Undateable (2014–2016)

Grows on you like a fungus
22 June 2014
I hated this show. Sucked big time but I kept watching for a couple chuckles. I can't say how bad it is, but there is that little something that eats at you to keep watching. It's simply awful. And truly it is awful but there is an annoying itch that it seems to scratch. The jokes are trite and the acting is awful.

Why I keep watching I don't know. I hate it and if they quit making them I won't miss it but darn it I keep on watching. There is only one explanation why? I just haven't figured it out yet.

Like a food you don't particularly like but can't stop eating. The city sucks, the characters suck, the actors suck, but they all suck so well.

The Virginian (2014 Video)

Simple and realistic like
19 May 2014
If you rent this expecting to see the old Virginian forget it. This a realistic like simple movie of what it may have been like in some areas. The act was very good. As for Adkins I have heard of him, never heard him sing (no singing here) but he was convincing. All acting was quite good. Ron Pearlman gave his typically excellent performance.

The woman playing the teacher was adequate although her part was limited and the man that played the writer was excellent.

Eight may be a bit high but I don't usually like westerns. It's a simple movie with a simple style. I still don't like country/western music.

Mom's Day Away (2014 TV Movie)

Acting wasn't bad but
11 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The story was typical of what you expect to see on the Hallmark Channel. The issues I had were the condescension and the total disrespect of other characters. The mother while watching a karaoke act made vicious rude comments about a singer and then gets up and does almost as poorly.

They flash back to the 1990's and use phobic terminology of those days with things like "you're so gay." Following a derogatory statement about the main character.

The woman goes out and gets a make-over which makes her look like a street walker and then puts other people down. This could have been good but the writing was awful and the self esteem issues were a put down to any mother. Very disappointed in Hallmark on this one.

The act not bad. The plot was decent. The dialogue was belittling.

New Roswell Meets Alien Nation
19 February 2014
Throw in a touch of district 9, and young lust and you have it.

Ship crash lands, earthlings over react, and 10 years later the caged aliens are forced integration into a school system filled with xenophobes.

For a first episode it was entertaining and informative a hard combination to achieve. The beautiful and handsome actors are well cast. What's adventure without romance?

It left the first episode with lots of tension.

Nice camera shots. A little of the plot has been done many times but tried and true.

Not very good
1 December 2013
Weak plot and presentation. It emphasizes the primitive belief of the old testament, from the eating of properly prepared meat to rejection of meat, because of their ignorance on proper preparation.

Many think of this as part of Christianity but it is fact the early stories of the Jews.

The acting was similar to a 1950's or 60's high school production. I would not call this Christian preaching just a poor production of a book from the Bible.

There is no personality in the characters. They are two dimensional, flat with few expressions and ability.

One of the oddest and metaphysical books in the Bible filled with brazen images and predictions yet nothing was relayed beyond bland dialog.

Very much like a stage play.

The Carpenter's Miracle (2013 TV Movie)
5/10
Much of what you would expect
1 December 2013
As in the premise description a modern day carpenter touches a young boy who drowned and was declared dead; but the kid was resurrected.

Shortly after the two main characters mother of the resurrected boy and the Carpenter act as if they are in desperate to find love and start courting.

Not a preachy movie and none of the character are very complex. The media pushes too hard and then their life becomes stressed. It starts to fall apart in the middle and interest fades then picks up a bit.

There is a love relationship that just doesn't work in the script.

Not the greatest but much better than most. I'm not religious but will give it a 5 for acting and production.

Home Run (2013)

Religion and addiction
4 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The movie has very little to do with baseball. It is about major league ball player addicted to alcohol, and hits rock bottom. His father was also a drunk and abusive. He is forced into a 12 step Christian based program at a church in his hometown.

He returns to his home town and helps coach a little league team. He co-coaches with his ex girlfriend and mother of his illegitimate son, who is also on the team. The boy doesn't know the man is his father. There is a lot of religious reflection and depiction of people who are addicted to sex, drugs, and-or have been abused in someway. The plot is nothing new and a bit weak, even for a Christian movie.

The acting is top notch. Particularly Scott Elrod as Cory. The man playing the head of the Christian 12 step program, looks realistic and seems like he may have had some serious problems. (Little creepy) Most of the other addicts were just as odd and good at acting. They didn't look like actors.

The photography is good, the scenery is realistic, and depicts a depressed small town with an amazing number of people with various addictive issues.

If this movie were tightened up to an hour it would be much better.

There are a few 'feel' slightly good moments but very few. The main problem is the attempt for atmosphere which is taking over so many movies to stretch them into a full length movie. Lots and lots of music and camera angles always indicates the plot is thin.

As a Christian based movie, this is one of the better ones and holds back on the judgmental issues, well done but slow and dragging.
