Troll (2022)
Bad, full of uninspired copies of Hollywood cliches
They made a copy of a bunch of Hollywood cliches. And they didn't even nail that. That's frustrating. It is like somehow the art of decent script and directing is being lost year by year. Unacceptable for a movie with that kind of budget. You can't just get away with decent or ok-ish CGI, when are producers going to establish that?
Characters are not developed enough, touchy moments are not justified and developed at all, leaving feelings of cringe to the viewer. Such a disappointment.
Also I can't even remotely relate to people that are rating this movie 10/10. This is just irresponsible. So what do they mean? That they haven't watched a better film than this? Ever? Are you serious? Do we have to talk about how rating and grades work? Really?
El ciudadano ilustre (2016)
This movie is a mess
Let's begin with the obvious. The production and post-production lacks professionalism in the most important technical aspects! Like photography, editing, sound design... there must have been made some serious mistakes in aperture or shutter speed, or something similar, and it produces a funny motion blur which is distracting. Also in the scene where camera flash is present there is tearing and horizontal lines in the picture! Now, as far as the editing is concerned, the editor did not nail even a simple dreaming scene of the protagonist, where we wondered if the dream was part of the real events. Just a simple mess... And who chose the sound for the tire blowing? That was the sound of a kid's balloon popping...
So, after mentioning the obvious, let me state that the concept could have some potential, but the mediocre story-telling and some 2-dimensional characters would not allow to develop properly...
I am astonished at how many awards it got and how much the people love it! I would not write this review if it weren't for those awards!
18-Year-Old Virgin (2009)
The audio editing is so bad...
Let me get this straight: I gave this movie a 3 because of the boobies and stuff, otherwise it's so lame it doesn't worth even a review. The only reason I write one is to curse all the people involved in the recording, editing and mixing of the sound (SOUND DEPARTMENT PEOPLE: you could make the film not to suck so badly, but you failed this too.)
OK, clearly the sound guys either are NOT professionals (scratch that, they are not even enthusiast amateurs) or they have serious ear damage. These are the only reasons to justify the horrible, horrible sound.
1) There are so many overdubs (voice overs) in the film, that I'm starting to think that the original recording must have been very crappy. But suppose that we are generous enough to forgive the (drunk) recording guy -- mistakes happen, so OK, the production phase did not work out. 2) So let's go post-production: I understand that the overdubs are recorded in a super "dry" environment, like a studio, so you NEED TO DIRT THE OVERDUBS SO THEY CAN RESEMBLE AN ORIGINAL RECORDING. Is this really so difficult? Really, it seems that some dialogs are suddenly interrupted by a third person voice, sometimes it's even creepy. I caught myself several times thinking "What? Where the hell did that voice come from???" 3) The mixing is freakishly bad. Period.
But you can give this film a chance! Yeah, if let's say, you are an amateur cinematographer and want to understand which lethal screw ups you must avoid when you make your film. Am i fair or what?
Lakeview Terrace (2008)
the plot is exaggerating
The movie characters' behavior and personality is unnatural in quite a few moments of the film. The main male characters are having serious issues with each other and they are not supposed to converse or hang out etc. but they keep meeting at some parties, bars, etc. The plot's continuity is a mess and I don't think this film is worth watching anyway. Do it at your own risk. This is a bad film for Samuel Jackson's career too. He did a good job acting the bad guy but the script didn't make it to help the movie escape from being dumb. The other character interpretations are average and above. There are too many movies of this kind, so the creators should be more careful. They should innovate and not reproduce.
The Goodbye Girl (1977)
This movie is about 30 years old and yet so modern!
I know; the whole set of the movie seems like the thousand other pieces of mediocre films that surged in the movie theaters during the beginning of the "mass production era" (a.k.a. 80's) of Hollywood. But here we are talking about a gem among gravel, "The Goodbye Girl".
The script is surprisingly clever and amusing, and the jokes overwhelmingly saucy, like those we have had experienced after the late 90's or so (even if the movie isn't much of a comedy). The temperament of the character of "Elliot Garfield" gives the writer the unique opportunity to unleash his revelations of social intercourse, giving each of us invaluable lessons about the human relationships; all these through the mouth of the middle-aged actor (astounding acting by Richard Dreyfuss).
I definitely suggest this picture for a cosy night and a sweet taste left in your mind.
