L.A. Confidential (1997)
Brilliant Movie Great acting and a Story what more can you ask for.
Great Movie and great story that I will not spoil.
Every character perfectly cast, you simply could not imagine anyone playing their roles better.
Another Spacey performance by Spacey, he is De Niro esque in his ability to play these characters, you simply get drawn in by this guy and never know what you are going to get.
Crowe gives another manly performance, totally believable as the guy who maybe hates himself a little but the women love.
Kim Basinger what can I say, loved the through the key hole look at the life of a high class hooker who's lifestyle disgusts you at times but then Kim makes you realise why so many men are putty in such women's hands, whilst they themselves always fall for the wrong guy.
Kim is stunning in this film while watching its hard to imagine a more beautiful siren, how could anyone resist.
Totally enjoyable few hours, cuddled up on the sofa with your own nearest and dearest for a romantic night in.
Elizabeth (1998)
Cate Blanchette at her best
Blanchette is brilliant as the brooding sultry Queen who is confused by the duties of honour state and family that beset her reign.
Blanchette at her best as she ages from ravishing beauty to haggered old Queen.
Unlike many movies this remains fairly accurate to historical fact.
I think that you need to understand a little of the historical context to enjoy this film to the fullest.
There seems to have been a glut of interest in the old Queens life as Queen Elizabeth the seconds reign has reached its 60th year, I found this one the most enjoyable.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Pretty awful miscasting by Woody.
Really disappointing, shocked that this film managed to recoup its budget.
I watched this film and kept hoping that something would happen it never did.
Another serious miscasting did not help, only Woody could pick someone as unattractive as Javier to be the object of so many beautiful womens desires. Was there no one like Johhny Depp, Brad Pitt or someone plausible to pick. Now I know that there will be plenty of middle aged women who will be swooning over Javier to most men he still looks like the creepy guy out of No Country for Old Men. Woody would have been better off casting himself as the romantic lead at least there would have been a bit of comedic Gonzo value to this dross.
Only in Television land and in the movies would this plot be plausible, I hope when I reach the end of my days I do not think of all the movies that I wasted part of my life watching, because this would be near the top of the list.
Mother India (1957)
Wonderful natural and educational story of Indian life ethics and culture.
Mother India is a wonderful natural and educational story of Indian life ethics and culture. It is enjoyed throughout many countries, and is a family favorite, not only in India, but I am told throughout the Arab world, and other Asian counties. The film is quite long, and a little slow to get started for many people who are used to just 90 minute films, but if you stick with it you will be rewarded with a brilliant insight into life as it was in India. In subtle ways it gives it takes you through, what virtues and values are important to people from another culture. Some wonderful cinematography that really does create an atmosphere of old India.
If you know nothing of Asian cultures, then this is one film that I would say that all people from the west should watch if they want to understand Asia and the values of its people, as they were nearly 100 years ago, and in many ways the values that those communities who live among you in the west, have inherited from their parents who migrated to the west during that time.
You have to be a little understanding, but it is a truly heartwarming film, one for a romantic educational night in with your nearest and dearest I would say.
Rob Roy (1995)
Really enjoyable Scottish historical romance.
Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but I watched this film cuddled up with my wife, I had no idea of the plot, although I had heard vaguely about Rob Roy the great Scottish hero.
The film never pretends to be an epic, and there are some beautiful performances by the actors. Liam Neeson in the lead and Jessica Lange, who looked stunning despite her bedraggled attire. Also Tim Roth is a thoroughly believable nasty piece of work.
I don't know how true the story line keeps to the historical context, films like Braveheart where the French Princess was actually only 4 years old when Wallace invaded England, had plenty of made up stuff in it.
However as a film this is really enjoyable, one for a romantic night in, with some excellent acting.
Alexander (2004)
Biggest mis-casting of a major role in movie history.
For the budget and amount of money that must have been spent on this film, it was ruined for me by some horrendous mis-casting.
Who thought that Colin Farrell who must weigh about 9 stone wet through, looks like a warrior. He is totally unbelievable as the commander of men and armies and seems to spend the whole film with terrified looking expressions on his face leading seemingly aimless charges from one part of the battlefield to another.
The battle of Gaugamela seems to have been exaggerated beyond anything any Greek Historian could come up with, history now shows that the numbers were a little more equal than the Greek version, and given that the Parthians and Sassanid's subsequently saw off 6 Roman invasions I tend to believe the revised version, that Alexander after defeating a minor border kingdom was forced to retreat from India, when an army nearly ten times the size of his own was on its way.
Where the film Troy for example delivers in both acting and plot, this film is such a disappointment on so many level. The only highlights were the narration and the use of a birds eye battle view camera shots which I thought was inventive.
Farrel wearing uniforms and armour particularly helmets that looked several sizes too big for him, made poor Alexander quite comical at times I'm afraid.
Whowever cast this movie should be sacked, next time do not cast an actor who looks like Mr Puniverse, and then allow him to look terrified throughout the whole movie as someone who is supposed to be a man who other men would follow to the ends of the earth.
The Ladykillers (2004)
Lovely gentle family comedy film with a twist.
This must have been a bit of a departure for Tom Hanks. I think in time this film will become a Christmas type classic, the type of heartwarming film that you can watch cuddled up as a family, provided you don't mind the occasional F word.
Being British, I think that the film fails to strike some of the vital chords of the original Ealing Classic.
Firstly Hanks could have been introduced to the movie as a potential killer, perhaps stalking Miss Munson to her home, the original was one of the first films I ever saw, and Alec Guiness looked like he was out to murder the old lady, when he first scowled around her home.
The minor members of the cast did not seem to get a look in with regard to the plot, the Lump character for example in the original shared a few tender moments with the old lady, which made him turn against the other hoodlums, why else would he decide to want to prevent the Professor from killing her in the end.
This film is not a quick gag a minute typical US comedy, and if you decide to watch with the family try and keep the plot a secret, as a youngster I really thought that the old women as well as her friends were going to get done in.
All in all a really enjoyable film, the scenes between Hanks and Irma Hall are particularly good.
Personally I think that this film is much underrated, because you have to be a little patient with it at the beginning. Tom Hanks has been great at pulling at our heart strings in many roles, but I actually think that this is Tom Hanks's greatest acting performance, it is for Hanks what the Awakenings was to DeNiro, and in time will be recognized as such.
