Self Reliance (2023)

Solid 6, not a total waste of time.
14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Tommy has to be within a few feet of someone at all times, his family doesn't believe him, and so he teams up with another contestant. BUT...since both contestants are being hunted then they could be killed together, right? Maddy's presence is irrelevant, she's not someone that could be innocently injured.

That plot hole haunts me all throughout the movie, doesn't even matter how it ends. All real, not real, half real, whatever, it's a giant hole in the plot.

The idea of this movie was great, but best case would've been Tommy and James attached at the hip with Maddy as a peripheral character.

I really do appreciate the Delusions of Grandeur nod, there are people in my life that they think they're the main character in EVERYONE's life. Literally everyone. Including Carrie Underwood and the President. Any President, every President.

Not as advertised
11 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The title is "Commune or Cult" but it's really not about people wanting to join after 10 days, it's about people wanting to learn if they can live "off the grid" for 10 days. (As off the grid as you can be with cell phones.)

Even if they could stay they don't really want to, they just want to live outside for 10 days. It's got The Simple Life vibes, but it's more scripted than that.

Other people say they focus too much on if it's a cult but I think it's just a common question the producers ask, no one is focusing them on making them say "cult".

Oh! And Tree? He's the common thread in all problems. He's a child that gets what he wants. Because that's what the script says.

Air time & coverage is so important
8 August 2023
But why are you going to dedicate episodes to someone that abused the missing person, last to see them, took the hotel room key away, and didn't bother to listen to the last VM before pretending to look for them?

Victim left VM saying she was leaving, but perp didnt listen since she was outside so he went out there to talk. Perp made sure she didn't leave by taking hotel & car keys.

Where's the disconnect in logic y'all? She wanted away, he wasn't having it. If he can't have her then no one will, and now he gets all the attention & sympathy his narcissism needs to fuel his life. He cries about how hard he works to find her but he doesn't actually do any looking. He knows where she is, he put her there.

(The above is speculation & for educational purposes only.)

Empowering to teenage women
21 April 2023
It seems that a lot of the show is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. And if folks want to comment about how it's far removed from the movie(s) that's OK too, because it is. It's supposed to be. Those same folks are upset that it's empowering to women & that's a shame. You gotta love folks that out themselves as misogynists & willing victims of the male patriarchy. It's disappointing but at least they're admitting it now.

The musical numbers are fun, the singing is great, the acting could be improved. Not everyone on the screen is great. I look forward to seeing the characters grow & continue to highlight just how awful it is to be a person of color and/or a woman.

I really love the folks complaining about accuracy, because the car flying off into the sky at the end of the movie is SO accurate to the time. LOL.

Mind-numbingly boring
27 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Talented actors, beautiful cinematography & a potentially great storyline. But for all that is holy, it's so boring. It takes a full hour before the storyline actually begins.

95% of the first hour is unnecessary debauchery but you keep watching & you're not yet bored because you keep hoping for something exciting to happen. (Spoiler alert: nothing exciting happens the whole movie!) But it appears they only included the debauchery for attention & to elongate the film. I don't know why they would think that a film of this length needed that first hour of practically zero related content.

For some reason the remaining 2+ hours of the movie is painstakingly slow & devoid of interesting content or entertainment. It gets a 2 for the elephant & the boobs.

Why?!
30 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watched it because I love Aubrey Plaza, I'd watch her in literally anything. But this isn't a "what did I just watch?" movie. This is a "why does this movie even exist?" movie. I wish there was something good to say about it, but even the acting was bad. It's supposed to be silly & over the top but instead it's just bad.

The storyline is very odd in the way that it keeps you on the fence for Beverly Luff Linn's purpose and it's a buildup to literally the most disappointing possible experience. You can't convince me that the reason Beverly grunts so much is because the writers couldn't think of any actual dialogue for the character. You could probably remove all of the dialogue and the movie wouldn't be any better or worse. You could probably watch this movie with zero sound and it wouldn't affect the quality.

Read a spoiler recap of the movie & save yourself the confusion & disappointment.

Incredibly slow
18 January 2023
If you like shows or movies that are slow-burns then this is the right show! I think a lot of people could feel that slowness in early episodes and realized it wasn't going to pick up. And maybe they noped-out early. I can't blame them. I watched the series in 3-episode spurts, and then waited a few weeks to watch the final episode.

I love seeing Carell in non-comedic roles & he was excellent as Alan, Gleeson as Sam though? I can see his haunting face when I close my eyes. The backstory that gets interspersed seems a little unnecessary, but I get that they want us to better understand Carell's character arc.

All in all, this is one of the best mini-series I've seen in a long time. And I'll never need to watch it again. Once was enough. (That's a compliment, FYI.)

Incredibly Predictable & Cheesy
3 December 2022
There are so many shows/movies/themes overlapping here that you'll be able to figure out exactly what's going to happen next. Protagonist, Darby, is likeable but flawed. Antagonist, Capri (Capricorn), is insecure & vapid.

Outcast vs. Popular, Mean Girls style. Complete with their own version of Aaron Samuels. There are also themes from Heathers (OG, I've never seen the new one), Bring It On, 10 Things I Hate About You, She's All That...Just about any other early 2000's movie you can think of including the TV show Ghost Whisperer.

But here's why I gave it an 8: it's supposed to be all of those movies. All of the clichés are obviously intentional, and the acting really isn't that bad. I even teared-up at one point, just a sweet moment between two characters that was unexpected.

Final advice: watch it with your teens if they're allowed to hear some swear words or watch it when you're laid up on the couch with a cold (like I am). It wasn't a bad way to spend a few hours.

Can't somebody catch a break?!
4 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, can ANYONE catch a flipping break on this show? Y'all know that book/tv series with kids where something awful is always happening? And it's frustrating as all get out because NOTHING ever works to anyone's favor? Well. This is a sibling to that series. Much more adult & much more frustrating. It's SO GOOD though. Much better than the kids because they knock it out in just 4 episodes & don't drag it along.

There better be a season 2, though I don't know if I'd want a bit of continuation of the Vicar's nonsense (just to tie up some loose ends), or just a clean break into a new storyline with Grieff. To be honest, it doesn't really matter. I'll watch it no matter what. If not for anyone or any other reason but Dillon.

Good so far!
5 October 2022
I never saw The Rookie so I have a feeling a lot of the negative reviews are comparing this show to its predecessor(?). But not having any preconceived notions about the show seems like a good thing to me: I'm enjoying it so far!

There are so many drama cop/fbi/csi procedural shows these days & this is definitely not one of them. It's more light-hearted than those shows & I love that!

Niece Nash is such a talented actor, I'm excited to see where she takes this character & how they're going to flesh out the storyline. The best part of a storyline that doesn't fit the real-world narrative (of real FBI rookies) means it could go anywhere from here! =)

Solidly Entertaining
28 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was worried when I saw how long this movie was, but having just finished it, I understand. And I would consider it a mindless teenage movie until the twist that I really didn't see coming!

I hated the ending, seemed off brand for the characters, but that's OK because not every movie has ever been perfect.

I'm not mad I watched it but I would recommend you don't expect too much, don't put too much thought into everything or you'll ruin it for yourselves. And DEFINITELY don't watch if you hate cuss words or you're gonna have a really bad time. **Really** bad time.

Drugs & alcohol are also mentioned/consumed, and it seems kind of like Gossip Girl in the way that rich kids just make illegal (or illegal to them) substances appear.

Boring!
3 September 2022
This movie was trying so hard to give graceful endings to some characters, trying to refresh older characters, trying to make some characters relevant again.

The plot was so incredibly boring I had to break the movie up into watchable parts just so I could eventually finish it. There was no way I could watch it all at once. Thank goodness I didn't see it in a theater, I would've been hard pressed not to pathetically eat my way through 10 buckets of popcorn.

I would say not to waste your time watching it but if you're a fan of the series then you might as well check it off your list. This movie is a forced labor of love for somebody but us fans have all forced ourselves to watch it.

Moving, if you allow yourself to be moved
30 July 2022
If you want to watch this movie from the outside in then it's easy to do because the tragedy referenced didn't occur. But immersing yourself in this story & allowing yourself to remember the emotions of tragedies that did occur will greatly change how you experience this movie.

The acting was well done, Mia Isaac is a powerful force. Don't watch this as an observer, try to place yourself in the footsteps of these characters. Any of them. All of them. Whatever. Just try it.

SO BORING
2 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know why they had to make this the most boring movie ever-there were so many opportunities to explain why the princess was a badass in the first 10 minutes but instead they made us relive at attempt at The Matrix.

I give credit for a few good acting performances, they're not really that bad, but for all that is HOLY could we get a plot!?!

Boring
2 May 2022
If you're a fan of Batman then you'll be bored. If you're not a fan of Batman then you'll be bored. This movie is unnecessarily long.

It's not the worst movie ever so it can have some stars. And if you time your breaks for the bathroom, popcorn, a smoke, whatever, then you won't notice how painfully slow this movie is.

How We Roll (2022)

So stiff & forced. And inaccuracies even in subplots
25 April 2022
As someone who knows the bare minimum of bowling & can see the problems others have mentioned, the hair salon is still the most inaccurate of all. Not even the on-set stylists didn't have a friend to weigh in on a regular salon? If there are going to be glaringly obvious inaccuracies in the main plot you should be able to at least shore up the regular function of a hair salon. Or just avoid them altogether.

I don't see the show lasting more than a season & that's unfortunate! I had such high hopes but these actors are so stiff with each other. It's like they're just meeting for the first time on set in every scene.

Bring back The Unicorn, send this one back to the drawing board.

Excellent overview of the insurrection & history of ignorance
12 February 2022
The only people giving this a low rating are those that can't see the forest because the trees are in the way.

This series explores how the ignorant & uneducated people are happy to be ignorant & uneducated. There are interviews with people that have thought for themselves, left their safe spaces, and educated themselves on literally everything the world has to offer.

Max built his fame on public shaming
28 December 2021
Max wouldn't be interesting enough if he hadn't built his whole career on public shaming. Why would he direct anything that highlights public shame in a negative way as if his own public shaming behavior didn't actually happen.

Airbags weren't required in cars prior to 1998
21 March 2021
If the cars were sold in 1998 then there would be no airbags. I'm sure Lulu's car should've had one, but we don't know about the other vehicle.

It's cute
9 February 2021
It's just a cute show. If you like the actors/actresses enough to not care about what roles they play then you'll like it. It's not great but it's entertaining enough. I look forward to the new episodes, but I don't go looking for them.

Appreciate the updated version because they really gave it a good go!
6 February 2021
Don't know what westsideschl6 is on about, captions are there for this hard-of-hearing lady.

Of course it'll never be as good as the original, no one expected it to be, but it also doesn't need to be compared either as it sits well on its own.

The show is fun, and a pretty great homage to the original we all (well, most of us) grew up with. I can't wait for the next season!

I wanted to like this-what a great cast!
13 December 2020
But even with a great cast they couldn't escape the script. The script was horrible. Not just predictable, which it was, but seriously terrible. Shouldn't they be trying to write scripts to portray ways people normally interact or speak with each other? Because this script is like teaching a 6 year old how to read. Very basic words and concepts, very slow, and ultimately gets the job done. But was it a job well done? Nah, not at all.

3 stars for the cast-shameful that the writers didn't use them to their full capabilities.

I quite enjoyed it
26 September 2017
I set it to record on a whim & went in with no preconceived notions. I'm only a casual watcher of The Big Bang Theory so I appreciated this look at Sheldon's background & really liked the actress who portrays Sheldon's Mom. I would definitely watch future episodes & hope there are some on their way!
