Frank of Ireland (2021)
Very entertaining, very Irish
Very funny Irish comedy . The two Gleason brothers are hilarious. They really flesh out the two characters , add to the mix a brilliant supporting cast , clever pop culture nods and even some slapstick and you've got a winner . Writing and production are a standout .
Swamp Thing (2019)
Needs to be saved and brought back to life
Hands down one of the best DC shows they've done . Such a shame it was cancelled . It's so much better than other DC tv properties.
You (2018)
One of the dumbest shows I've ever seen
Save yourself 42 mins each episode going "C'mon that's ridiculous " . Poorly acted , written and just totally unbelievable. Avoid avoid avoid .
The Village (2004)
Slow, a little dull to begin looks and sounds fantastic but fails to deliver the shock ending.
The movie starts off with an interesting premise, an isolated town away from civilization kept in line by fear of the monsters that roam the nearby woods. Unfortunately that's really about as interesting as M. Night Shyamalans latest offering gets.
Beautifully set in the woodlands of middle America, this little township certainly looks the part with excellent set design, cinematography and visual shots. This coupled with excellent sound effects certainly builds it up to being a Shyamalan movie. So far so good it looks and very importantly for this genre sounds the part too with excellent creepy noises from the darkness.
Character development is where this movies starts to slide, William Hurt the towns elder is simply a cardboard cut out bellowing out warnings and historical fact, Sigorney Weaver simply isn't in any way remotely interesting or important to this movie as her script and her role seem pointless. I genuinely thought Joachim Phoenix would be the saving grace or at least give us a little comedic relief like his character in Signs, but he barely even has lines and stumbles across the ones he does have. Bryce Dallas Howard is very good in what she has to do and is a star to look out for in the future, but sadly will not be remembered for this role.
Then, as per all Shyamalan movies, is the twist in the tale, well maybe this movie simply was thought out as well, but i figured it out from about half way through which simply ruined the movie for me. It wasn't nearly as surprising or interesting and any of his previous movies even the poor Unbreakable was better and more believable than this. The most thought provoking thing about Shylamans movies is the twist and in this simply fizzles out and leaves you feeling nothing for this movie no love, no thought, and a lack of caring for it. Maybe he has exhausted this type of movie now, this was one twist movie too many i feel. He should try his hand at telling a good story instead of trying to make us think about the movie when we leave, because most people wont think about this movie at all.
The Boondock Saints (1999)
Brutal,pointless but excellent action/vigilante romp
Well lets get down to brass tacks, this aint winning any Oscars, but everyone i know that has seen this has absolutely loved it .
Basically this is a cheap film, it looks like it was made with the same budget as straight to TV drama, but that's where the similarities end. Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery play two Irish brothers who turn vigilantes to rid Boston of street scum and gangsters, yes they have the worst Irish accents since Darby O 'Gill but they work well together and add a believable stupidity and at times a very funny side to this dark film. The pearl of this movie is Willem Defoe, he absolutely steals the show and gives it that something extra His performance is simply brilliant, his character is a sharp witted F.B.I will have you memorised by his sheer magnetism. There are times when his delivery of lines will have you splitting with laughter, especially when he's giving his fellow agents some samples of his sarcasm.
This humour backed up with a very strange supporting cast that includes Comedian Billy Connolly, Ron Jeremy and the excellent Davis Della Rocco which adds up to one of the most entertaining films I've seen in ages. I know they will make a sequel and make a complete mess of it but judging by the cult following the film is getting, people can't wait for it.
Blade (1998)
An excellent Comic Vampire Killer romp with Wesley Snipes
From its thumping soundtrack, to atmospheric set design, Blade doesn't disappoint, even for non comic fans. This action packed Vampire Killer movie starts with a bang and is a feast for fans new comers alike. Snipes is excellent as the stone cold Blade, a half man half vampire with a mission, actually its more of a crusade to rid the world of all blood sucking Vampires. Blade isn't alone, Kris Kristofferson backs him up as whistler his weapon maker and mentor. Based in a world where the underworld is secretly run by vampires Blade uses all his super-human skills and weaponry to fight the war nobody knows about. The war against Vampires. With superb martial arts fight sequences and sword fights Wesley Snipes kicks and slashes his way to a climactic ending. You won't be comparing this one to Buffy.
