Sully (2016)
Disappointing
The whole story is written with zero subtlety. Investigators are portrayed as angry idiots who want to blame the pilots, and pilots are portrayed as heroes who need to prove them wrong. The depiction of the investigation is ridiculous, as if the whole thing happened live in 15 minutes with hundreds people in the same room. Actors were good and imagery of the plane in flight as well but the whole thing is ruined by an incredibly weak script. What else is there to say, I wish they had made a better depiction of actual NTSB work and investigation, there was a great opportunity and material to do something interesting.
The Foreigner (2017)
More than the Jackie Chan revenge movie you think it is
The trailer is misleading, it's much more than a Jackie Chan revenge movie. There's a lot of Irish/British political IRA storyline going on. The character portrayed by Pierce Brosnan is also really good and interesting. Feels like a Tom Clancy kind of movie. Good stuff!
The Voices (2014)
Excellent dark comedy
This movie is everything I like about a movie: it's smart, funny, dark, deep, emotional, everything mixed up perfectly. It's also very nice visually. Ryan Reynolds is great, I can't think of anyone who would have done a better job. You must watch this, it's really good.
The Post (2017)
Quite a mess, artificially emotional and not very smart
There are so many characters in this movie, there're all over the place. As a result there is little engagement to anyone in particular. The movie tries to be funny at times but is not really. There are *many* annoying 'in your face' emotional cues, in particular about feminism, which will make you say 'seriously?' out loud while watching. In particular pretty awful 'emotional' music that will let you know what emotion you should feel at what particular times. It feels like they made this movie for stupid people. It's pretty bad.
There are better movies to watch in the same style: All the President's Men, Spotlight or State of Play. They're all much better than this.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Beautiful, slow and boring
Beautiful but excruciatingly slow and boring. I can't help but wonder what a faster-paced, same story, one hour less version of this movie would have looked like. Could have been a pretty good movie.
The Man from Earth: Holocene (2017)
Disappointing rehash of the first movie
The first movie was quite something, it had great dialogues and made me think a lot about what we are and what it means to be human. I was hoping for this new movie to build upon the first one and explore new angles about the human condition. Unfortunately this new movie turns out to be a rehash of the first one with lesser dialogues and storyline. This one focuses almost entirely on the religious angle but without presenting anything new. Some other scenes slightly touch the subjects of love and rejection (which are already covered much more nicely in the first movie) but doesn't explore nor discuss it further, which makes several scenes feel silly and pointless. Just watch the first one again.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
Below average and not very smart
Noomi Rapace plays seven sisters that are supposedly identical DNA-wise, yet they have completely different personalities and they're all total clichés: the sporty, the glamorous and careless, the smart and weak, the lesbian (!), the cold-blooded, etc... The fight scenes are really meh and ridiculous at times. The script is boring as can be and tries to be smart but ends in confusion. Willem Dafoe is good but plays a really minor part. You can pass this one.
Dunkirk (2017)
Single page script and few dialogues
What a weird movie. The script should be able to fit on a single page and there are very few dialogues (and certainly none that you would remember). Direction is okay for an otherwise quite boring movie. The only thing that saves this movie is that it's not too long, which makes it not too painful to watch.
Berlin Syndrome (2017)
Slow, boring and not particularly enjoyable
Nothing much happens in this movie, except at the very beginning and very end. It's excruciatingly slow and boring. We don't get any insight into the characters, the dialogues are rare and do not serve any interesting purpose. In the end, it's just not enjoyable to watch. I can't think of any reason why someone would want to watch this thing.
Passengers (2016)
Great movie, disappointing ending
I really enjoyed the movie but the ending was really disappointing. The "revive" scene is one we have seen a hundred times before in so many other movies. I think it would have made a great ending for him to die there and Aurora ending up waking up someone else as she faces the same situation as Jim's at the beginning of the movie.
