Near-zero relevance to the concept/book
15 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
As a movie, this is just about less than OK. As to why the film maker chose to have the name "kamasutra" in the film title is pretty obvious. 1. To grab attention 2. To get international recognizability 3. To get everyone interested enough to buy a ticket

Unfortunately, the storyline has absolutely no relevance to the philosophy of the ancient Indian book. Just having a total of 7 dialog lines which are nothing but snippets from the book, does not make it a Kamasutra tale.

However, international audiences would find novelty in the film simply because of its portrayal of Indian colors/settings/customs (albeit with a creative license). However, film audiences who have seen enough movies will know a good film when they see one and this one will not be part of that list under any circumstances.

Yes, the name and imagery may be enticing but if you watch the movie without expecting a great deal, you would be on safe ground.

Worth watching just for the dialogs!
5 September 2005
Watched this movie late on a Sunday night into Monday morning in spite of having to get to work early the same morning! But i dare say, that it was worth the late night.

The movie has as much to do with the basic principles of life today as with the futuristic aspect. The human spirit/mind remains the same all through.

Challenge the "rules", work hard, never give up and all the other so called "cliche's" find a place in this movie. But its not cloying and nauseating as other Hollywood productions.

Ethan Hawke lends the character a lot of humanness and Jude Law, as usual is always good with his English accent (which kind of works, for his character in the movie) I thought this might be a lot of futuristic hogwash mambo-jumbo but it is a plausible premise. The plot is thin but nevertheless, the underlying motifs makes one think and believe in oneself.

Watch it! (even the credits.. there's something in the end of it!)

Worth a dekko!

I had read about this movie on IMdB and have been wanting to watch it ever since. To be frank, after watching it, i was not ecstatic but wasnt disappointed either. A lot of nuances have been left unsaid. Gus van Sant is capable of much better. But on the whole the movie is watchable on account of the new comer [Rob Brown] and of course Sean Connery himself, though i must add, there's not much scope for his acting prowess here. This is a "coming of age" movie ... a "follow your heart" kinda theme.. within the backdrop of the Bronx. Bottomline: Worth a watch without expecting wonders!

Not worth it despite the title!
13 February 2004
If u have watched as many movies as i have, (and i imagine anyone who is 29 years old would have watched atleast 5 whodunnits and courtroom dramas of different varieties), this movie does not cut it. If you are interested, let's get together and make it fun by pointing out the maximum no. of holes in the courtroom argument dramatic sequences. C'mon, one doesnt even have to know how to spell L.A.W for gaping at the huge hollows left in the scripting of the court sequence. And the shots of a white gloved hand opening door knobs is oh so..yawn!

You may read a lot of reviews saying this is an OK thriller. Ask me, i rented it because i read those! It aint worth it!

Good but the TV version is better
10 February 2004
Modern day life contemporises this Ludlum tale written way back in the 80's. The car chase sequence in Paris is the highlight of the film reminiscent of The Italian Job and Ronin. Matt Damon goes through his part almost lifelessly compared with Richard Chamberlain in the TV version. Same goes for Franka Potente (Run Lola Run) who is the female interest, compared to Jaclyn Smith in the TV version again. The TV movie was a better translation of the book.

Suggest, get your hands on the TV movie first and then watch Damon's Bourne. You will know what i mean.

Cutting-edge thriller!
10 February 2004
Although french, this movie is better than most hollywood churned wannabes. A gripping thriller with a slightly outlandish plot revolving around genetics and nazism. But dont let that turn u off. The film is absolute edge-of-the-seat fare. Jean reno is good as usual but vincent cassel dishes out excellent acting nuances which add to his character. Great acting! The scenes set in winter among the French Rhone Alpes are breath taking to say the least. The thrills keep on coming without having to take resort to loud background music, which make these moments even more rivetting. The english dubbing is good without too many quirks. RECOMMENDED! [Writing "Highly Recommended" would make you biased! ;-)]

Intense drama! Nice.
10 February 2004
This movie sets up Cruise for the role in The Firm. Fine acting by all involved. Nicholson is the best among the lot though. His dialogue delivery was always good, here its the best! Courtroom sequences do not have the traditional courtroom kind of drama since this is a court martial! But all the same, the razor sharp dialogues are a treat to watch.

Nothing great but a recommended watch
10 February 2004
i read loads of reviews on this film before going out and renting it. And i was pleasantly surprised, given my avg expectations from this film. Given the year when this was made, this film is a good gripping tale. The last 10 mins does throw it away a lil bit but the movie is worth watching. Gere, as the suave corrupt cop and Garcia as the IAD investigator are great.William Baldwin as a troubled wife beater was good too. The movie does have its gripping moments which are a bit superficial to be brutally frank but all the same its a decent 2 hours spent. Note the climax for Gere's dialogue delivery.

Nothing great but Recommended watching.
