Deadgirl (2008)
9/10
Deeply disturbing but beautifully done.
4 February 2013
Not only was the artwork for this movie i.e. the movie posters; stunning but so was the movie. The movie is based around two teenage boys who bunk off school and break into an abandoned mental hospital. In there, they find a girl wrapped in plastic strapped to a bed. Is she dead? is she alive? is she human? you'll have to find out for yourselves! All you need to know is that she's a major catalyst in the movie.

The thing I liked most about this movie was that it was very metaphorical; from the evil dog guarding and living in the mental hospital - a metaphor for 'an entrance to hell', almost like Satan himself saying hello, to the hospital itself - sexual confusion and the hell of growing up. I read an interview with the director and I discovered a number of things; the film is actually about growing up. Being not only being desperate for sex, but being confused about sexuality. A lot of people think its about men being horrible and bad; it's not entirely about that but there are layers of misogyny within the film. The film touches on typical teen fears; intimacy, abandonment and uncertainty. One of the main characters, Rickie, is totally besotted by a female in the film, and gets repeatedly knocked back. Which you will find out later is completely relevant and quite central to the movie and it's themes.

Although it seems the hospital is the boys idea of heaven, it's actually HELL for them. They almost don't know what they are doing there, and all it brings them is pain and eventually, causes them to do reckless things they would never have done... but you'll find out that one later. This movie is not for everyone, it's quite dark, gory and a bit shocking. A lot of you guys won't understand it or won't like it so bare that in mind! My friend told me about it a year ago so I bought it and watched it the other day :) it cost me a few quid.

Give this title a watch!

This is, and always will be my favourite movie. I'm obsessed with it. It actually holds a dear place in my heart as I'm very attached to it. It's a bit of a strange situation. There has been many a time where I've dreamt of taking Juliette Lewis' place and being a badass with Richie and Seth. I've also wondered whether or not Quentin Tarantino would like a letter from me declaring my love for him, I don't know. Like I said, I'm in love with everything to do with this film. There are many reasons why.

1. It's a 'horror' movie and horror is the best genre. 2. It's got George Clooney in it and in this film, my god. 3. Quentin is a fantastic director and kind of cute idk. 4. It's got some of the best one liners in it I've ever heard. 5. It's set in Mexico and Mexico is wonderful. 6. It's got guns and drugs. 7. Vampires and boobs. 8. Tattoos and alcohol. 9. Blood and guts. 10. Basically all things that make a movie legendary. 11. It's pretty much non-stop action. 12. It kind of inspired me to want to be a director.

Okay, enoughs enough. The acting may be not the best, or the SFX may be a bit unrealistic e.g. when one of the vampires melt with fear or one of their eyes squirt green goo whilst chanting devil words. The bar that all the action occurs at may be the seediest one you'll ever see, BUT, you just have to accept the awesomeness of it! I can't say much more but what I will say is that if you haven't seen this movie, bloody well see it.

Sinister (I) (2012)
7/10
Truly terrifying but long-winded.
9 October 2012
'Sinister' is about a crime novelist who moves his family into a new home to start his new book. He finds found footage in the attic which reveals a string of related murders. In every murder scene, there's a symbol and an image of a paranormal entity. So obviously, he starts to investigate; with devastating consequences.

The trailer for this movie is one you see and go 'screw that, there's no way I'm watching it!'. And it definitely delivered the scares. It was terrifying. I've never jumped so hard at one of the moments in it. There was also loads of creepy and disturbing imagery, dark cinematography and PLENTY of jumpy bits. The only problem I had with it is that it spent too much time focusing on the footage and not enough action happening to the family. I don't know anyone else with this opinion but I definitely felt that way about it.

A tense yet moving tale of extreme grief.
1 October 2012
When I first saw the trailer for 'House at the end of the street' (2012), I thought yay! another 'Silent house' type film. I loved 'Silent house' so I obviously wanted to see this. To be frank, it was much better. It's about a 17 year old girl who moves house with her mum. The house is right near some woodlands and right next to a house where a girl murdered her parents. Turns out, the brother still lives there as he has no-where else to go. He is constantly tormented by locals as they feel he's a psycho and they want him to sell the house. I as a viewer felt increasingly sympathetic towards him and desperately wanted him and Jennifer Lawrences' relationship to work, but it couldn't. They were so sweet together.

Clearly, I can't say too much about it but the whole idea was really well crafted. The only reason why I'm not giving it a 10/10 is because there were a few moments that were a bit unrealistic. Overall though, it was a very tense and jumpy movie, Jennifer was great, and it had some really creepy imagery in it. I'd recommend it for lovers of 'Silent house'.

Badass gore, but too typical and confusing.
1 October 2012
I really didn't like this; in fact, I found myself huffing and puffing throughout it. First of all, the characters are too typical (the whore, the nerd, the jock, and the shy virgin). It's also so American. I mean, I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but as an English girl, it irritates me because it's so cheesy. The couple that ALWAYS have to get naked and make out whenever they get the opportunity. And to be fair, if my girlfriend was dancing like that and flirting that strongly with other girls, I'd tell her off a little.

Enough about the characters, let's get onto the main aesthetics of the movie. The setting is pretty typical and the acting isn't the best I've seen - Hemsworth was a let down. I feel like they also revealed what was going on too soon and there seemed to be two plots - the second of which was revealed right at the end. The second one to me, wasn't needed and just left me confused. However, I will say, the whole idea was pretty good and unique and featured some bad ass deaths. It was like a cross between Hatchet and thirteen ghosts. Therefore, making it resemble a horror/Sci-fi film. I know this review is short but I don't really know what to say about it! I'd recommend it for fans of Hatchet/thirteen ghosts as I just pointed out, but not Chris Hemsworth.

Lawless (2012)
10/10
A violent, funny and moving tale of Moonshiners.
30 September 2012
Personally, I only really like to watch horror movies but when I saw the trailer for this, I HAD to see this. The main line up was amazing - Tom Hardy is brilliant usually and was in this movie, portraying a funny yet strong character. Shia was equally as good; unexpectedly in all honesty. I've never watched a movie with Jess Chastain/Guy Pearce in so I didn't have a prior opinion of them to build on. I pretty much hated Guy as he was the villain! I really wanted him to die!.

My boyfriend was thrilled to find out that this movie was based on a tale of true moonshiners, seeing as he was addicted to the documentary series 'Moonshiners' when it was on TV. I was also glad to find out it ACTUALLY WAS based on a true story. I've grown tired of films saying they are based on a true story when they are clearly not. It puts me off straight away. There was no putting me off this one - I saw it twice in the cinema!. The acting was great, the characters were great, the soundtrack was great and it definitely deserves a 10/10 :) I was shocked when I saw it only got 7ish/10.

The one thing I will say about this movie is that it's not good for people that dislike violence in movies. The movie features some pretty hardcore scenes in which Tom Hardy's throat gets slit, and Shia gets beat up badly. Luckily, that stuff doesn't really bother me. It's also a very long movie; about 2 1/2 hours long. Every second is filled with action, humour, love, and violence - I didn't mind the length.

I'd recommend this movie for lovers of Gangsters, Moonshiners, violence, Tom Hardy, and even Western culture. Worth a watch! x

Straw Dogs (2011)
6/10
Could've had a better plot basis.
25 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was good. But that's all it was. I liked the whole 'crazy locals - hillbilly - cult' idea but it was quite recycled. There seemed to be two main plots when the movie only needed one. The overall message of the movie was a competition for superior masculinity and standing up to the bullies. The movie also had some good death scenes and kick-ass moments but there's nothing more to say about it. I think this movie is suitable for people slightly older than me (I'm 19) and people who favour serious movies. The acting was adequate and for the first movie I've seen Kate Bosworth in, I'm not impressed. The only bit I really liked was Aleksander Skarsgard's body.

Project X (2012)
9/10
Great soundtrack, non-stop fun and chaos!
3 July 2012
This movie tells the story of 3 teen boys, all with completely different personalities, who decide to throw a fairly large birthday bash, which in the end goes totally out of hand. The movie is based on the real life story about a boy named Corey Delaney who threw a huge party that involved the whole street. The movie has worried several people due to the fact that teenagers are represented in a very negative way. Reports of imitations of the Project X party have also been in the news.

I think everyone is overreacting personally but that's just me. This movie is so much fun, and as much as it makes me want to go to a party, I would never act so ridiculously as portrayed in Project X. The movie can be compared to American Pie, Super bad etc with it's really American humour and classic story line. It features filthy comedy, naked teens, scenes of drug use and alcohol consumption and is a non-stop thrill ride. It will leave you gritting your teeth and covering your eyes due to it's absurd stunts and the cringe-worthy events in it.

It has a great soundtrack that makes you wanna get up and dance too! However, the reason why I haven't rated it a ten is because towards the end, it becomes a bit TOO dramatic and silly. But overall, it's fun, sexy, funny, pulse racing & definitely memorable. Just like in Super bad, you emphasize with each character and each one is completely different to the other. If you like Super bad/American Pie, you'll love this :)

The Strangers (2008)
8/10
A nail-biting horror with plenty of scares that really hits home what can happen in everyday life.
2 July 2012
This movie is great. It really sets the tone from the beginning with the seemingly broken down relationship between James Hoyt (Scott Speedman)and Kristen Mckay(Liv Tyler), the darkness of the scenes, the mellow, eerie music, the innocence of the characters both appearance and characteristic wise, and the flickering candles/house smothered in rose petals. The beginning has a very sad feel to it which could be said to add to a sense of a 'hybrid movie' - in this case it's a horror-romance movie. You immediately sympathise with the couple, especially if you've been in love which I have, and you have ever desperately wanted it to work but it won't.

When the first sign of action comes, it comes in the form of hard banging on the door. All the 'villains' in 'The Strangers' don't say much, have a very low tone, little body movements and a variety of masks - a straw bag, a doll mask etc. This really adds to the eerie tone. The horror comes from not non-stop action, but the fact that the people committing the crimes are regular people. The fear also comes from the fact that this wasn't a particularly ridiculous crime that happens once in a blue moon, it was an ordinary break in with violence and no motive.

Acting = 9/10 Jumps and scares = 10/10. Many, unrelenting, shocking.

A truly terrifying, tense movie with plenty of scares.
27 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie last night and I thought it was terrifying - what with the creepy shadows and people, random animal attacks, dusty and dull mise en scene and jumpy sequences. The story itself is totally believable; a unknowing tour guide leads a bunch of tourists in a foreign country and he ends up prey for vicious animals. Many people are saying 'well, why were there people still there if it's an abandoned area?'.. if you wait until the end of the movie, it should all become clear. The whole feel of the movie is really creepy; it's dark, dull, dusty and abandoned. Let's just say the setting is the most effective component in the movie. The acting however, I would give a D grade for - it just wasn't that good. Apart from that, I don't have any more negatives to say about it. This movie can be compared to 'The blair witch project', 'The descent' and 'The hills have eyes', so if you like any of those movies, I suggest you watch this one. The whole realistic nature of the movie really drew me in too, seeing as the Chernobyl disaster actually happened. So did the events portrayed in 'Silent Hill' - it's a real place. Then there's the ending, to me it was unexpected, but I won't go into too much detail. Just watch it!

Kill List (2011)
9/10
A brutal and open for interpretation movie with a realistic message.
11 June 2012
A lot of people have said that this film makes no sense - IT DOES. It requires a lot of thinking but it really does. The film seems to be intended to portray a message rather than tell a story. It is a genuinely scary, hard hitting film which is extremely up for interpretation. There really isn't much to be said about this film or I'd be telling you guys the whole story and explaining my interpretation of each part. I suggest you just watch it and if you don't understand it, go on the internet after to read some explanations - I did myself and now I fully understand the movie. Beware though, the movie is pretty dark and gory, and it will make you go 'what?', but I highly suggest you watch it, it's very clever.

The Pact (II) (2012)
8/10
A touching, creepy yet realistic ghost story.
11 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this film was great. It had a very relevant, realistic story which I didn't find boring at all, like a lot of people did. The thing I most liked about it was the cinematography - it was very bland and added to the overall effect. It was also very jumpy and creepy, and physically left me shivering. The characters weren't particularly interesting, the most obviously striking one was Stevie - the blind girl. Her appearance was very Gothic and sunken and due to her being blind, she had a glazed over expression. The film invoked lots of different emotions in me; fear, sadness, and happiness. The whole story was pretty sad and there was a lot of scary imagery in it, which gave it a certain feel right from the very beginning.

Overall, I was very impressed with the film, although it would've been good to see something more at the end, such as some sort of communication between the final characters. It made me realise that most ghosts aren't to be afraid of, they are just trying to talk to you. The film also touched me in a big way as I've seen a ghost myself before and for some reason the film had a big impact on me.

Twisted, Dark, and full of blood. A maniac in pink.
5 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched the trailer for this, I knew it was going to be great. Every characters performance contributes the overall feel of the movie but the ones we must pay closest attention to are Robin McLeavy's and John Brumpton's. Robin's performance is creepy, insane and very well executed. Her whole persona is totally believable as a serial killer. Her relationship with her father, John Brumpton, is dark and maybe even pushes the barriers of what's watchable, which is both a good and bad thing. I, as a viewer, were glad to not have seen her kiss her father, even though the suggestion was there, that was enough for me. The twist in the movie, where we discover what is underneath the floorboards, was very unexpected in my opinion also. There is just the right amount of sqeamish gore. Just when you think it's over, it goes back in for more; it really likes to push what's acceptable.

The film has some deeper and more serious meanings. The one that I identified was the loss of identity or lack of identity. It is clear to see that 'Princess' (Robin McLeavey) is completely mollycoddled by her father. She gets everything she wants, when she wants it from 'Daddy'. Her room is filled with soft toys and mens' torsos, cut out from magazines. Her mind is clearly still childlike and lastly, she is a complete loner in every aspect of her life, apart from when she's at home with her father. She has been torn apart by jealousy, even for her own mother, whom she calls 'Bright eyes'. She wants people to love her, and only her. Princess just wants daddy to love and accept her, and she wants to find her one true love. I wonder what her wedding will be like... Probably the same twisted scenario!

Jessica McNamee, aka Mia, mostly remains silent, doesn't smile or interact with her parents and only comes alive with vodka and marijuana. She dresses in black and does not care to look feminine. Xavier Samuel aka Brent, has his headphones in all the time, is emotionally broken since his father died and doesn't get on with his mother. I would strongly recommend watching this if you want a demented, squeamish film that is guaranteed to leave an impact on you. L x

The Awakening (I) (2011)
7/10
A very saddening but jumpy movie
28 March 2012
When I first started watching this movie I thought it was going to be as scary as 'The woman in Black', but it made me jump more than physically frighten me. The characters and relationships between the characters was extremely effective, specifically the one between Florence and Tom, the child. It is a very sad movie with twists and turns along the way; a grown-up ghost story. I wouldn't recommend that you watch it on your own! To me there could've been more scares, but apart from that, I have no other criticisms whatsoever. A very watchable, jumpy and emotional thrill ride with a grown-up vintage feel to it.
