The Ravine (2021)
A Bit Disjointed But Not Terrible
This movie was a little hard to follow. The flashbacks are too sporadic and abrupt. Joanna is reminiscent of Mother Abigail from The Stand but seems more like a Saturday Night Live spoof character than an homage. The cast are all good actors with established careers but I feel the script and direction failed them. The story is an important one to tell but the execution missed the mark for me. I watched the entirety of the film to see it through but it was a bit of a struggle to do so. It had the potential to be a blockbuster but left me with more of a dark, Hallmark movie vibe. Being that this was based on a true story, I would love to see it retold in a more cohesive manner. The styling and cinematography were well done. I will give it that. I do think it's still worth a watch because it touches on mental health struggles and understanding grief which are two topics that everyone needs to talk about more often to help with the stigmas attached to both.
The Undoing (2020)
Phenomenal
What a fabulous cast! Though I was able to guess the twist very early on (I'm autistic so I see patterns and can put pieces together quickly) it was satisfying to watch it unravel. The moment of revelation was exciting for me because I got it right. Even if you think you know the outcome, give the show your time because it is beautifully done. It's giving, Damages meets Broadchurch. Right off the hope you will be invested. Don't take anything for granted while watching. Not every thing is as it seems. Even though I guessed the twist early on, for most people I think it will blow their minds. Great job.
Gone in the Night (2022)
A decent movie.
I liked it. I had it in my watch list for a while and had been debating giving it a go. I watched despite the poor rating, knowing that neither Winona nor Dermot would connect themselves to a crappy script. Admittedly I was able to call the twist about halfway through, but I still enjoyed watching it unfold. It's a cool concept. With so many reboots and remakes, it was nice to have some original content. I would recommend giving this movie a chance. Ignore the bad ratings and judge for yourself. If you still don't enjoy it then, fair enough but give it a go and you may be pleasantly surprised.
Barbie (2023)
It's not what you think.
I am a MASSIVE and lifelong Barbie fanatic. I went in to this movie absolutely pumped. I came out of the movie blown away. Typical of Barbie, she blew me away with the absolute depth of her message. America Ferrera's monologue in Barbie Land had people clapping in the theatre. I appreciated it as a Mother, daughter, sister, wife and human being. The truth bombs she dropped got me right in the feels. I know. You are likely rolling your eyes and balking at the sheer IDEA that a BARBIE movie could be in any way profound. I say to you, you must not REALLY know Barbie then. This really was, if I think about it, in true Barbie fashion. Well done, my lady. Well done.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities: The Viewing (2022)
No idea what I just watched
I have been absolutely loving this series. I have to say though, this episode was terrible. I kept hoping something would happen. It did but it was just...I don't even know. The music is obnoxious and the whole thing is a lot of build up for a whole lot of nothing. All for Sci-fi and political art but I feel like this tried so hard to be both that it was just a mockery. Maybe I missed the plot. I always try to keep an open mind but I just honestly have no idea what this episode was about or was trying to achieve. Great cast, garbage story. I suspect I will be confused perpetually by this as I don't see myself watching it again.
Peter Pan & Wendy (2023)
A wonderful new take on a classic.
Peter Pan is my absolute favourite story. Is this movie different that the original? Sure, but different isn't bad. I loved the spirit of inclusiveness and the message of love behind this version. To get a back story for Hook and Peter was really cool. It's about love, family, inclusion and forgiveness.
The cast was awesome. Everyone did a fabulous job in their roles.
I love that it was filmed in Newfoundland as it really does look like Neverland. Such a beautiful landscape. As a Canadian I get so excited to see our beautiful country being showcased in TV and film.
Go into watching this with an open heart and don't compare to previous versions. I think you'll like it.
The Hustle (2019)
Lighthearted and funny.
Is this movie Oscar worthy? No. It's cheesy and cliché but that doesn't mean it's bad. Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson deliver, as always. It's got some good laughs and a decent story. The two main actors are a great team. They play well off of each other and have great comedic chemistry. If the movie starred two men, it would have higher ratings I'm sure. That's the sad truth. The twist in the story was handled well too. I can usually predict most twists but this one actually got me by surprise. It's the perfect sick day movie. It lifted my spirits which really is all you can ask for a slapstick, caper type movie. It's worth a watch For sure.
Pieces of Her (2022)
Loved every moment!
The cast of this series is phenomenal! I see other reviewers saying it was hard to follow but I didn't find that to be true. The story is very interesting. Yes there are flashbacks but they are not disjointed. I watched the whole series over two days while I was sick in bed. It was very entertaining. The story grabs you right from the beginning . It's like a book that's so good you can't put it down. In fact, I will go and buy the book now and read it as well. Over all everything was done very well. I wouldn't change a thing. Don't listen to the bad reviews, give the series a chance. I think you will enjoy it.
We Can Be Heroes (2020)
Super cute!
Is it cheesy? Absolutely. But so was Shark Boy and Lava Girl and all the Spy Kids movies. These are just the right amount of cheese. If you are watching this expecting an Oscar worthy film then you will be let down. If you watch this expecting some lighthearted fun, you will be pleased.
To the Beat! (2018)
Cute story but eye gouging acting
My 9 year old loves this movie. It's cute but I couldn't handle the acting. Looks like they live in a massive house in the Hollywood hills but the single Mom needs two jobs to pay the bills. Wouldn't want to sell that house and live within your means so you have more time for your kids or anything. Yes I realize it's made up but come on people.
Katy, la oruga (1984)
A childhood favourite!
I was 3 years old when this movie was released. My parents would rent it for me over and over again. I have been looking for a copy of it for YEARS as I would love to show it to my children.
I have vague recollections of the story itself but I have strong emotional ties to it as I watched it hundreds of times.
Scratch (2015)
Awesome action, funny and a killer twist ending!
Attended a screening of this film and it is AWESOME! The story grips you from beginning to end and the twist ending will blow your mind! Highly recommended! This is a movie you will want to watch again and again to catch pieces and clues you may have missed the first time around. If you love the Usual Suspects, you will flip for Scratch! The actors do an amazing job of storytelling and roping in the audience with their dynamic performances. You will be begging for a sequel once you are done! Kudos to the entire cast and crew for a job well done. This film takes Canadian films to the next level and dispels the misconception that Canadian films are not as good as American films.
