Manhunt (2024)
Hoped For More
It's watchable but disappointing so far. There seems to be an agenda but its not in pursuit of accuracy or balance.
For instance: Stanton is well known to anyone with a passing interest in the civil war. His relationship with Lincoln was...complicated. Frosty at times. Sure, he went after the conspirators with a vengeance. But his motives for doing it were probably more political than emotional.
In Manhunt (2eps in) he comes across as a lugubrious fan boy to his slain idol. It's weird.
The showrunner supposedly did some research for this project. I'm really wondering what she read. A broad knowledge of the subject is not apparent yet.
Here's hoping for some nuance in the depiction of Edwin Stanton and a more accurate and balanced treatment of the time period in the later episodes.
Captive State (2019)
Terrific - Intelligent, powerful Science Fiction
If you are a fan of smart, intelligent Scifi, you may love this. Channeling Orwell and H. G. Wells ,this riveting tale enthralled and impressed me.
Despite its debt to its literary ancestors, Captive State is a very modern story.
The cast is top notch, especially John Goodman. Vera Farmiga, Ben Daniels, and several well known character actors appear in smaller roles than they usually appear in. Perhaps because they liked the script...
The script is moving, harrowing...This is not for softies. A great story told by an excellent cast. One of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen. I'm sad to see the negative reviews for such a brilliant movie.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Brilliant!
This episode should win all the Emmys. I've seen this kind of thing (musical) tried before - with limited success. The only element that did not quite work in the latest episode is the romance between Kirk and La'an. IMO: The producers seemed to be trying to sideline it a little. The whole pregnant girl friend yarn was cringeworthy. The writers/producers really have something special between Kirk and La'an (who is kind of a tragic figure). Real romantic chemistry. It doesn't happen very often on TV. Sam and Diane. David and Maddie.... Hopefully the producers won't mess it up.
The music and dancing were delightful. Really fun episode. This new Star Trek series has captured the spirit and courage of the original. Bravo!
The Nanny Diaries (2007)
Very funny!
Extremely underrated film. If you like movies like the Devil Wears Prada, you will love the Nanny Diaries. This movie has wit and heart. All the performances are very good but I especially loved Paul Giammati and Laura Linney. I will probably buy the book after watching this movie.
I am amazed by the critical rating. But...I also noticed many of the top critics are men. Women viewers in particular should throw out all the critical commentary and just watch the movie!
In summary, lovely satiric comedy with all the actors doing a bang up job of roasting Manhattan parenting. I loved it! Bravo!!!!!
A League of Their Own (2022)
Sorry - no
My comments are based on the first 3 episodes. Despite some really fine performances, the writing lacks authenticity. The dialogue, situations, characterizations, and interactions are more 2022 than 1940s. It's just off. And, IMO: It's definitely not funny.
Becoming Elizabeth (2022)
I can see BBC influence
Well done. It's the Young Bess story only better. The haters are probably sorry there is no time travel or super heroes. The romance less important here than the political struggle. Bravo Starz.
Murder in Provence (2022)
Gorgeous and well written
A dandy mystery series. Witty, well written and acted - and set in a gorgeous location. Hope there is a season 2. Shout out to Patricia Hodges. The incorrigible Florence was possibly my favorite character.
The Dropout (2022)
Good
I listened to the podcast and this - so far - is pretty good. It kept me watching. I'm not as crazy about new material in early episodes. It's probably fictionalized.
The Morning Show: Fever (2021)
Meh - Disappointing
Cory: It should have been Alex. 😳 That's it. That's the review. Really. Do better. Cory/Bradley = 0 chemistry. What a let down!
Totally unbelievable.
The Moorside (2017)
Not For Mystery Purists
It's interesting. Different. More a character study than a crime thriller. What price friendship? Very good performances. Realistic family and community situations. Recommended.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Disappointing
The ending seemed to be for a different series. Soggy and sweet. It devolved into "This is Us."
Even the kid in jail had a happy ending. Bizarre.
V-Wars (2019)
Watch if you like vampire sagas
I liked it. Gets better as it goes along. Over all I liked it lot. For a vampir story - very good. Acting ok. Mythos building is one of best features.
The Man in the High Castle (2015)
Mostly Very Good
Seasons 1 & 2 were good. 3 was by the numbers, broadcast tv. Female characters (whole series) were 2 dimensional and I suspect written by male writers. Most interesting characters were men. Season 4 was better. I loved the final episode. Everything does not need to be explained to me. Thank you.
