Unfriended (2014)

Gripping suspense, poor ending
21 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A movie shown completely through the the computer screen of one character. Interesting and current with how many people use social media to communicate. This helped to build suspense as the character can switch between programmes/apps, muting what was going on elsewhere and having private text chats with others.

The only frustration was that half the dialogue was as written messages, meaning it was slow moving in places and you have to be close enough to the screen to read the messages.

I liked the message that our actions to others can come back to haunt us and that he internet can be manipulated to expose or embarrass people.

Was disappointed with the final scene - much better to leave it suspenseful or as an online only presence to give a sense of more realism and fear of using the web again!

The Platform (2019)
4/10
A bit vague
21 April 2020
My interpretation is that the cells on the tower represent society and the hierarchy involved. The highest levels gain access to the most food and can take what they want, despite knowing their greed will affect those at lower levels.

I found it difficult to watch as it was dubbed, so the words didn't match their mouth movements. They added in exaggerated eating noises, so if you do not like hearing people eat, this will put you off. The dialogue was often protracted and oddly sequenced - possibly a translation thing.

The purpose of the platforms was never fully explained. For some, they committed crimes, others chose to be there in exchange for something. The end was disappointing and left open to interpretation. If you like to psycho-analyse characters, you will probably like this film. For me, I enjoyed the idea of the film, but would not bother watching this again.

The Purge (I) (2013)
5/10
Wasted Opportunity
21 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, I enjoyed the film, however it could have been so much better; hence the average score.

I love the idea of the film, however it was slow to start and followed only one purge. There was the opportunity to follow multiple purge's at the same time to keep us on the edge of our seats.

There were a few frustrations throughout for me:

  • The children needed to be told what the purge is...although they are teens and clearly lived through this before.
  • The daughter's boyfriend attempts to murder the father, but ends up getting killed...no one seemed overly shocked by this.
  • The blood looks like some pre-schoolers were tasked with designing fake blood. I don't understand this - has the director never cut themselves or seen blood? Very unrealistic.
  • Once the purgers gain access to the house, they are able to find the son hiding in the basement of a huge house within seconds, when the whole family were unable to find the man they tried to protect in their own home for most of the movie!
  • One of the characters was shot whilst they were standing directly over one of the children, unyet the child managed to get up with no blood on them at all!
  • Why weren't the purgers better protected? They could clearly afford body armour and guns, but most chose a knife and a toga!

As I said earlier, despite these annoyances I enjoyed the film and would watch it again, however these lowered my enjoyment and I think there is scope to make a much better movie without changing too much.

Night Hunter (2018)

Opportunity missed
16 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
A film with a promising storyline, let down by poor acting, lack of any real back story for the characters and very cheap production.

It's like they ran out money - only about a dozen actors in the whole film, edited poorly leaving big gaps in explanation, for example:

  • What is the relationship with the lead and his ex?
  • how does the lead know the female police officer/psychiatrist (her role was never really explained)
  • How did the girl acting as bait come to live with the vigilante?
  • how does a former judge turn into a psychotic butcher that castrates his victims?
  • Not completely obscure, but why are the two male leads both British in a back water American town?
  • how did the police force come to be so incompetent that most of them get killed or tricked easily by one man and his brother.
  • why did no professional check the pulse of the baby when they assumed it was dead?
  • why was the female officer allowed into an interview room alone, to uncuff the suspect and tease him by opening her shirt? Ethical and professional violations galore!
  • what is the relationship between the lead and female officer at the end?
  • why wasn't the vigilante arrested for castrating however many victims and using presumably illegal tracking devices?

Really felt like the actors couldn't be bothered, and were just biding time to pick up a pay cheque.

Not a wholly awful film if you need to waste an hour and a half and aren't expecting high budget drama.

Predictable outcome, but aren't they all?!

Making a Murderer (2015–2018)

Most compelling documentary - you will shout at the tv!!
14 April 2020
I have watched this twice now and each time i have got so mad. I appreciate it may be portrayed from a particular point of view, however when the evidence is given and gets rejected time after time, you cannot help but scream at the TV!

It is slow in parts, but persevere...you wont't be disappointed. It is compelling viewing and if anything the second season is better.

If you think Tiger King is good ...this blows that out the water!!! Honestly just frustratingly good viewing!

The Irishman (2019)

Really really good
14 April 2020
Amazing acting, great story lines and some twists. Loved how the story was told through the eyes of De Niro's character as he was at the end of his life.

For anyone that likes gangster movies, it is worth a watch - high quality actors from across the great gangster films. The only negative is that it lasts 3.5 hours. This would put me off watching it again soon, but definitely worth seeing for the first time.

Kept me glued throughout - defo give it a watch. You won't be disappointed.

All been done before

Warning: Spoilers
Take 4 teenage girls, start a story about a school bully that goes nowhere and apparently for no reason until the end when the bully just looks at the victim...??? Then add in the predictability of these 4 inexperienced divers, going caving. Of course the cave collapses trapping them and needing to find a way out. Except the way out is blocked by a giant great white shark that has been able to survive in these unchartered caves with little to no food, but still become massive. Then the twist is, it's blind!!!!! But of course it has evolved to have heightened senses and so picks off the cast one by one. Even better, is that the girls can talk to each other through their scuba masks...even though their ears are outside of the mask and clearly are not wearing any headphones / earplugs etc....so how can they hear?! Maybe they can interpret what the others are saying simply through the script simply having the directions 'Scream' and say 'SWIM!!!!!' over and over again. Inoffensive, but unimaginitive. Would rather spend the hour and a half it takes to watch this searching for a better film!

Furious 7 (2015)

Cheap and cliched
5 April 2020
Take all the cliche lines you've heard from other movies and join them together to make a script. Add in some wooden acting, unrealistic plot lines and some pretty terrible CGI and you get the Fast & Furious 7.

Take it at face value - a noisy action film with fast cars, elaborate fight scenes (often so clear the actors are no where near making contact with each other), unnecessary bikini shots, and it's a film that is capable of wasting a couple of hours of your life. Treat it like it's a spoof on action movies and you might enjoy it.

If it were a choice between watching this movie again or being locked in a room with violent cats...I'd take my chances in that room!
