El guardián invisible (2017)
Great mystery thriller.
Closer to reality then a Sherlock Holmes on the one hand, but intriguing mystery blended in on the other. I do like the depth of the history/youth of the inspector, gives her more character and well acted emotions all the way. So this movie basically has several good points that could interest a broad audience. And it deserves it, good build up and pace, I'm sure many will enjoy this movie.
Mythica: The Darkspore (2015)
A dungeons and dragons fan must see!
Low budget excellent entertainment! I am a great fan of fantasy and dungeons and dragons (the game). Quite a lot of movies were made with D&D in mind. Some better than others, usually on a low budget and sometimes a bit too much wanting it to be "just like the game". This might give you the feeling that acting and the stage feel a bit forced. However in the Mythica series it is not as prominent, although visible every once in a while. But really get sucked in the story and forget to pay to much detail to the low budget scenes and environments. In a way a sort of nice "I could be there" feeling, which I like about these kind of movies. If you are in to fantasy and play dungeons and dragons you will not be disappointed! Watch these movies and enjoy! Don't expect blockbusting setups or scenes but let these actors and plot suck you in and entertain you.
Dark Moon Rising (2015)
Cool idea, shameful production
I like mystery, I like fantasy, I like hard plots or the more difficult movies. And I really, really tried to see past the unstable shots, the "thoughts spoken out loud"-thing. The "I have no idea where this movie is going to". And worst of all the CGI. But in the end, every filmmaker has to at least satisfy some niche of fans with something solid. This movie is not solid. Which is quite a shame, because the script and even the actors showed some promise. But an audience needs to be kept in focus, even if you want to keep some clues away until later. Scene hops to scene, without giving any red-thread, and it just keeps doing that. No solid story or connection is made. Too bad. Because now I have to advice people not to watch it.
OXV: The Manual (2013)
Most original idea in decades!
I only handed out a handful of "10's". This movie truly deserves it! Don't be scared by "romance" in the description if you don't like that in a movie. Although it's the red-thread, it's the mystery and science-fiction that is the main theme. The movie starts with some concepts while introducing the main characters as children. Some might be pushed away from the movie here because of the complexity of the concepts. But if you like mystery, philosophy and science and use your brain during a movie while being entertained: this is the best movie of the decade. I really can't think of any movie even coming close to such a brilliant and original one. Maybe "cube" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0123755/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ). But that's more of a thriller and completely different. Please watch this movie, you will remember it for the rest of your life.
Outpost 37 (2014)
Refreshing and exciting!
Fortunately, a lot of user reviews recognize the quality of this film now. It's very underrated (rates 4.8 while I type). It's the military documentary of grunts fighting for earth but their detailed little part in stead of a Scifi telling the story of the big picture. It keeps you entertained and moved, the documentary part gives you the feeling that you actually could follow this "live". For a Scifi, this is a quite realistic way of telling and living the story of what can happen in this type of military unit. Maybe there's no Micheal Bay type of explosions or gunfire, but to be honest it makes it even more believable. If you like realistic Scifi and a background story, you will not be disappointed! On the acting part, all of them deliver a great performance. The authenticity, emotions and expressions made watching this movie a great pass-time. Give this movie a chance people!
Indigenous (2014)
Worth your time, high quality for low budget
I'm not really a horror fan so when get ready to watch one I read some best and worst reviews on the movie to lower or raise my expectations. With this one the reviews were around 50/50 but not a lot of users. So I took the chance, watched it and will give my 2 cents. First of all, I was entertained and not bored a single minute. For that I would already rate above 5. The unknown actors almost seem to "grow" both in their role and performance as the movie progresses. Pretty decent performance, job well done. The setting, fear and tension are convincing as well as the reactions of the characters. The monster is realistic although it does look like a monster type of the descent movies like someone said earlier. All in all, it's a nice popcorn & beer movie to watch with your girlfriend to get a nice scare.
Tian jiang xiong shi (2015)
Painful and slow
Open-minded I started to watch this film and I did manage to watch until the end. And that says a lot. The whole movie is chaotic and makes you wonder if this was meant as a comedy or some kind of parody of the heroic tale. And that side-stepping and wondering destroys the experience of the movie. If not for the decent/OK action scenes and camera work, I would rate this movie a 1. Very disappointing, almost infantile. If the movie was indeed intended as a serious tale from history I would be even offended. Over the top clichés and chewed out plots of thirteen in a dozen, just dreadful. Too bad, I really like Jackie Chan movies, but more as an actor then producer.
After (2012)
Refreshing modern fantasy!
Very, very rarely I rate a 10. In this case I just had to because of the ridiculous 5,5 overall. And I don't even like romance movies! Normally I'm more "all for action and excitement" type of guy, but this title caught my eye via IMDb's "you might like this" object. So I took the risk and went out to catch a copy of the movie. Money well spent! Don't look at this movie as an action movie or complete fantasy fairytale. But look at this movie as the "this could also be an option" kind of film. You will know what I mean after you have seen it. So, even though I'm not the "drama", "romantic" or "fairytale" type and very much enjoyed this movie. Do not be fooled by some reviews that the acting was below average, because it was not!
Last Knights (2015)
Must see for fantasy lovers!
Absolutely brilliant movie. Everything adds up, the plot is solid, the twist and brilliant build up gives a great suspense. Unlike other fantasy or medieval movies, this movie goes into your mind and gut watching our hero. Especially in the middle part of the movie. I really think that is where this movie stands out in comparison with others. It's all about right and wrong and how code or honor behave around law and righteousness. And in a solid bonus to that you get fantastic sword fights and action. Some naggy negative complainers wrote about "why the lord is black and what do his Asian com-padres do in this world". Clearly they don't have a clue about fantasy and go blind on real medieval tales. This is not a tale of "medieval and magic" and why should it be? So ignore the negative comments about the setting. It is legit in fantasy terms and very well written I might add. Enjoy this movie and the great acting performances!!
Dracula Untold (2014)
How the unbelievable monster, now has his believable history!
Vampire films, I've seen a lot of them. It is that special brand of fantasy you either love or hate. If you love the genre, this movie imho is battling for the nr 1 position.
Of course, if you read some reviews here (typically from a country that plays a leading role in the movie haha) people don't seem to understand fairy tales, myths, fantasy or science-fiction. The number one review at the top even states that the facts don't add up according to history. Others even pull the "racism" card, saying this film encourages hate against the Turks (lol whut? Turk is not a race, it's a nationality). For everyone else that does understand that vampires do not exist in real life but are probably the biggest bad-asses in fantasy: watch this movie! It's fantastic action, drama, a story about how the good guy ended up being a creature of Satan. Never a dull second in the whole movie. Great cast and acting, convincing emotions and powerful screenplay. After years of average and bad Dracula movies, this one raises the bar for Dracula movies and hopefully lifts us to a new era of Nosferatu.
[Rec] (2007)
More hysterical then horrifying
The rating of the film and the reviews of some members here, made me decide to watch this movie. I agree with the most reviewers that the first minutes of the movie are boring and makes you think "hm, where's this going". Now I know that Spanish people can be loud and speak fast and with passion, but this was quite over the top. When the movie finally starts building up some "horror", people scream at each other, speak even more fast and lose control. It became so bad and distracting that i even had to turn down the volume. I might be prejudiced because I'm not the type that likes these "blair witch project" kind of movies. But even so, this movies is enjoyable but not worth the 7.5 star rating. If the professionals in this movie had a little more calmness or surviving attitude and if some of the bystanders wouldn't scream so much, then yes maybe I would give it a 6 or 7.
Real Steel (2011)
The ultimate father-son movie
This is it folks! For every father that has a son, please watch this move on his 12th birthday or even after that for that matter. This is about fighting your way back from humiliation, hard times and complete rock bottom. The absolute feel good movie of the decade. Sit back, hold tight and enjoy the ride to have a great movie experience with your family. Great acting by the whole crew, including the "vilians". Don't be scared to get a little sentimental and just let this movie guide you. It's action, it's drama, it's fighting the good fight! Of course it has been done before, but this is the new and improved version. Back to your instincts and a raw action/emotion flow for 2 hours, that any 30-50 year old man would understand. And probably theirs son's with equal excitement.
Spider (2002)
Excellent actors, unfortunately slow and predictable.
A number of reviewers rate this movie as "the best ever" and "masterpiece" etc etc. The point is that this movie is listed as a thriller, so you expect a thriller but it is not. It's more like a very slow, did I say slow? I mean a very very very slow movie about a man that lost his mind as a child. Although the acting is quite good and the setting of the movie very authentic, the slow pace is just annoying. And yes, even if you are a real fan of cult, drama and historic films. Do not believe people so easily that announce "the plot and climax of the film are fantastic". Half way the movie you already know what happened and why, if you are a fan of mysteries and thriller books and movies. If you liked "The Machinist" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/) for example, don't expect to like this one or think that this is in the same genre.
Battle of Los Angeles (2011)
Painful: a total lack of skills, creativity and technique.
The quality of this movie has nothing to do with low budget, but a complete lack of skills. From everyone. And it's not in the category "so bad, it makes you laugh" either. I'm actually angry that they made me waste at least 10 minutes of my life on this piece of c. Makes you wonder who actually paid someone to make this, was it a lost bet? A rich person that had it on his/hers bucket list? Not a blind person i guess, because even with your eyes closed the FX and dialog's suck. Your four year old niece could probably come up with a more creative idea for aliens after seeing Independence day. The actors must have known about the script and the concept before they signed, because they are of equal quality. Of course, being in so much pain after 10 minutes that i had to turn it off, i might not have seen the whole crew. Isn't there anything positive? Anything? Nope. Unless a few beautiful faces is enough for you. Oh, and isn't it a criminal offense to name the title almost identical to an actually good movie?
