Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Stop whining - just because the name is Penny Dreadful, it doesn't mean it's a sequel
All I see here in reviews is whining about this new series not being a continuation of the first Penny Dreadful. Never mind that would be difficult with dead protagonists. If they took the "PD" part out of the name, you wouldn't have had anything to post about. STOP whining, the only thing this new show shares with the original Penny Dreadful is two words in the name. Deal with this new show by itself. It is a stylistic period piece, masterfully composed and photographed, richly produced using a blend of beautifully dressed sets combined with seamless practical and digital effects, and gets better every episode. Try the 3 episode rule. If you don't like a series after the first 3, fine. Just stop whining.
Speed Demons (2018)
Conspiracy theory nonsense
This film is not a journey of discovery, but a convoluted mess trying to find a way to the conclusion the filmmakers are trying to shove down your throats. So-called experts (really, Matt Gaetz? The most ridiculed member of Congress? And for good reason?) try to link drugs to mass murderers. Where are the other examples that don't have drug prescription histories? I dislike the rapacious drug companies for gouging the American public, but not enough to swallow this load of nonsense.
The Expendables 2 (2012)
Threadbare plot holding together overblown action sequences
This is my first review, I felt I had to ask the voters who gave this such a high rating if they watched the same movie that I did. This is probably the most "cringeworthy" movie I have watched in recent memory. The over-the-hill gang rides again, and it's not pretty. Literally. As in facial surgery gone bad not pretty. Shooting up from a downwards angle, Stallone's tucked up eyebags make him look Asian. VanDamme really needed to keep his sunglasses on to hide a face that looks like Joan Rivers in the morning. And like most movies centered around the action, the thin plot exists just to string the over-the-top action scenes together. These guys shoot more automatic fire than all the A-Team episodes combined, with only slightly better results. If you want to see action done the right way, watch any of the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, not this overblown nightmare. And the dialog? Jokes about the stars' action hero characters fall flatter than week-old soda, why couldn't they hire better writers? Was all the budget spent on ammunition? Score this one a big miss.
