Facing the Giants (2006)
A "Giant" of a movie
"Facing the Giants" is about more than a rival football team's name that they face at the end of the film. It's about facing your own DOUBTS, FEARS, and anything that keeps you from succeeding.
Having those same doubts and fears myself, (I'm overweight and have been trying to lose for years, albeit with little success), I know how the character Brock Kelley felt when he did those "death walks" and wanted to quit. It's so easy to quit. Like the coach said near the end of the movie, it's when your at your lowest, your most exhausted, that you're really put to the test. Isn't that the truth!!
I found myself crying sometimes during this movie, and cheering at the good things that happened. This is a movie that definitely deserved a NATIONWIDE audience, not a "select theater" one. Its message is a clear and loving one: God is there for you, no matter what. Just be humble enough to believe and He will do miracles.
If you haven't seen this movie, please do. If you know of someone who isn't Saved, share this movie. You never know. God works in mysterious ways. Maybe your sharing this movie is one of them.
God bless.
Fahrenhype 9/11 (2004)
"FahrenHYPE 9/11" delivers!
Before I begin, I'd like to state for the record that I'm a conservative Republican and that I didn't see "Fahrenheit 9/11" for which reason THIS movie was made, which may make my commentary one-sided, but since I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004, I feel it'd be unnecessary to tell you that I think "Fahrenheit 9/11" is garbage.
Michael Moore. You either love him, hate him, love to hate him, or hate to love him. Either way, he's a part of Americana, just as is the Mustang and Rock-n-Roll. He can either infuriate you, or leave you in awe. His ability to bring people to stand up and cheer (or boo) is exceptional. As, too, is his INability to tell the truth or remain on one track. His contradictive mannerisms are evident in almost, if not every documentary he makes, as are his one-sided (usually left-winged) observations.
In "Fahrenheit 9/11", Mr. Moore attempts to show (and tell) us that Pres. Bush was languid about the al-Qaeda and made no attempt to help fight the enemy. Instead, sending soldiers, or as I'm sure Mr. Moore would happily call them, "Bush's henchmen", to do his dirty work for him.
In the opening scene of "FahrenHYPE 9/11", Michael Moore openly claims that terrorism doesn't really exist; that 9/11 was just a freak accident, apparently. Later in the film, he even goes so far as to tell Ed Koch, former mayor of New York City, that Americans were making too much of a fuss about the incident! That there was a better chance of being hit by lightning than being involved in a terrorist attack! He even went so far in his movie as to blame 9/11 on Bush! Well, apparently Mr. Moore forgot about what's happened while BILL CLINTON was President. . . .
He forced Israel to let Mohammed Atta go free. Terrorist pilot Mohammed Atta blew up a bus in Israel in 1986. The Israelis captured, tried and imprisoned him. As part of the Oslo agreement with the Palestinians in 1993, Israel had to agree to release so-called "political prisoners". However, the Israelis would not release any with blood on their hands. The American President at the time, BILL CLINTON, and his Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, "insisted" that all prisoners be released. Thus Mohammed Atta was freed and eventually thanked the U.S. by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center. This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified. It was censored in the U.S. from all later reports.
Well, whether or not you choose to believe "FahrenHYPE 9/11," it's sure to make you think. It may not change your opinion, but at least you'll have a more objective view of what America really thinks.
And next time Michael Moore makes a documentary and tries to tell you what to think, ask yourself this: Is he telling the TRUTH, WHOLE, and NOTHING BUT? Nah.
Superman Returns (2006)
Superman Returns -- To Theaters After 19 Year Absence
First of all, I would've given it 10/10 stars, but I like to keep my critiquing open.
I saw this movie on July 1, 2006 and LOVED it!! The pace is quick and the score from the 80s versions is back, which I really missed.
Brandon Routh is quite good at playing Superman. He has that air about him that tells you he's not perfect, but just wants to fight for what's right. That's what I like about the "real" versions of him. The comic makes him out to be way too arrogant and self-assured, and the cartoon sorta brings that to life (although the most recent cartoon "Superman: Brainiac Attacks" did well in keeping him more human.) His Clark Kent is good too.
Lois Lane has moved on... with kid in tow. Yep, looks like Lois has been "busy" while Supes was away. Or was she (as you'll find out)? I think Kate Bosworth makes for a nice Lois, although I feel "Smallville"'s Erica Durance really brings out the feistiness much better and the chemistry would probably be better, too, since she and Brandon are 2 yrs. apart in age.
James Marsden (Second Noah, X-Men 1-3) plays Richard White, nephew of Perry White and fiancé to Lois. He does a good job being the so-called man in Lois' life, even tho it's obvious that she still has the hots for the Boy in Blue.
Kevin Spacey is hellishly good as Lex Luthor. He's definitely not the same Lex we remember from the '80s, played by Gene Hackman. This Lex is evil, sophisticated, and isn't afraid of showing why he's the #1 baddie in DC Comics.
All in all, I'm glad I saw this movie. It's definitely worth watching if you're a Superman fan.
Westworld (1973)
What you don't know CAN kill you. Especially my review of it.
I just saw this movie for the first time tonight (Fri., April 7, 2006) on TCM and WOW! I was born in 1973 when the movie first came out, so I had no chance to see it originally.
Here are some things about the movie you might find interesting:
1) Yes, Star Trek fans, that's Majel Barrett-Roddenberry as Miss Carrie.
2) Even the animals are robots.
3) James Brolin's character, John Blane, is killed by Yul Brynner's.
I found Yul's character to be eerily similar to Arnold's Terminator (the first one).
If you can get this on DVD, do so. You'll love it.
Humongous (1982)
"Humongous" disappointment (Directors don't yell "LIGHTS!!" for nothing, ya know!)
Well, what can I say... "B"-movie status would've been an IMPROVEMENT for this movie! I watched this one in fast forward, mostly, and didn't miss much, if anything at all. The only part worth watching was when they find the diary kept by his mother. At least it'll explain the plot which, by the way, is lame: This woman gets raped and takes up residence (from what I can tell) on the same island she was raped on. Her son ends up as a cross between Norman Bates and Frankenstein. He eats anything in site and apparently wasn't well-treated as a child because of his malformation.
But look on the bright side... you'll always have some dumb kids who just happen to be too nosy for their own good stumble on a DESERTED island (gee, how original *sigh*) and drink too much and start doing stuff they shouldn't.
I think I'd have had more pity for the monster if he wasn't put in such dreary lighting conditions (how do you expect to be scared by something you can't see that well?!?!) The only thing I did enjoy from this film was the ending, because that meant it was over. Don't spend your money buying this one unless you can get it for $1.00 or less.
The Secret of the Sword (1985)
An unknown past, an unfavorable present, and a destiny waiting to be fulfilled.
Jarred from her sleep by dark memories of the past, the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull is guided by a magical sword, a sword fashioned much like He-Man's, to a room whose doors have been closed for as long as she can remember. It is at that moment the sword reveals its purpose and the Sorceress realizes it is time for the true heir to the sword to emerge. But she cannot accomplish her goal alone, for she cannot leave the vicinity of Grayskull and retain her powers. So she calls on Prince Adam/He-Man to assist her. And there is where the adventure begins. . . .
It's easy to tell this movie was made in the 80's because of it's animation. But that aside, this is a cool movie about faith, hope, and love. It's a somewhat difficult movie to find, both in the stores and online, but if you can find it, it's worth watching.
The Black Hole (1979)
A hole in space. . . an adventure waiting to happen!
After years of searching unsuccessfully for other inhabitable planets, the U.S.S. PALOMINO heads back to Earth. But while on its way, it gets damaged and is in need of repair. Luckily, the crew discovers a ship that is, amazingly, hovering outside the grip of a black hole! It turns out it's the long lost CYGNUS! After landing, the crew meet Dr. Hans Reinhart and his "bodyguard", Maximillian, a large and intimidating red robot. They explain their situation and are treated to dinner while the drones on board tend to the PALOMINO. But the crew quickly finds out that things aren't what they seem on this "ghost ship", and when it's over, nothing will be the same!
