Scream VI (2023)
Writers could probably write a good slasher...
The fact of the matter is, this isn't Scream. And no, I don't mean that because Sidney doesn't make an appearance, I mean because it has no stakes in the whole movie.
This movie tries to make a standing because suddenly it is a "franchise," despite the fact that it HAS been one. What both V and VI have been lacking, however, is its own leg to stand on.
Of course, I don't blame them for wanting to pay more of a tribute to Wes Craven in V. That 100% made sense, and some of the things I loved about V were direct references to that (Wes and Judy's death, especially. Those were extremely brutal).
However, Scream VI says it tries to be its own movie, all while basing itself on I-IV. I will say, I was a bit surprised through some things, but otherwise...the fact that there were NO stakes (all new "legacy" (because as Scream VI doesn't like to point out--technically the returning cast IS legacy now) surviving, actual legacy surviving), and the fact that this is literally just Scream 2 with less stakes and that the three killers are just Nany Loomis incarnate, essentially?
I personally won't be watching another Scream unless they bring Neve back. Even though Neve was hardly a character in V, I feel she still at least made it a Scream film after all that lazy Billy's daughter writing (really? Timeline wise he would have cheated on Sid when his whole plot point is him being so mad about his dad sleeping with Colleen? Unless he got her pregnant around the time he was ~15 since Sam's mom got engaged around they graduated and Billy dated Sid for over two years).
I do think these writers could make a good slasher--there were points that actually surprised me. Do I think they should even try to pretend they could be Wes Craven...? No. And I think the Scream franchise should have ended with four, or at the very least, five.
Allen v. Farrow (2021)
Beautifully told tale so far
Those who say "one sided" need to remember this series is based on the memories and experiences of a child who lives it and continues to live with her past.
Her reality is her reality, it can't be reduced to he said/she said. Mr. Allen is free to make his own documentary about his experience.
That said, the collaborating memories of others is damning for Mr. Allen. The family's home movies, commentaries, and input are pieced together in mosaic that tells the tale of innocence stolen. Well worth watching.
