time I watch the 'new' version and that song deleted. I mean, it is all of 3 minutes long! I still can't believe they cut it. I read an article once about 'the why' and as someone who loves that song, it still made no sense to me. In any case, you need to go to the movie, then go to EXTRAS. There are 3 things under EXTRAS: the trailer, the song by itself (which was a lame attempt to appease people who like the song) and then "Full Length Movie." Once again, why you have to jump through hoops to see the FULL LENGTH MOVIE is beyond me. Why not put the "Deleted Scenes" version under EXTRAS. I hope this makes someone's holiday viewing more pleasant!
God bless us, everyone!
Gry rodzinne (2022)
4 episodes too many
I really enjoyed this for the most part. But once again, Netflix has drawn out what could be a great 3 or 4 episide show to a mind numbing 8. The characters are all interesting. I was disappointed in having the Professor go bat s**t crazy. I like strong, intelligent woman characters. I was looking forward to her leaving Emil for her own sake, not some dellusional fantasy. Didn't make sense to me.
I also don't understand why reviews need to be 600 charcters now. It makes you write stuff just to be able to submit a review! The ending, while a great cliff hanger, pissed me off, especially if there is no season 2!
Paranoid (2016)
Less a Police Drama than a Big Pharma rant
It was all I could do to get through this show, but I did. I have become a huge fan of British and Swedish police shows since I started watching them during the Pandemic. They are SO much better than American police shows. This one, however, is one of the worst I have ever watched. The character of Nina has single handedly set feminism back 20 years. She displays every kind of negative female stereotype in every episode. Crying over being dumped by her boyfriend, not because her heart is broken but because she wants a baby! Kissing her young new co-worker than saying it was a mistake! It was like watching an ABC After School Special back in the 90's. She has border line personality disorder and yet we are to believe she is a lead detective on the case. Berating a female she is interviewing that the way she is dressed is inappropriate because she is jealous over her talking to her new boy toy partner and not her?! In what world would that EVER happen?! They receive notification that someone they are desperate to find has been spotted!!! Everyone races to their cars, but wait! First, sitting in the car, she stops to tell her young. Heartthrob partner WHY she decided to become a police officer. To be clear, I am blaming the writing/directing and NOT the actress. And in the end, the ridiculously shoddy police work has nothing to do with anything because the whole point of this was to bash Big Pharma - and do not get me wrong, they NEED to be bashed - but seriously, a Jesus statue filled with pills in the lobby?! Come on now!
Blackhat (2015)
No subtitles?
Tried watching this on Netflix but for whatever reason, subtitles are not an option. I tried, but l couldn't watch it. Don't know if it's age related or watching SO much TV these last 2years but l have become dependent on them. Too bad. I think I would have like it.
Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)
For Rom-Com Lovers
I found this movie by accident on Hulu and I love it. I love it like I love "You've Got Mail", "Shakespeare In Love", and "French Kiss." These are MY type of movies and I will not apologize for my silly romantic heart. The only reason I did not give it a 10 are because there are more than a few 'holes' that even had me saying "Oh, come on now!" (Ireland to NYC and back in 48 hours and still looking drop dead gorgeous?!") But regardless of it's flaws, there were lines that brought me to tears and lines that make laugh out loud. That is my idea of a perfect movie.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Save Yourself!
If my review saves one person from wasting their time on this RIDCULOUS series. The title alone should be a clue that is, supposedly, 'satire' on The Girl On The Train, and Gone Girl etc. Fine, great. I can go with the flow. But to have the death/murder of a 9 year old child at the heart of this 'satire' is beyond horrible. In fact, that is what kept me watching. I was waiting for the "it's all a dream" nonsense. Something that would explain making her daughter's death the punchline to all this? She really WAS left alone by her father in a room with a serial killer who eats his victims?! That's not satire. That's sick.
Young Wallander (2020)
Just started watching...
I feel like I can't really give a fair review at this point but his voice! I hate his voice! It's too soft and whispery, no matter the situation. It just occurred to me now that it reminds me of Mark Lester in Oliver. And yes, l'm dating myself. I'm not saying he needs to sound like a 3 pack a day smoker, but it's very offputting to me.
Miseuteo Shunshain (2018)
20 on a scale of 1-10
I can only hope people get past the strange title for this wonderful show. And also don't get discouraged if you are confused at the end of episode 1. It all starts to make sense.
This show was just amazing. I learned so much about the USA and it's early history with Japan, Korea and Russia. But history aside, the stories of the characters is what kept me hooked! To say the last few episodes had me sobbing is an understatement. The candid pictures of the cast out of character at the end of the last episode made me feel better.
Finally, the cinematography in this film has blown me away. I am not someone who talks about things like 'cinematography' when I talk about movies. There were so many shots that were absolutely breathtaking. I would love to have a coffee table book of shots from this show. The word spectacular does not do it justice.
Atiye (2019)
Season 3 so disappointing
I really enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 was just a long road to nowhere, leaving a trail of unanswered questions. Ugh.
The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)
It's complicated.
How can you watch a movie made in 1996 in 2021 and not be pulled in every direction. Parts of this movie are ridiculous, parts are just awful, parts are gut-wrenching, parts I have lived through myself.
I am tired of Barbara Streisand trying (italics and underline)to be portrayed as NOT beautiful. She is gorgeous. She has always been gorgeous! I guess she was supposed to be overweight in this movie, but she was just wearing baggy clothes, but she STILL looked beautiful. She has always been beautiful. Those eyes, her lips, her cheekbones. Sure, the nose is her nose but it certainly doesn't make her ugly.
There is a deeper story in the movie than the character's looks. Again, in 1996, maybe it no one pulled at 'the loose thread', so to speak. But what was with the toxic relationship with her awful mother?! A fabulous performance by Lauren Bacall because I found myself grinding my teeth during most scenes she was in. It killed me when she did not add, "You ARE beautiful" after telling her she was a beautiful little girl. WHY is a Professor at Columbia still living with her perfectly healthy mother? THAT's the story. Instead, it's the 'ugly duckling' story and she ends up with not one but TWO handsome guys wanting her. Of course, Jeff Bridges loves her for who she is, not the new improved version.
I know this was a RomCom but there is an entire other story right there!
Wouldn't it have been nice if Barry (was that the name of little sad sack guy she kept canceling on?} ended up with a beautiful fiancé instead of a female version of himself - in keeping with the "It's all about looks" theme of the movie.
And what was with Pierce Brosnan's character suddenly lighting up a cigarette in the outdoor scene where he was telling her his wife left him. And then the two of them smoking in front of the fireplace. It was so totally bizarre. I think Big Tobacco paid a mighty 'product placement' fee for those two scenes.
I would recommend this movie to someone who needs to rehash some painful times in there life and look at them with a fresh perspective.
The Little Things (2021)
Great cast in terrible movie
I was so excited when I saw the ad for this movie! What a huge disappointment. It has to be said, in these Covid times, I will watch just about anything and am pretty darn easy to entertain. I wish I had kept a stroke tally of how many times I said "Oh come on!" or "This is stupid." When Jimmy got into Albert's car ALONE I almost turned it off but I looked and there was under 30 minutes to go.
I've read some of the positive reviews thinking maybe I missed something. Yeah, nope. You can speculate all you want about all the deep meaning behind the ambiguous ending and huge holes throughout this movie. The only question I have is how they got Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto to sign on to this movie. The script they read could not possibly have resembled the end product. I have to believe that.
Michael (1996)
Gets me EVERY time
I am sure I have reviewed this movie before, but I just watched it again, for the millionth time. I came here for some silly reason and am shocked by the low rating. If I had to guess, I will say there are some angry Christians out there not happy with how Michael is portrayed. On the other hand, I will say this movie does more to stir my deep seated, drilled into me by nuns for 12 years, want/need to believe, than ANY religious movie I have ever seen. There are so many scenes, some many small lines exchanged that are beautiful and touching. But when he brings Sparky back to life - I just can't explain how it touches me on so many levels. Regardless of how it makes ME feel, I would recommend this movie to anyone who just wants to watch a nice, sweet movie. I promise you, you will never hear Chain Of Fools again and not think about MICHAEL.
Reckoning (2019)
Worst ending of anything EVER
Not much else to say. I am truly aggravated that wasted my time on this show.
Cinderella (1965)
This is available on Amazon Prime!!!
I was just scrolling, scrolling, scrolling through Prime trying to find something, ANYTHING, to watch. My jaw literally dropped when I saw this appear.
Yes, it is dated and I'm sure no child today would find this entertaining because of it's simplicity. My post is for those of us of a certain age who grew up on this version. I fell under it's spell when I was in 5th grade and to this day I believe the waltz scene is what turned me into the hopeless romantic I am today. It is silly how happy watching this made me. Hoping anyone searching for this gem is able to find it and enjoy it AGAIN like the first time!
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Mandatory Halloween Viewing
This is a Halloween staple in my household! I just shake my head at the low reviews.
Parenthood (1989)
This should be required viewing
...for anyone thinking of having a child. The thing is, unless or until you have children, you just won't get it.
