Nightmare Alley (2021)
Genuinely terrifying
An utterly terrifying, beautiful, yet at times confusing movie. The visuals are stunning and draws you in while the horror or the geek looms constantly.
Fau wa yin (2015)
Misses the mark
I wish Steven Chao was the director. The film may have been saved. The script is perfect, costume sublime, sets gorgeous, and acting is suitable. But the tone is all wrong. It's oddball direction clashes uncomfortably with the serious script. A better director may have toyed with the craziness as in Aeroplane, but we weren't so lucky.
Rebecca (2020)
Decent
An easy to watch version that sits alongside classics. Very in your face with the subtext, but that's ok
Kings of Beer (2019)
A great documentary for a bad beer
The director makes bad beer appear good. Watching this film on an international flight I wanted to retry Budweiser. Was it really flavourful? Had it subtleties? Could I genuinely enjoy it. Landing in Wuhan (#4 ranked brewery in the movie) I Knew I was in the right spot to find out. I was wrong. Bland, boring, no flavour, crap beer. After that I only drank the local Chinese beer: Tsing Tao. The part communist owned brewery beets the 'free world' beer every time! Anyway, if you overlook the terrible product being made to look good this is a great documentary!
