Ted Lasso (2020)
Ted Lasso saved my life!
I do not exaggerate when I say that.
I was a latecomer to Ted Lasso but am currently on my third viewing of this beautiful show. It is a show loosely draped around the world of football, but is really about love, trust, forgiveness, and finding your way back. It has the greatest collection of, somewhat disfunctional, characters since Cheers. In a similar vein to Cheers, Ted Lasso shows us that family is not just what you're born into but also the people you are surrounded by. In both cases you often don't have any choice in who that is, but it's love that binds even if we're unaware of it.
I was struggling with addiction when I started watching this show and it helped me to forgive myself. It helped me be honest with myself and my family. It came at a tipping point in my life and it helped tip the scale toward recovery and redemption. As well as making me laugh my head off so much I had to pause at least twice an episode, it made me cry at least once an episode.
In summary; a beautifully written and performed piece of art. One of the funniest, and definitely the most heartwarming, tv shows I've ever seen. My girlfriend calls me Mike TV so you can be assured I have watched a lot.
Thanks Ted Lasso.
Luther (2010)
DROSS!
Talk about something being less than the sum if its parts, at least regarding the cast. So much talent but wasted due to writer, director, sound dept, and ultimately the producer, just trying too hard. Like they chucked in every ingredient from every great 'maverick cop' show or movie, but never had a clue what the recipe was.
Overacting, bordering on hammy at times, particularly Idris Elba's shouting. Way too much 'atmospheric' music which didn't leave any room for genuine suspense as you are bombarded with sound. Spinning camera work to ramp up what should be more sedate scenes anyway, such as conversations between police officers in the station!?
A real shame!
Doom (2005)
A poor man's Aliens
And I don't mean that in a bad way. If you wanna watch Aliens but you last watched it a bit too recently, then watch Doom. Firstly, it will satisfy your xeno-bloodlust. Secondly, the next time you wanna watch Aliens, you will REALLY wanna watch Aliens. And that's a good thing right? Damn right!
This Is England (2006)
This IS England!
Probably the most important and accurate film about this country in the last thirty years, if not more. Historically social documentary, modern day metaphor, and vision of the future are all contained in this absolute gem. Shane Meadows has made me look at this country, it's people and myself, and made me feel incredibly proud, and incredibly ashamed of it all in 102 minutes. A genuine tour de force.
