House of Cards (2013)
Season 6 a disaster
If you have not watched it, it is not worth it.
The story line does not progress. Final season? I wonder. For me, final season for sure. What a shame to see such a goid series end like this.
Babylon Berlin (2017)
Outstanding!
The best thing I have seen on TV this year.
So many stories intertwined in an amazing visual spectacle.I hope they continue this series, although it will be a hard act to follow...
Shoah (1985)
Powerful and not for the obvious reasons...
Powerful film. I have seen many films and read many books, so very little of the information came as a surprise...EXCEPT, and looking around the comments, another poster "Lufty" described what impacted me most about Shoa. Here are his words, I could not have expressed them better than he does:
"The complicity of most of the populations of Central and Eastern Europe in this horrid stain on human history was most famously exposed in Goldhagen's "Hitler's Willing Executioners" (released 12 years after "Shoah")which investigates the endemic antisemitism throughout this part of Europe and how Hitler's rantings were descended upon a more than willing audience.
And THAT is Lanzmann's brilliance. Through their own words, he demonstrates clearly that not only were those in the areas of these camps fully aware of what was happening, but fully complicit in it. And more frightening is that even knowing what happened, and the unimaginable results, their attitudes, in many cases have not changed."
That is what I found most disturbing, specially considering this film was made 30 years after the events, when EVERYONE knew exactly what had happened.
The Tudors (2007)
When it is historic why not be accurate to history?
The series so far has been interesting, but it never ceases to amaze me that these historical pieces often abandon with no apparent reason the historical facts. Case in point is the role played by Gabrielle Anwar, called Princess Margaret int eh series. There of course was a Princess Margaret, but she married James IV of Scotland, was the mother of James V. Her marriage to the King of Scotland eventually led to the "Union of the Crowns" of Scotland and England. Henry VIII had another sister, Mary. This one resembles the character a bit more, but Princess Mary, married Louis XII of France and was therefore Queen Consort of France. After the death of Louis XII she remarried Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, as in the series. I'm not saying that everything else about the series is accurate, but why change this character when the real history is as interesting or more than the storyline used? Mary's short marriage to Louis of course preceded the reign of Francis I in France. Maybe they wanted to make the rivalry between Henry and Francis such a big part of the story that they decided it was worth changing the historical facts.
Rome: Philippi (2007)
I still liked it... but I keep wondering...
I agree that the inaccurate portrayal of the Battle of Philippi was very unfortunate. Particularly taking into account that the real events would have been a lot more dramatic than those portrayed.
As for Pullo in the scene where he kills Cicero, I do not think it was out of character at all, It reminded me of the Godfather line of "It is business, it is not personal". He had a job to do, and did it without emotion. Cicero knew it was not personal, he knew it was his time to die...
What has nothing to do with this episode, but still makes me wonder about the series, is how with the current storyline Octavia is going to end up with Mark Anthony! Messing with that historical fact would be a lot worse than messing with the historical facts about the Battle of Philippi! Stay tuned! E
Flyboys (2006)
The "Blue Max" this is not... but not as bad as I had expected...
After reading several comments in here (imdb) I went to see the movie anyway. Yes the all red DRIs were a distraction, but there was enough about the movie that makes it worthwhile. I liked the soundtrack and also liked the visual spectacle. I did not find the aerial combat shots cartoon-like at all. Yes there are plenty of clichés, yes there are several impossible to believe situations, yes it was predictable, but overall it was an OK movie. Saw it compared to Pearl Harbor here and this one gets better marks than Pearl Harbor from me. If you like military history style movies, I think you will enjoy it, specially if you can imagine all those DRI are something else! The Blue Max this is not, but it is not a terrible movie either. E
Friday Night Lights (2004)
I liked it, but was looking for more...
Just came back from watching the movie and I think it will do well and in general it is a good movie... BUT after waiting for the movie for so long, after reading the book, I was left hoping for more. What did I miss? I missed several of the characters which were brushed over or left out. But mainly I missed the pageantry and in particular the band's music. You could hear "Hawaii Five-O" in the background once, but some of the psyche up songs(like Back in Black!), the PHS band, the cheerleaders, the pre-game school pep rally all should have been part of the movie. Where was the 'MOJO/RE-BEL' duels, where were the 'NO MO MOJO' chants... there were enough "slow moments" that I think a bit more of the passion of the school and all the football related activities should have had a part in the movie. Those who lamented that the PHS band had not been used in the movie, will not feel bad as the band plays basically NO part in the film.
I would say there was a bit too much 'Boobie' Miles at the expense of other characters. On the other hand the coach's character was expanded even beyond what I remember from the book, and the acting from Thornton was excellent. The game action sequences were excellent. And even though the music left me wanting for more, the music as the teams took the field in the Astrodome was EXCELLENT! I thought they treated the famous bounce pass scene very well. The social edge from the book ALMOST came out here, and in the pre-game meeting between the Carter and Permian coaches. The final sequences of the players falling short, but realizing they had given their all, were for me the highlight of the movie. I would have added a bit more importance to the end, when they talk about Permian winning State in '89. After all they were ESPN HS National Champions in '89, and you could have given an additional 'feel good' finish. At the theater where I saw the movie the lights were on and everyone was walking out when this finally came on the screen! Overall I recommend this movie highly, but I also recommend you get the book and read it. The book will have a harder edge, but it will also give life to many of the characters that the movie only skims over...
